Mark Harmon is arguably the face most associated with "NCIS." With so much 9-1-1 franchise news circulating around, there’s always buzz and scoop.

As many of you know, 9-1-1: Lone Star met a tragic end as it wrapped its final season up on Fox, never making it over to ABC with the flagship series.

Chad Powell is heading to the small screen this fall.

Per Variety, it's been announced that Hulu has set Powell's new show, Chad Powers, with a release date of Sept. 30, 2025. In the series, Powell plays washed-up football quarterback Russ Holliday in what could be his most transformative role. The comedy is a half-hour show co-created by Powell and Michael Waldron. Alongside Powell, the series also stars Perry Mattfeld, Quentin Plair, Wynn Everett, Frankie A. Rodriguez, and Steve Zahn.

In the series, per the logline: "When bad behavior nukes hotshot Qb Russ Holliday’s college career, he disguises himself and walks onto a struggling Southern football team as the talented, affable Chad Powers.”

A Viral Sketch Inspired the Series

The show is inspired by a viral comedy sketch that was uploaded in 2022 featuring real-life Super Bowl winner Eli Manning, who made the video with he and his brother's Omaha Productions for ESPN+.

9-1-1 viewers were terribly shocked in April when beloved lead character Bobby Nash (played by actor Peter Krause) was suddenly killed off. Some fans were impressed, some were furious -- but everyone could agree that the scene had gotten people talking. Now the president of ABC is revealing that the buzz from Bobby's death helped set the tone for upcoming spinoff 9-1-1: Nashville.

Craig Erwich spoke to Deadline about the dramatic death and why it had to happen. “As a viewer, it was incredibly emotional.[Bobby]’s a beloved character, and there was so much grist for the mill for [actor] Angela Bassett, who I thought gave such an incredible performance in both the episode where he died and the funeral,” Erwich said.

Bobby's death has hung over the 9-1-1 characters for multiple episodes. The event happened in "Lab Rats," when the team became trapped in a lab researching a terrible virus.

As the current broadcast season wraps up, networks are already looking ahead to the fall. What won’t change for the 2025-2026 season: There are dramas, comedies, animated series, and unscripted shows filling the time slots. CBS even has a couple shows set for 2026-2027, including the new Einstein, starring Matthew Gray Gubler. On CBS, there are a couple changes: NCIS is moving back to its original time slot, Tuesdays at 8/7c, to be followed by spinoffs NCIS: Origins and NCIS: Sydney, for an all-ncis night. FBI is moving to Mondays at 9/8c (NCIS‘s old spot), and the new offshoot in the franchise, CIA, will follow it. Blue Bloods‘ offshoot Boston Blue, with Donnie Wahlberg reprising his role as Danny Reagan, is taking the long-running series’ old time slot, Fridays at 10/9c, and joining it and Fire Country that night is the latter’s spinoff, Sheriff Country. The NCIS: Tony & Ziva first-look trailer made me laugh like a little kid. As a surprise, Paramount+ announced the spinoff would be coming in August 2025 instead of later in the fall. During the May 8, 2025 Paramount Global Earnings Call, Paramount touched base on their shows, mentioning that Criminal Minds: Evolution season 3 premiered earlier that day, NCIS: Tony & Ziva had been moved up to an August release, and four of Taylor Sheridan's shows filled the rest of the year's schedule.

Tony Dinozzo is one of my favorite characters. Although I loved Kate Todd and was devastated by her departure, it allowed CBS to cast a hardcore female agent who would test Tony like Kate did for two seasons. Ziva's addition in season 3 was the perfect move for the franchise. But no one knew they'd become an NCIS on-and-off-again love story to last decades.

There is so much television currently on television that some will argue there is too much.

And while broadcast television remains king for most, there are many gems on streaming platforms that are worthy of attention.

The TV upfronts have a long and colorful history, rooted in grainy images of network executives strategically moving shows around an oversized scheduling board, trying to parry moves by other programmers in the equivalent of a high-stakes chess match.

Today, the strategy is less a cerebral cat-and-mouse game of positioning those pieces than a WWE-style free for all, where programmers try to assemble cohesive lineups but can’t begin to plan how to counter competition that’s coming at them on a multitude of fronts.

