The climactic showdown in the film, with Tony Stark, a.k.a. Iron Man, facing Obadiah Stane, a.k.a. Iron Monger, is based on Iron Man #200 (November 1986). A face-off occurs between Stane's larger, more powerful Iron Monger and Stark's greater experience, and an exploding reactor appears. However, the comic concludes with Stane committing suicide with a repulsor ray blast to the head.

Part of the closing credits are seen against computer-graphic renders of armoured suits. One of the renders is an armour with a Gatling gun attached - the War Machine suit, which would appear in Iron Man 2 (2010).
The mainland China release deletes the shot of Tony and Christine falling into bed together. It instead cuts straight from their first meeting to Christine waking up in his bedroom the next morning.
