Huell Howser travels around California looking for interesting stories about the state's rich history, cultural diversity, landmarks, natural wonders, amazing people and points of interest, especially lesser known and out-of-the-way places.
Huell Howser approached Wells Fargo Bank to sponsor "California's Gold" when he first came up with the concept for the show. Wells Fargo agreed to sponsor the program with the stipulation that all thirteen PBS stations in California at the time would have to agree to broadcast it. Howser personally approached the thirteen stations and they all agreed to air the new show.
