Animation veteran Butch Hartman, creator of Nickelodeon’s “The Fairly OddParents” and “Danny Phantom,” launched his own independent animation studio to produce and finance original faith-based and mainstream programming for kids and families. Butch Hartman Studios’ first production is the expansion of Hartman-created kids series “The Garden Cartoon.”

Exec produced by his wife Julieann through Garden Productions, “The Garden Cartoon” season one is available on Angel Studios and on various streaming platforms through distribution partner N Circle Entertainment. Now production is underway on season two while several “Garden Cartoon” movies, some timed to Christian holidays, will be distributed by BMG-Global. Capitol Records will continue to handle select songs from the series.

The studio’s privately-funded development slate also includes “Little Harps,” set at a Guardian Angel school that prepares new recruits to help kids on earth (aimed at ages 3-8); “Dragon Drive-Thru,” which follows a trio of dragons who...

‘The Fairly OddParents’ Creator Butch Hartman Launches Faith-Based Animation Studio for Kids
Image
Butch Hartman, the creator of two of Nickelodeon’s most famous kids shows in “The Fairly OddParents” and “Danny Phantom,” is going in a new direction for his next animation venture.

Hartman is set to launch Butch Hartman Studios, which will be an independent animation studio with the goal of producing and financing uplifting and original faith-based animated projects for both kids and families. The studio bills itself as a full-service production studio employing over 40 animation crew members, many of whom have worked on his past shows. Hartman’s longtime colleague Taylor Bradbury is a senior producer at the company.

The studio already has four different projects in development, and Hartman has even secured distribution deals with Angel Studios, which released the animated “The King of Kings” last month, and BMG-Global, which has also released a variety of faith-based movies and series. 15 Best Voice Actors Of All Time, Ranked
Image
Most of Hollywood's biggest talents are known by their faces. However, a notable few are beloved for their voice. In the often underappreciated art of voice acting, a host of otherwise unrecognizable names have helped define pop culture institutions and inspire generations of viewers by lending their vocals to characters we all know and love. From Homer Simpson to SpongeBob SquarePants, the voice actor is a foundational part of the entertainment ecosystem, yet they rarely see the same spotlight that live-action stars receive almost daily.

In rectification of that, let's recognize a who's who of voice acting legends by counting down the best voice actors of all time. As you can imagine, the specific rankings in this list are arbitrary, as all of these folks are exceptionally talented and largely for the same reasons. There are also plenty of folks we don't have the digital real estate to include, so...

20 Years Ago, Avatar: The Last Airbender Changed Kids' Shows (And Television) Forever
Image
"Avatar: The Last Airbender" premiered on Nickelodeon 20 years ago, with the two-part opener airing on February 21, 2005, and the third episode following just four days later on February 25. I was in the second grade at the time, and I learned about the show on the playground. Instead of pantomiming lightsaber battles or whatever passed for football in the second grade, my two best friends told me that they wanted to play "Avatar: The Last Airbender." I didn't watch Nickelodeon, being more of a Saturday morning 4Kids loyalist myself, but you can't admit something like that at recess, so I played along and tried to pick up the "rules" of hurling pretend wind and fire at each other.

That summer, I caught a rerun of "Avatar" Season 1, Episode 6, "Imprisoned," while flipping channels on vacation. By the time the show came back from its mid-Season 1 break in September, I was already hooked, having...

The 5 Best TV Shows Of All Time, According To IMDb
Image
When it comes to TV, the IMDb rating system is a little strange. For instance, TV episodes tend to have a higher rating range than movies; whereas the #1 movie ever on the platform, "Shawshank Redemption," has a 9.2 rating, it's not uncommon for TV episodes to get a 9.9 rating. Or, in the case of the "Breaking Bad" episode "Ozymandias," it even reached a full 10 out of 10.

There are some other quirks to look out for, like how the early episodes of a lot of shows are rated deceptively low. Why is the first episode of "The Bear" only rated a 7.6, for instance, whereas later episodes of the show are rated much higher? In this case, I don't think it's because the opening episodes were worse in quality, but that the audience members who didn't vibe with the series simply stopped watching after the first few episodes, and were no longer around...