Billions of dollars in advance commitments still hang in the balance, with networks and now streaming services seeking to impress media buyers and garner their share of the advertising pie. While sellers still dress to impress, from flying in talent to hosting parties, the Trump economy has cast a shroud over this year’s festivities, stoking fears companies will cut back on spending amid looming recession anxiety.

NCISstar Gary Cole promises "revenge" to come in the hit series' twenty-third season.

Speaking to TVLine, Cole was asked about how his character, NCIS Supervisory Special Agent Alden Parker, can be expected to react to the murder of his father Roman when the series returns for Season 23. "He's pissed. He's really pissed," Cole responded. "I’m not sure how that’s going to play out, but I know it’s going to have something to do with revenge — whether accurate [by targeting crime boss Carla Marino] or misplaced…. [But] it can’t not have any consequences to him mentally."

Cole went on to discuss the scene in which Parker discovers his father, portrayed by Francis X. McCarthy, shot to death, seemingly by Parker's arch-nemesis and Kansas City mob boss Carla Marino. Cole described being "intimated" by the scene, explaining that "normally you have a scene where just one thing happens... in the same moment, he comes to a full realization.

Ever since news broke that Lauren Cohan and Jeffrey Dean Morgan were joining forces for a spinoff of The Walking Dead, there were questions about how much Maggie and Negan were willing to put up with each other.

Wild fan theories and speculation about the pair ensued, but The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 2 Episode 2 highlighted their mutual goal of keeping Hershel safe.

Despite what people may think of Negan, he’s shown up in many different ways for Maggie and Hershel, whether on The Walking Dead Season 11 or The Walking Dead: Dead City Season 1, he’s always been trying to right the wrongs of the past.

According to the folks over at Deadline.com, CBS did renew their new drama/mystery show Watson for a brand new season 2. The renewal announcement took place early back in March 2025. It's reported that the premiere episode 1 was CBS' most-watched scripted episode of the 2024-25 season. Shortly after that, CBS hopped on board to greenlight a new season 2. It's reported that CBS also renewed some of their other shows like: Tracker, Fire Country, Elsbeth and NCIS, NCIS: Origins, NCIS: Sydney and more. So, if you like any those shows, that's extra good news. According to the Live Nielsen ratings, Watson season 1 brought in an average of 5.196 million Live viewers per episode along with a 0.38 ratings score for the 18-49 year old demographics.

In the Tracker Season 2 finale, Colter Shaw confronts Otto Waldron (played by Seal Team’s Alex Fernandez), a mysterious lineman who reveals that, yes, he pushed Ashton Shaw off that cliff more than 20 years ago. But that’s only the beginning of this story.

Otto then tells Colter that his mother Mary (recurring guest star Wendy Crewson) asked for his help that night. Help with what, exactly, remains a question mark at the end of the hour. Did she instruct Otto to kill her husband? Or did the situation escalate beyond anyone’s expectations?

CBS' Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach delivered some very positive words about all the shows they renewed stating, "This season, our new and returning series continue to showcase CBS as the leader in launching and programming the biggest hits with mass appeal for broadcast and streaming viewers. NCIS: Origins left Lala's fate up in the air after Season 1's shocking finale; fans hope for the best, but the show could take a very dark turn. Mariel Molino weighed in on what's next for her character, asserting that no one, even mainstays, is safe in the NCIS franchise.

NCIS: Origins wrapped up an eventful Season 1 with a bang, paving the way for multiple storylines. Lala's arc is uncertain after the cliffhanger finale, however; the episode's closing moments saw her unconscious, seriously injured following a car crash. Season 2 would reveal if she survived, and it's easy to assume that because she's key to the show's storyline. Speaking with TVLine, actor Mariel Molino said fans shouldn't be complacent. Anything can happen in the NCIS franchise.

Police procedurals are a dime a dozen on primetime television. It's an inherently cinematic profession with chases and gun fights that get viewers invested from week to week. As such, it's a pleasant surprise when one turns out to be actually entertaining, which is a far easier task when you have the ever-charismatic Nathan Fillion at the helm. 

