Costume designer Mary Zophres based much of the designs of the main characters on certain real-life figures. For instance, Mutt Williams (Shia LeBeouf) was based on Marlon Brando in The Wild One (1953), Irina Spalko (Cate Blanchett) was based on Marlene Dietrich, "Mac" George Michale (Ray Winstone) was based on Ernest Hemingway, and Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen) was based on Amelia Earhart.
Col. Dr. Irina Spalko:
Clearly I have chosen the wrong pressure point. Perhaps I can find a more sensitive one.
Col. Dr. Irina Spalko: Prinesite yom!
Marion Ravenwood: Get your hands off me, you rotten Russki son of a bitch!
Marion Ravenwood: Indiana Jones.
Marion Ravenwood: About time you showed up.
Mutt Williams: Mom!
Marion Ravenwood: Sweetheart.
Indiana Jones: "Mom"?
When Indy and Mutt are in the madhouse, the word Return is written on the walls in different languages. The German version is spelled wrong: "Ruckkehr" instead of "Rückkehr".
The movie begins with the Lucasfilm logo, followed by the 1954 Paramount "VistaVision" logo (with the text "PARAMOUNT" instead of "A PARAMOUNT PICTURE" and "A Viacom Company" instead of "A Gulf+Western Company" below "PARAMOUNT"). Gulf+Western became Paramount Communications in 1989, then merged with Viacom in 1994. The Paramount logo then dissolves into a gopher mound. (The static version of the current Paramount logo is seen at the end of the movie.)