Nickelodeon's Underrated Superhero Show Is Long Overdue For A Revival
Image
Danny Phantom, a fun and underrated superhero series, deserves a modern revival to explore new storytelling possibilities. The show's unique ghostly aesthetic and well-developed characters make it a perfect fit for today's superhero-heavy TV landscape. A reboot or continuation of Danny Phantom could offer fresh perspectives on the original while exploring new supernatural elements.

Nickelodeon's animated take on the superhero genre, Danny Phantom, was a deceptively fun series that deserves a modern revival. The superhero genre has evolved into one of the most widespread genres, with plenty of grim and light-hearted riffs on the classic archetypes filling big-screens and televisions alike. In an era of show revivals, this would give underrated chapters in animation history the perfect chance to come back.

Shows like Netflix's Avatar: The Last Airbender have highlighted how animated shows from that era can get a television revival. from a new perspective. One that deserves...

Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender Series Will Expand Fan-Favorite Villain’s Introduction
Image
Netflix’s Avatar: The Last Airbender showrunner Albert Kim teased Azula’s introduction in the highly-anticipated live-action adaptation.

In the original animated series, Princess Azula only had a brief appearance at the end of Season 1 following Zuko and Iroh’s official exile from the Fire Nation. However, it seems like this won’t be the case for the upcoming Netflix series, as the fan-favorite villain is set to take on a much larger role in the first installment. Speaking with GamesRadar+, Kim opened up about the creative team’s decision to expand Azula’s Season 1 storyline, teasing that the live-action Avatar: The Last Airbender series will definitely feature new events that were not seen in the original.

20 Best Nickelodeon Halloween Episodes, According To IMDb
Image
Nickelodeon has a wide range of Halloween episodes in their catalog, ranging from silly to spooky, across their original programming. Many of Nickelodeon's popular shows, such as Rugrats, Sam & Cat, and The Wild Thornberrys, have Halloween-themed episodes that are kid-friendly and entertaining. Other notable Nickelodeon Halloween episodes include those from iCarly, Fairly OddParents, Danny Phantom, Hey Arnold!, SpongeBob SquarePants, and The Loud House, all of which offer fun and memorable Halloween storylines.

While Disney Channel focused mainly on the world of live-action children's television and Cartoon Network focused on animated children's television, Nickelodeon arose as the best of both worlds, including some of its holiday content, like Nickelodeon's Halloween episodes. This was fitting since the network was the first cable channel designed exclusively for children.

Over the years, Nickelodeon has created wildly successful live-action and animated shows under a wide range of genres from real life to superhero/fantasy worlds.

Ron Perlman Played Against Type in This Fantasy Drama TV Series
Image
It's safe to say that Ron Perlman has solidified himself as an icon of pop culture, through his iconic roles and his public persona outside of them. He's played some of the most badass characters on film and television, including but not limited to Slade in Teen Titans, The Lich in Adventure Time, Clay Morrow in Sons of Anarchy, and of course his most outstanding role, Mr. Lancer in Danny Phantom... oh, right, also Hellboy. He's been a long-time collaborator of the legendary Guillermo Del Toro since his directorial debut in Cronos, but he's also the kind of actor who will be a guaranteed standout in any film, no matter the overall quality, a true mark of a great performer. He's had his hand in everything — film, television, voice-acting, video games, even doing some stage work up until 1996, and no one would complain if he came back to it.

Why WayForward’s 2009 Horror Game ‘Lit’ Deserves a Second Chance
Image
Sometimes, dead is better.

If you buy Wayforward’s horror action/puzzle game Lit on Steam right now, you’ll get a 2D game about using light sources to find your way through a series of darkened rooms, with an art style that makes it look like a lost episode of “Danny Phantom.” It’s alright for what it is.

