A nurse, a policeman, a young married couple, a salesman, and other survivors of a worldwide plague that is producing aggressive, flesh-eating zombies, take refuge in a mega Midwestern shopping mall.
Some of the video clips in the opening credits were actual stock news footage, such as the scene of a truck driving into a crowd of people.
Michael, you can't do this, what if I'm wrong?
Michael: You've seen it happen before!
After the opening credits, Ana and Kenneth are seen walking down a paved walkway next to a park. Off to the left, there is a red child's bike lying on the walkway. They then pass through a tunneled section of the walkway, and the right side of the walkway behind them is clear. But after Andre shoots at Kenneth, a blue adult bike appears on the right side of the walkway behind them.
During the end credits, intercut with the closeup clips of zombies, there is a very brief clip similar to the infamous Paris Hilton tape, with its telltale green "nightvison" effect.
The theatrical R-rated cut of the film is 100 minutes long. However, as usual for Universal Home Video, an unrated "Director's Cut" has been released on DVD alongside the R-rated theatrical print. This cut has been officially timed at 110 min and contains more character development and gore.
