SpongeBob SquarePants takes leave from the town of Bikini Bottom in order to track down King Neptune's stolen crown.
This is the last traditionally animated film from Paramount Pictures and Nickelodeon Movies, until its successor, The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water (2015), which was released approximately 11 years after the first movie.

King Neptune puts a lock on the door to make sure Mindy does not get back in but when the bucket heads break through there is no lock on the door.
In the end credits, compositing supervisor Dan Levitan is credited as "composting supervisor."
In the Hungarian version, much of the dialogue is rendered in rhymes and includes a lot more puns and wordplays than the original.