That’s not the original Lit, though. The first Lit is a “dead” game from 2009, which went down with the ship when Nintendo closed the WiiWare shop in 2019, and which was one of the best-kept secrets on the Wii. The currently-available version of Lit is a 2015 “reimagining” for iOS/Android that comes off like a Saturday-morning cartoon version of the 2009 game.

It’s a weird situation for a dead game. Lit has been reincarnated, so to speak, but as an arguably worse version of itself.

You play Lit 2009 as Jake,...

More Screen Time During Lockdown? Not for These Kids Cable Channels
Nicktoons
Even if parents are going batty trying to keep their little ones entertained while cooped up at home during this pandemic, they’re not necessarily plunking the kids in front of the TV — not linear TV at least. Meanwhile, certain streaming services are seeing a lift in interest, underscoring the next generation’s shift in television viewing habits.

For the week of March 23-29, viewership of ad-supported kids’ linear cable networks — a group that includes Cartoon Network, Nickelodeon, Disney Xd and others — slid 3% from the comparable week in March 2019, according to Bernstein research analysts, citing Nielsen figures. And that year-over-year decline actually marks a major improvement: prior to shelter-in-place measures being implemented, weekly viewership of those channels among 2- to 11-year-olds had been plummeting an average of 25% since the start of 2020.

“Even though the rate of decline significantly decelerated, it’s still in negative territory even though time available in...

Emily S. Whitten: Bunsen is a Beast!
Butch Hartman has a long and storied history of creating great cartoon shows. Not only is he responsible for The Fairly OddParents, the second longest-running Nicktoon on Nickelodeon, but he’s also created several other popular shows including Danny Phantom and T.U.F.F. Puppy. And now here he is once again with a unique new Nickelodeon show, Bunsen is a Beast.

Bunsen is a Beast is a cartoon about Bunsen (voiced by Jeremy Rowley), the first beast to be integrated into the Muckledunk Middle School, and his new human friend Mikey Munroe (Ben Giroux). It also features self-appointed school safety monitor and beast-hater Amanda Killman (Kari Wahlgren) and a collection of other oddball characters such as Ms. Flap (Cheri Oteri) and Darcy, who circle the main pair during their adventures.

But what is a Beast, per se? Well, in Hartman’s creation, even within the Beast world there appears to be great variety,...

Emily S. Whitten: Nickelodeon and Nostalgia @ Sdcc 2016
As you undoubtedly know, San Diego’s Comic-Con International happened this past weekend, and I was fortunate to be amongst the tens of thousands of attendees. There was, as always, a mega-ton to see and do, and it was hard to keep the Fomo (Fear Of Missing Out) from getting completely out of control over the 4.5 days of the con. To stay sane, though, at some point you just have to accept that you’re going to miss a bunch, and focus on what you do have the opportunity to see.

This year, one of my main interests was what Nickelodeon was showcasing. Of course, Nickelodeon is always on my radar, and particularly the current Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles animated series, which I adore. But even beyond the coolness that is the Tmnt, this year, Nickelodeon was focusing on its past – in the best way possible. Through its late-night programming block of “The Splat,...

Warner Bros. Animation continues to pump out movie straight to DVD DC Comics movies, and today it's been announced that they are developing Justice League Doom which will be inspired by Mark Waid's Tower of Babel storyline.

Danny Phantom: Season 1
Butch Hartman struck Nickelodeon gold (Orange? Slime?) when he created The Fairly OddParents, a duo of fairies who attempted to improve the lives of their two wards but often just made things more complicated via magic. The animation style was crisp with bold black and white outlines making the series sleek but still very cartoonish. About three years into the successful run of OddParents, Nickelodeon gave Hartman a second series, Danny Phantom, which, while retaining the same visual style foundation of his first series, received a slightly more mature twist to its aesthetic. Unfortunately, the visuals were the only real twist made and the Danny Phantom never managed to acquire the same wit or sense of creative wonder that made OddParents enjoyable across a spectrum of age groups. What Hartman delivered instead was a product with the same amount of flair but an episodic formula that could have been just...
