Netflix has moved closer to opening the doors to the chocolate factory after confirming it has greenlit The Golden Ticket, a reality competition series inspired by Willy Wonka.
This comes nine months after Deadline revealed that Eureka Productions, the Fremantle-owned company behind series including The Mole and Fox’s The Floor, won a bake-off for the rights to produce the series.
The Golden Ticket has now begun casting for contestants. It comes after Netflix acquired the rights to the Roald Dahl Company in 2021 and marks the first Charlie and the Chocolate Factory-inspired series.

Today, Netflix announced a new competition series, The Golden Ticket, inspired by the beloved and unpredictable universe of Willy Wonka. Eureka Productions will produce the series.
Lucky contestants will have the chance to enter Wonka’s Chocolate Factory, but there’s a catch—only players who find a coveted golden ticket will gain entry to the factory.
But a golden ticket doesn’t guarantee a sweet ride once the gates open; only those who can adapt, strategize, and withstand the unknown will make it through.
Set inside a retro-futuristic dreamscape, this high-stakes social experiment will challenge players not just physically but mentally as they navigate games, tests, and temptations designed to probe their instincts, resilience, and ability to thrive in chaos.

Netflix has ordered a new reality competition series inspired by Roald Dahl’s classic Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.
The series, The Golden Ticket, will combine elements of strategy, adventure and social dynamics, as contestants seek to gain entry to a “retro-futuristic” chocolate factory (via a golden ticket, of course) and then try to make it through all the challenges they will encounter.
Eureka Productions (The Mole, Dating Around, TwentySomethings Austin) is producing the series for Netflix.
The show will be the first project inspired by the world of Willy Wonka since Netflix acquired the Dahl intellectual property in 2021. Dahl’s other books include Matilda, The Fantastic Mr. Fox, James and the Giant Peach, and The Bfg, among many others. Until now, however, the streamer had not adapted arguably his most famous work for any film or TV projects (Warner Bros. released a Wonka film in 2023 that pre-dated the Netflix...

In the original Charlie and the Chocolate Factory text, the eccentric Willy Wonka discovered Oompa Loompas and invited them to live and work at his wondrous chocolate factory. The three film adaptations of Roald Dahl's children's novel, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, introduced the Oompa Loompas to viewers differently. In 1971, Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory revealed them to be smaller than average humanoid creatures with orange skin and cartoonish features. Tim Burton's 2005 adaptation of the story depicted them as identical workers — all played by actor Deep Roy — dressed in flashy clothes. The 2023 prequel Wonka follows the visual style of the 1971 film, with a single orange Oompa Loompa played by Hugh Grant. All three versions depict them as happy in their work, and the factory as a kind of fairytale kingdom where they can live in safety.

The premiere of Disney’s live-action Snow White has brought even more problems to the door of the latest reimagined movie from the Disney vault. Taking its premise from the original 1937 animated classic, Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the film has been marred by controversy from the casting of Rachel Zegler in the titular role and both her and costar Gal Gadot’s opposing political opinions on the Israel-Gaza war. However, another huge point of contention has been the way Disney has handled the movie’s seven little people – which has led to a number of actors with dwarfism protesting at the premiere.
Disney’s attempt to remake Snow White has not been a smooth one, and the subject of its seven central characters has been a particularly divisive one. While appearing at the premiere of the movie, actress Ali Chapman – who has dwarfism – slammed the decision of Disney...

Spoilers for "The Electric State" to follow.
There are great film adaptations, like Peter Jackson's "Lord of the Rings" trilogy, and there are bad film adaptations, like Tim Burton's "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory." Then there's 50 feet of crap (as Brad Pitt puts it in "Moneyball"), and then there's "The Electric State." Netflix's allegedly $320 million Russo Brothers extravaganza is a complete disaster from start to finish, filled with unnecessary cameos, embarrassing screenwriting, and set pieces that beg the question: What happened to all that money?
Under normal circumstances, a movie like this would just go down as a simple misfire, and that would be that. But it's even more upsetting because the book on which it's based, Simon Stålenhag's "The Electric State," is incredible. It's also still pretty niche despite Stålenhag's work having become a bit more mainstream over the last several years. That means that for many,...

As most schoolchildren know, the novels of Roald Dahl are whimsical, delightful, and full of spite. Dahl's stories were rarely sentimental screeds about the magic of childhood, angling instead to describe how horrible kids have it. In most of Dahl's novels, adults are depicted as horrid and abusive, screaming at children and often physically harming them, all while the children live in poverty and destitution. Kids are only free once they stand up to the evil adults in their lives and find a way out of their miserable, Dickensian surroundings.
The films based on the works of Roald Dahl rarely capture the author's impeccable sense of childhood misery. The films, often made by American studios, tend to skew more traditionally "Hollywood," giving them happier endings, more action-packed scenes, and fewer moments of gentle, unusual whimsy. Naturally, Dahl disliked the films based on his books, mostly stemming from his overwhelming...

