Four tennis governing bodies have taken drastic measures in their fight against online abuse that is directed at players by use of a real-time monitoring service.
The Wta has joined forces with the International Tennis Federation (Itf), All England Club, and the United States Tennis Association (Usta) to protect players against the constant harassment and vile messages they regularly receive on social media that impact their preparation and performance.
Online abuse has also been detrimental to player's mental health in the aftermath of losing matches. Disgruntled gamblers who forfeit their wagers bombard the social media accounts of tennis players with hate messages and even death threats.
The women's governing body noted in its press release that Threat Matrix - a specialist service developed by AI company Signify Group, will significantly help tackle the issue by monitoring players' social media profiles on X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, YouTube, Facebook, and TikTok.

When Shoshannah Stern was six years old, she asked her mother for an agent. The actress and creator of “This Close’ on Sundance Now doesn’t know how she knew what an agent was at that age, but once she got it in her head that acting was what she wanted to do, she never let it out of her sights. Stern booked her first professional gig on “Off Centre” after attending Gallaudet University and then went onto series such as “Threat Matrix,” “Jericho,” “Weeds” and “Supernatural” before launching “This Close” with Josh Feldman.
Do you consider “Off Centre,” your first TV show, your big break?

Mike Delfino may be a man of few words, but his portrayer James Denton is all talk. Which was certainly good news for this TV Addict who was recently given the opportunity to chat with the affable actor about all things Desperate Housewives. Will Mike and Susan get their happily-ever-after? What’s the mood on the set as the show prepares to say goodbye? And what’s next for the man who has spent the better part of the past decade playing America’s favorite handyman? Find out for yourself after the jump.
Have you noticed a shift in the show’s story-lines since the announcement that this season of Desperate Housewives would be its last?
James Denton: I don’t believe so. I think [Creator] Marc Cherry had a pretty good feel for when the show was going to end based on the first couple of episodes that felt...

The 2010-11 season is still pretty young, but it's safe to say that it's not going down in TV history as the start of a new golden age.
So far no new series has established itself as a breakout hit or etched itself on the pop-culture landscape. Yes, there have been some popular successes ("Hawaii Five-0," "Mike & Molly") and a few critical darlings ("Boardwalk Empire," "Terriers"), but nothing so far has broken into the Holy-cow-did-you-see-that-last-night club.
The relative lack of buzz around this fall's crop of new shows got us thinking: Which season in the past decade or so has produced the best new TV? There have been two pretty amazing brilliant years, a handful of so-so seasons and a couple of real stinkers. Zap2it ranks the best seasons for new shows since 2000-01 in ascending order:

"Gravity," whose cast includes Laura Harris, Christina Cox, Malik Yoba and Florentine Lahme, is set in the near future and revolves around eight astronauts from five countries who undertake a mysterious six-year mission through the solar system.
The FtvS-produced series, slated to air on ABC this summer, is a co-venture with Vancouver-based Omni Film Prods., whose Brian Hamilton and Michael Chechik also exec produce.

The American Cinema Editors has elected Oscar-winning editor Alan Heim as its new president. Heim, whose editing credits include All That Jazz, Network and, most recently, this summer's The Notebook, was handpicked by ACE members for a two-year term. He takes the reins from outgoing president Tina Hirsch, who served the maximum two terms and was subsequently elected to serve on the ACE board. Christopher Cooke (ABC's Threat Matrix) was re-elected secretary, having served in that position since 1998. It is a berth that can be held indefinitely. Newly elected board members include Lillian Benson, Edgar Burcksen, who serves as editor of ACE's Cinema Editor magazine, Allan Holzman, Randy Roberts and Rick Shaine. They join Stephen Lovejoy, Martin Nicholson, Ted Rich and Eric Sears. Elected to the associate board of directors are Claudia Finkle, Harry Miller and Stan Salfas. Michael Tronick, who is cutting Mr. and Mrs. Smith, was elected vp in the 2003 election and is midway through a two-year term. ACE is an honorary society of motion picture editors founded in 1950. The organization will hold its 55th annual ACE Eddies awards gala in the winter.
Emile Levisetti, head of Industry Entertainment's TV production division, has left the management-production firm to ink an overall deal with Touchstone TV. Under the two-year pact, which includes an option for a third year, Levisetti will continue to serve as an executive producer on the comedy Hope & Faith, a co-production of Touchstone and Industry TV. Levisetti, who will continue to commute between New York, where Hope & Faith is based, and Los Angeles, also will be developing other projects for the studio. In addition to Hope & Faith, Levisetti this past season executive produced the Touchstone/Industry TV drama Threat Matrix.

In one big swoop, ABC has given full-season pickups to six of its seven new series, including all four comedies. The back-nine orders for Hope & Faith, I'm With Her, It's All Relative and Married to the Kellys mark the second consecutive season in which ABC has picked up all of its freshman comedies. "It's a nice day here," ABC entertainment president Susan Lyne said. "Our comedy department has done just an amazing job building a truly formidable comedy schedule." The network's batting average also has improved on the drama side. ABC has picked up two of its three series --10-8 and Threat Matrix -- versus the quick demise of all three freshman drama series in fall 2002. The remaining new drama, Karen Sisco, has received an order for four additional scripts, and talks are under way between the networks and the show's producer, Universal Network TV, for a potential episode pickup.

The latest installment of Survivor kicked off the fall season in a big way for CBS on Thursday, powering the eye network to an easy victory for the night. The opening 90-minute edition of Survivor: Pearl Islands averaged 21.1 million viewers and an 8.4 rating/23 share in the adults 18-49 demographic, according to Nielsen Media Research. That was down slightly from fall 2002's premiere of Survivor: Thailand (23 million, 9.6/28 in 18-49), but the numbers may have been dented by the lack of power in mid-Atlantic markets Thursday night because of the damage caused by Hurricane Isabel. By contrast, the 8 p.m. debut of ABC's new high-octane drama Threat Matrix proved no threat whatsoever. The drama about homeland security efforts averaged 7.6 million viewers and a 2.2/6 in adults 18-49. From 9-11 p.m., however, ABC perked up with Extreme Makeover (8.6 million, 3.1/8) and Primetime Thursday (10.1 million, 3.8/11).
