The production commenced in 1962 only to stall after the untimely death of screen superstar
Dai Lin in 1964. After a publicity campaign to search and cast a replacement, the studio recruited
Elsie Tu Tieh to body double and finish Lin Dai's unfinished scenes for this and simultaneously for 'Lan yu Hei (xia)(1966)' and 'Bai lian deng (1965)'. In the process, theatrical release was delayed another three years as a result of arduous re-shoots and re-editing.