When James Bond made his big-screen debut in 1962 with "Dr. No," the world was a decidedly different place than it is now. The United States and the Soviet Union were none-too-quietly waging the Cold War (the Cuban Missile Crisis occurred during 007's first month in theaters), the Civil Rights Movement was challenging systemic racism all over America, and women were fighting for equal pay and control over their own bodies. Perhaps "decidedly" is a touch strong.
As the world grappled with massive political and social upheaval, the movies did what they do best and sent a mess of mixed messages. The industry has always taken seriously its role as a beacon of hope and enlightenment, but, this being a business, filmmakers have never shied away from trafficking in hoary, hurtful stereotypes provided they earned a big enough pop from the audience.

Fans of Johnny Depp have been watching his slow reintegration into Hollywood with interest in the years since his legal wrangling with Amber Heard came to a conclusion. While the actor has stayed away from the mainstream spotlight since then, he has been slowly building up a list of potential roles, one of which sees him playing Satan in the latest movie from visionary director Terry Gilliam. After a long period without any updates, it seems that the movie is still being worked on and is expected to start filming this year.
Originally entitled The Carnival at the End of Days, the film will now reportedly just run under the truncated title of Carnival. Considering Gilliam is behind such movies as The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnasus, the original title was not exactly out of character, but it looks like short and intriguing is now the name of the game.

Helena Bonham Carter's Bellatrix Lestrange ranks among the best villains in the "Harry Potter" franchise. She's one of Lord Voldemort's (Ralph Fiennes) most loyal disciples, and she's arguably even more sadistic than He Who Must Not Be Named, which is evident by the way in which she gleefully torments her victims. These days, it's difficult to imagine anyone other than Carter in the role of Bellatrix. Be that as it may, another actor was initially cast as the wicked Death Eater.
According to a 2005 report from The Mirror, the late Helen McCrory was originally set to play Bellatrix in "Harry Potter and the Order and the Phoenix." However, she had to be recast shortly after getting the part. The reason? McCrory had become pregnant (as Newsround revealed while reporting on the re-casting in 2006), which would have been noticeable during some of the film's more action-packed scenes featuring Bellatrix.

Quick LinksRoald Dahl’s "Lamb to the Slaughter" Was Adapted Into an Episode of Alfred Hitchcock Presents"Lamb to the Slaughter" Was Only One of 17 Episodes Directed by Alfred HitchcockAlfred Hitchcock Presents Was Rebooted in 1985
A combination that the average viewer might not expect is that of acclaimed horror pioneer director Alfred Hitchcock and children's author Roald Dahl. Dahl was mostly known for his whimsical and offbeat children's books, like Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, The Witches, Matilda, and James and the Giant Peach. However, Dahl had another side to his writing that involved numerous collections of short stories, both weird and bizarre, including a collection written for Playboy Magazine between 1965 and 1974. Peel back the layers of Dahl's storied career, and it seems to suit Hitchcock's sentiments completely. So, when one of his stories was chosen as fodder for an episode of Hitchcock's TV show, Alfred Hitchcock Presents (1955-1965), it made perfect sense.

Thanks to breakout roles in the Scream revival, Netflix's Wednesday and last year's Beetlejuice sequel, Jenna Ortega is fast becoming one of the most sought-after young actors in Hollywood, so it probably won't come as much of a surprise to learn that she's being courted by Marvel Studios.
We have previously heard that Ortega was being eyed for a superhero part, but Daniel Richtman is now reporting that the actress is being considered for a big Marvel Cinematic Universe role.
It's always worth noting that Marvel meets with a lot of talent, but if Ortega has actually entered negotiations for an upcoming project, there's a good chance the trades will get hold of the story before too long.
Even if she is in talks, there's no guarantee that things will work out. Ortega has a busy schedule ahead, with a lead role in Taika Waititi's Klara and the Sun adaptation,...

Certain actors receive their breakout roles quite early in their film careers and go on to become household names. For example, stars like Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Leonardo DiCaprio made an impact on the industry quite quickly and have gone on to become well-respected actors. As such, it seems that in order to make it in the movie business, actors must keep on pushing.
However, some actors make one hit movie and step away from the spotlight for good. While this typically happens with child stars, a lot of adult actors have moved onto greener pastures after appearing in a film. As such, some of the industry's biggest stars have now built unexpected lives for themselves.