"The Rookie" proves how you can teach an old dog new tricks, as John Nolan (Fillion) moves from Pennsylvania to Los Angeles to join the city's police force despite being 45 years old. He's much older than the much younger rookies on the squad, but over the course of the show's run, he shows how a unique perspective can help with solving cases. 

The show mixes action with personal drama well, to the point where the show even sparked the spinoff "The Rookie: Feds for a while, until ABC cancelled it after just one season.

According to Deadline.com, and the sources, CBS did indeed renew their rebooted Hollywood Squares game show for a brand new season 2, and they did it pretty early. They decided to renew it back in late February 2025. During the season 2 renewal announcement, CBS also renewed some of their other popular shows like: Tracker, Fire Country, Elsbeth, NCIS, NCIS: Origins, NCIS: Sydney and more. CBS Entertainment president Amy Reisenbach made a very positive statement about the shows they renewed during the renewal announcement. She said, "This season, our new and returning series continue to showcase CBS as the leader in launching and programming the biggest hits with mass appeal for broadcast and streaming viewers. These returning shows represent a mix of long-standing hits and a new generation of fan favorites.

Since the advent of streaming, prestige shows, which often lean toward being an elongated movie, whose story is told over multiple seasons of TV, have become the norm. With more and more shows leaving behind the age-old formula of 20-episode seasons, the future of procedural dramas, which were the heavy hitters in the 2000s and early 2010s, remains uncertain.

Although shows like NCIS are here to stay, which was renewed for its 23rd season last month, the CBS drama will be adapting to the changing entertainment landscape by incorporating several shifts.

Season 23 of the world's number one franchise features a massive milestone. NCIS will celebrate 500 episodes aired sometime in the upcoming season. The show and the wider NCIS-verse have celebrated various milestones throughout the years, including 100, 200, 250 episodes, and even 1000 overall episodes in the NCIS universe. Showrunner Steven D. Binder is already thinking of ways to mark this major achievement. "It’s not that we don’t have ideas,” he told TV Line when discussing the challenge of doing something they have done before, but differently. "It’s just, which one’s worthy of this [milestone]?” he added. Binder revisited some of the things they had done before, saying:

"The only early thought is the same thought that we had for 250, 300, 400, 1,000th, which is to do something really special and worthy of that number, and what does that look like? At various times, it’s been about going back to the pilot.

According to the folks over at Deadline.com, and their sources, CBS did officially renew Elsbeth for a brand new season 3. In fact, it turns out that CBS was so confident in Elsbeth's performance that they went ahead and renewed it quite early back in late February 2025. During this renewal announcement, CBS also renewed a couple of other top shows like NCIS, Ghosts, FBI, Matlock and more. In fact, they gave it a super early renewal way back in late February of 2025. During Ghosts' season 5 renewal announcement, CBS also renewed their other top shows: Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage, NCIS: Origins and Matlock for new seasons. LL Cool J's NCIS character, Special Agent Sam Hanna, first appeared in Season 1 of NCIS: Los Angeles. After reprising his role in Season 22, episode 18, of NCIS, many fans wondered if they could expect to see Sam again in the future.

Per TVInsider, NCIS executive producer Steven D. Binder addressed this possibility. Binder has stated that there is no official word on whether LL Cool J will return to the show next season.However, he did not rule out the possibility, stating, "But I, as a showrunner, say LL always has a place at NCIS. They all do. They're all great. They're pros. We love having them." He continued, "It's just people have very busy schedules, especially he does. So making it work is a logistical challenge and probably the bottleneck more than anything to why you may or may not see more. Not because there's not a desire and a will,...

CBS has set its fall 2025 schedule, which features a Blue Bloods spinoff and three NCIS shows in one night. As more shows continue to be renewed or canceled, CBS is the first broadcast network to release its fall 2025 schedule. NCIS: Origins season 2 is among the high-profile shows that have already been confirmed to be returning in the fall, while Matthew Gray Gubler's Einstein was pushed to the 2026-2027 television season.

As per TVLine, there will be a three-hour NCIS block on Tuesdays, with NCIS, NCIS: Origins, and NCIS: Sydney airing consecutively.
