Filmmaker Sriram Raghavan, who is known for films like ‘Andhadhun’, ‘Johnny Gaddaar’, ‘Agent Vinod’, ‘Ek Hasina Thi’ and others, recently attended the Jio Mami Mumbai Film Festival panel for ‘Word to Screen’ discussing the possibilities of the screen adaptations of written material.
It’s often said that films don’t do complete justice to the books on which they’re based on given the time constraint.
However, the medium of long-format storytelling like television series or a streaming series comes with enough bandwidth with regards to time and exploring deeper nuances of a book.
However, Sriram feels that it’s not always that a book translates extremely well on screen. For him, it’s a very “case specific” thing.
The filmmaker said, “Books are an entirely different medium. How good the adaptation of a book to screen is it’s a very case specific thing. There have been many examples...

Matchbox has recently acquired the rights of journalist Jigna Vora's book - Behind Bars in Byculla, a hard-hitting saga based on true accounts of female prisoners Jigna encountered during her prison term.
Speaking about this acquisition, Sanjay Routray of Matchbox Pictures said, ?It is our privilege to have someone like Sriram Raghavan help us identify good content. We feel these incredible true-life stories in Behind Bars in Byculla need to be told on a wider medium. Matchbox will be collaborating with Jaspinder Singh Kang on this project.?
Sriram Raghavan, who also launched Jigna?s book, tells us - ?I was curious about Behind Bars In Byculla because it?s a crime reporter?s point-of-view about life in a prison. Parts of it reminded me of Ek Hasina Thi. The book talks about Jigna's career as a journalist, how she got mired in the case, her time in jail and her eventual acquittal.

Throughout his career, Sriram Raghavan has made neo-noir style his trademark. First, the director successfully exploited it in his debut feature “Ek Hasina Thi”, then in cunning “Johnny Gaddar”, and finally in maybe not flawless, yet intriguing “Badlapur”. With “Anandhun,” he departs from seriousness. Although Raghavan still explores the darkest corners of human souls, this time he plays with structures and genres, skillfully mixing a deceitful thriller with a dark comedy. Time and again, he winks to his audience, playing with the typical pulp threads, and he seems to have a good laugh at it. From the director, he turns into a prestidigitator. Yes, we have already seen this kind of tricks, but the way he crafts his illusions leaves us in a childlike amusement. And he stuffed plenty of rabbits in his hat.
A rabbit, actually, is the starting point. After the hilarious motto is displayed “What is life?...

Drapchi. For the uninitiated, a lyrical-sounding word. But for those who have been inside it, Drapchi is one of the most-dreaded places on the earth. Drapchi is the name of Lhasa’s Prison No. 1, the largest in Tibet. Converted from a Tibetan military garrison into a prison following the 1959 Tibetan uprising (officially it was made into a prison in 1965) and the flight of the Dalai Lama to India, it is where most of the political prisoners of Tibet are incarcerated. Tibetan exile groups have often alleged brutal excesses committed by the Chinese jail personnel on the inmates.
But now, the word Drapchi has another meaning too. It is the name of a new movie directed by indie filmmaker Arvind Iyer, and starring famous Tibetan singer Namgyal Lhamo. The 77-minute movie is an interesting experiment in filmmaking. It uses the format of a docu-fiction, with the characters barely speaking to each...

One of the major reasons why Agent Vinod was on the buzz circuit was because of director Sriram Raghavan. Having given us two wonderful thrillers before – Ek Hasina Thi and Johnny Gaddaar – we hoped that Sriram would complete his trilogy with this one. So does he manage to awe us once again with his style of story-telling?
Saif Ali Khan aka Agent Vinod is a secret Indian Raw (research and analysis wing) agent who is on a mission to trace a deadly object, the identity of which even he doesn’t know. It is no surprise that filmmakers do look at old songs for their movie titles – in fact there was a time when every other Bollywood movie title could be traced back to an old classic. And while the makers did stray to English titles in recent times, the age of song name-turned-movie name seems to be back. And the Gen Next appears to be taking the maximum inspiration from evergreen romantic hero, Rishi Kapoor.
Rishi’s own son, Ranbir starred in a 2008 Yash Raj movie, Bachna Ae Haseeno, which was a song from his 1977 hit Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahi. Imraan Khan-Kareena Kapoor starrer Ek Main Aur Ek Tu (which has already created enough hullabaloo for its title – see here ) is again taken from the song of the same name from Khel Khel Main which saw Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Singh together. That’s not all. Prateik Babbar’s...

After a hiatus, Ram Gopal Varma would be back into the business of making films with a vengeance. He would soon be flagging off multiple films in the year 2011 where he won't necessarily be coming behind the camera as a director. "That's true, I can't sit quite for long. I have to start new productions now", confirms Ramu whose last production without him as a director was ill fated Go (2007). On the other hand, his other production Shabri is stuck in the cans for years. There was a time when Ram Gopal Varma was busy giving breaks to number of first time directors. They could have ranged from spot boys to assistant directors to writers but anyone with promise who caught fancy of Ramu had a good enough opportunity to get a film for himself. "However, the results weren't always favourable", comments an industry veteran, "Look at the line up...

With lukewarm response at the Box Office to his much hyped flick like ‘Tashan’, Saif Ali Khan may not be the current hot-favourite Bollywood star.
Nevertheless, the Chote Nawab has got his kitty full with his own production ‘Agent Vinod’ as well as an unnamed project with Renzil D’Silva along with Imtiaz Ali’s ‘Love Aaj Kal’ in near future.

When asked about what he likes the most – film production or acting, Saif said that he is inclined towards the creative aspect as an actor. When solicited about the kinds of films he would like to make, Saif was clear in his take and said that he...

Download image as wallpaper Now that Kareena Kapoor is finally going to be part of Saif Ali Khan's production plans, no stone is being left unturned to ensure her presence is justified in the Khan-produced venture. Apparently, in the beginning, the leading lady's role in Agent Vinod was relatively less substantial than Saif's. Says a source, "In fact Kareena wasn't sure she wanted to do Agent Vinod because the title clearly indicated whom the film belonged to. But Saif convinced Kareena that her role would be on a par with his. Then he convinced Sriram with whom Saif has a deep rapport since they did Ek Hasina Thi together, to make sure Kareena's presence in the film is justified." Quiz Kareena about this, and she laughs, "Do you think I'd agree to be part of the film if my role was not as exciting as Saif's? I mean, can you imagine what would happen?...