"I only directed something someone else wrote once and it was a misbegotten adventure from the beginning, as much my fault as anybody else's." Those are the words of director David Koepp, speaking to UCLA in 2022. The misbegotten adventure in question was 2015's "Mortdecai," a globe-trotting comedy starring then-a-lister Johnny Depp. It was a massive failure both critically and commercially, one that Koepp doesn't seem to have an interest in defending.
Koepp is no stranger to big hits. As a screenwriter, he helped turn "Jurassic Park" into one of the biggest movies ever, and that's just the tip of the iceberg. As a director? It's a touch more spotty, but the man knows his way around a success. He previously helmed the thriller "Secret Window,...

It's been more than a year since Hugh Grant played Lofty the Oompa-Loompa in the musical fantasy Wonka. However, the actor still finds himself haunted by comments he made about the movie during its press tour.
In an interview with Variety, Grant explained that comments made in jest are often taken out of context and reported as fact. "Everyone said, 'Yes, we loved it. We loved it. We loved it," the actor recalled, referring to when the cast of Wonka was asked if they enjoyed making the movie during the press tour. "And when they got to me, just for a comedy moment at the end, I said, 'I hated it.'"

Though Tim Burton has had a long career and his most successful film made a killing at the box office, it hasn't aged nearly as well as a 1999 made-for-tv movie that cost a fraction of Burton's budget. Tim Burton's movies have had wild swings in terms of success, with his heyday undoubtedly coming in the 1980s and early '90s, with classics like Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, The Nightmare Before Christmas (though Burton didn't direct), and Batman Returns. Since then, his career has been more sporadic, with highs like 2003's Big Fish, but also some real lows, like 2012's Dark Shadows, with the box office and critical reviews to match.
Recently, Burton has experienced a little bit of a career resurgence, thanks to trying something new while also returning to an old friend. The sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was a box office success, generating largely positive reviews and racking up $451 million on a budget of $100 million.

35 years later, Tim Burton still hasn't beat his own box office record, which he accomplished with his third feature movie. Though he has directed many popular titles throughout his career, even Tim Burton's best movies aren’t known for being blockbuster successes. Rather, they're loved for their signature gothic tone and practical visuals, as well as their weird worlds and unique characters. The director's filmography has some contrasting titles, ranging from great to controversial to middling, and consists mainly of remakes of popular stories and Burton originals.
Notably, Burton finally gained redemption after Dumbo's flop and is having an artistic resurgence at the moment — having re-found his passion for unconventional and grotesque narratives with the Netflix adaptation of the Addams Family, Wednesday, and the sequel to his 1988 cult classic, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Accordingly, many were on the lookout for Burton's response to a possible The Nightmare Before Christmas sequel, as...

Peter Ostrum was born in Dallas, Texas in 1957, but spent a substantial portion of his childhood in Cleveland, Ohio. It was in Cleveland that he began acting professionally, appearing in children's theater productions at the Cleveland Play House. The story goes that talent scouts from Paramount, sometime in 1970, were scouring children's theaters looking for potential actors to play the five central children in a film adaptation of Roald Dahl's confection-based 1964 novel "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory."
The 12-year-old Ostrum was asked to pose for a few Polaroids and was recorded reading passages from Dahl's book into a tape recorder. He also sang "My Country 'Tis of Thee" as proof of his singing abilities. The pictures and recordings were then flown to New York and shown to the film's producers. Ostrum was perfect and beat out many, many other children for the role of Charlie Bucket. His experience on stage gave him an edge.

The coveted IMDb's Top 250 wouldn't be anything without the directors who made the movies. Johnny Depp has been one of the biggest working movie stars since the '90s, and possibly even the '80s if his smaller roles are to be considered, and yet the actor's net worth in 2024 is a lot lower than it's ever been in his career. Johnny Depp's professional career began in 1984 when he appeared in a little horror film titled, Nightmare on Elm Street. While many now-famous actors have started in horror, Depp's performance was particularly notable and the longevity of the franchise means his debut is lauded rather than teased at.

Tim Burton may have reawakened the Ghost With the Most in the recently released sequel to his 1988 comedy-horror film “Beetlejuice,” but that didn’t seem to convince the filmmaker to revisit some of his other classics.
During a Q&a at the Marrakech International Film Festival on Saturday (via IndieWire), Burton dismissed the possibility of developing a sequel to 1990’s “Edward Scissorhands,” which starred Johnny Depp as the titular role.
“There are certain films I don’t want to make a sequel to,” Burton said. “I didn’t want to make a sequel to that because it felt like a one-off thing. Throughout his career, Tim Burton has collaborated often with the same actors. At the top of the list is Johnny Depp, with whom he teamed up no less than eight times, and the filmmaker addressed the possibility of working together again.

