Recently when I watched this movie, I was spell bound. So perfect was the histrionic talent of the great thespian chevalier Sivaji. Interestingly when I watched this movie as a kid , almost everyone came down heavily on this movie. Sivaji's acting was dubbed as loud and garish and termed as 'overacting'. I shared that opinion too as I was a kid and knew nothing better.

Sivaji plays double role in this movie as uncle and nephew. One is the egoist atheist uncle and the other the humble, god fearing nephew. Both are lawyers and the movie has some dramatic turns. Right from the first frame of the movie until the very end Sivaji delivers. No words to describe his talent. The nine stars of this movie are for Sivaji and Sivaji alone. This movie is an instructive lesson in acting. Some of the songs are quite tuneful and apt to the scene.

    Absolutely enjoyable !

Sivaji ganesan plays double role in the movie. He exhibits the difference between the two roles in the first scene itself when the elder one takes on drinks, smokes pipe, plays golf and the younger one dutifully shown as religious one. If one just close his eyes and hears the dialogue, he will think two persons are playing the roles - such is the variance in dialogue delivery and voice. The mock court proceedings in the residence was superbly enacted with some humour by Nagesh and Mahendran. The mono acting by Sivaji ganesan at the last scene before coming to know about the judgement is simply superb. Also, his style of interrogation in the second murder charge with the witnesses was also wonderful. Also his lip movements to the songs and the dance movements in one of the songs (Athisaya ulagam) was superb. I read somewhere, that MSV sang the song (Palooti valarha kili) since TMS was away on a tour and the shooting was completed and later TMS completed. A portrayal of an Attorney having full confidence in his tongue power and display of two characteristics one humbleness and obedience and other confidence, style. Well supported by Nagesh, Mahendran, Pandaribai and Sundarrajan.
  • This movie shows the capability of sivaji ganasan on how to handle overplay and underplay characters.
  • Gauravam movie has one of the best display of acting ever on a silver screen by none other than the Master Actor Sivaji Ganesan. IF one watches the movie, any one will agree thats not a over statement at all. Sivaji portrays the Character of Rajnikanth with such talent and ease. Its easy to dismiss the acting as over acting or just histrionics. But those are ill informed conclusions and observations. If one carefully observes the performance, Sivaji not just conveys the dialogues in high tones and majesty(which is actually a stage technique he employs when necessary to keep the viewers attention) but facial expressions showed by Sivaji in each scenes, majesty, compassion, anger, fear of failure, concentration, all those emotions were subtly conveyed by the Master. Sivaji completely holds off the viewer on his performance in the last 45 minutes of the movie. Every one watching the movie should have felt unconsciously that they shed a drop of tears in their eyes. Thats Whats is called Mastery. Just watch this movie for the Masters talent in full display here.