Tim Burton has addressed the prospect of reuniting with his frequent muse Johnny Depp in a new movie. The iconic director, whose debut feature was 1985's Pee-Wee's Big Adventure, has used the Pirates of the Caribbean star in many of his productions, generally playing exaggerated characters that require a great deal of makeup. The eight-movie roster of Johnny Depp and Tim Burton collaborations includes 1990's Edward Scissorhands, 2010's Alice in Wonderland, 2005's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, 1994's Ed Wood, and 2007's Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, though Burton has not directed Depp since 2012's Dark Shadows.
Tim Burton recently spoke with IndieWire on the red carpet at the Marrakech International Film Festival. When discussing the prospect of working with Depp again, he stated that he does not start a project with the intention of working with any particular actor, instead using actors to fit the needs of the story.

Despite his recent resurgence with Wednesday and Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Tim Burton has issued some caution about reports of his remaking a sci-fi classic. Burton is best known for his work in gothic-style filmmaking, having quickly established the genre penchant with 1988's Beetlejuice and carrying it on in everything from the Oscar-nominated Edward Scissorhands to his producing the stop-motion hits The Nightmare Before Christmas and Corpse Bride.
In addition to his original storytelling, Burton has also frequently found himself in the director's chair for remakes and reimaginings of iconic movies and novels. Beginning with his 1999 adaptation of Sleepy Hollow, the filmmaker has largely found financial success with his takes on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street and Alice in Wonderland, though all have seen a variety of responses from critics. Even still, that hasn't stopped him from eyeing bringing his vision to another iconic property.

Tim Burton has had a great career recovery with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, however, his remake of Attack of the 50 Foot Woman puts it in danger due to the original movie’s low Rotten Tomatoes score. Attack of the 50 Foot Woman was originally released in 1958 and followed the story of an heiress called Nancy who, after encountering an alien being, rampages through her town as a giant figure, aiming to get revenge on her cheating husband. 1958’s Attack of the 50 Foot Woman has shockingly low ratings, with just 21% on Rotten Tomatoes, because of its cheesy, low-budget action.
Although Tim Burton’s movies have become famous over the years for their gothic themes, the director’s output has been somewhat disappointing in the last decade. However, 2024’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice garnered good reviews and the cult classic movie sequel was a box office success, marking a significant career recovery for Burton.

The success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice has set up one major problem for Tim Burton's next movie, as it's unlikely that Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman will meet the level of success his $450 million sequel has garnered. Not only has the long-awaited sequel almost tripled its budget, but Beetlejuice 2 has hit several box office milestones during its time in theaters. The reception to Burton's work has been inconsistent for over a decade, with films like Dark Shadows and Dumbo performing poorly among critics. However, Beetlejuice 2 has changed this, and his remake of the 66-year-old sci-fi now faces high expectations.
Attack of the Fifty Foot Women must buck Burton's trend of disappointing remakes if his comeback after Beetlejuice 2 is to be successful. With that in mind, Burton's enthusiasm for sci-fi is key to Attack of the Fifty Foot Woman's remake, but it highlights the uphill battle...

Although horror is a movie genre of its own, there are several non-horror movies that have strange scenes that terrify children. Horror is a vast genre with many iconic franchises, including Scream, Halloween, and Friday the 13th. Despite the wide-encompassing genre, not all horror movies or TV shows are necessarily terrifying. There are even horror books that are not too scary, even if they provide a fright now and then. There are also several scary movies that are not horror films at all.
Sometimes, Hollywood produces media for children that is not meant to be scary, but they frighten kids regardless. There are several scary TV shows for kids, while other iconic kids' shows have unforgettable scary moments. These scenes are scary because of shocking deaths, character nightmares, or grotesque appearances of fantastical entities. Aside from TV shows, several films also have horrifying scenes that have utterly terrified kids, despite...

After the success of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice, Tim Burtons next movie will see the visionary director return to trickier terrain. Tim Burtons career has seen the director fall in and out of favor with critics, but 2024s belated Beetlejuice sequel Beetlejuice Beetlejuice was his biggest hit in a long time. As well as earning over $450 million at the box office, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice turned around a critical slump that began for Burton back in 2010. The directors live-action re-imagining of Alice in Wonderland failed to win over reviewers despite earning a billion at the box office, starting a string of failures.
