- Big Boy Williams is a gangster who is smitten with the two girls in the next apartment. With the help of his violinist friend Grady Sutton he gets acquainted with the girls by posing as a musician.
- Gangster Bugsy McHugh wants to impress redhead June and blonde Carol, the girls who live across the courtyard. He hires violin teacher Grady to play while hidden from view, allowing Bugsy, seated on the window ledge across from the girls apt., to give the girls the impression he is playing. When Grady arrives, he opens the elevator door and accidentally knocks June to the floor. June forgives him, believing this clumsy girl-shy nerd is Bugsy because he is carrying two violin cases, which she thinks contain machine guns. Bugsy's ploy works well, and he is invited to the girls' apt., where he introduces himself as a violin teacher, which June readily believes because she thinks she has already met the machine gun toting gangster. It turns out that both girls are fascinated with gangsters and would love to meet the one next door so, she asks the real Bugsy to invite Grady to their apt. Bugsy asks the girls to join him for dinner and they agree, but ask him to invite "gangster" Grady in the hope that he will take them to a real gangster's restaurant and hangout. At the restaurant, Bugsy sees some of his gang and asks them to rough Grady up if he gets out of hand. He then tells Grady that he has arranged for one of his gang to take a fall when Grady hits him. Unfortunately for all concerned, top gangster Palermo and some of his gang arrive and Bugsy's friends decide it is best if they leave and Palermo and gang take their table. Palermo spots June and thinks she's a hot number and goes over to meet her. Grady thinks this is the fall guy and, after warning him to leave his girl alone, gets up and punches him. Grady is amazed to find the man still standing and Palermo tells Grady he likes his nerve and invites him to join him at his table. Grady takes his Stradivarius, which never leaves his side, and goes to Palermo's table. Palermo asks him if he is any good with that thing, thinking the violin is a machine gun, and Grady tells him he's one of the best. Palermo asks Grady if wants to work for him and says he will try him out immediately and tells him to take Maxie, one of the gang at his table, who messed up a murder, into the next room and "put him to sleep with that thing." Maxie and Grady go to the next room and Maxie puts on a blindfold, while Grady gets out his violin. While Grady's back is turned, Maxie takes a few gulps from a bottle of liquor on the table next to him, before Grady turns around and starts to be "Sleep Baby Sleep." In the main room, Palermo has the band play some loud music to cover up the sound of the machine gun fire. Annoyed by this, Grady puts his violin away, takes it, and goes out to tell the band to play "Sleep Baby Sleep," which Palermo okays. Meanwhile Maxie, assuming he is facing death, drinks the rest of the bottle and passes out. Grady, who had put his violin down while talking to the bandleader, by mistake picks up a violin case with a machine gun in it and returns to the room. When he takes out the machine gun, he is terrified and manages to shoot off a number of rounds, and thinks he has killed Maxie. The girls, who think Grady has been killed, are the first to arrive and are relieved to find him alive, while Grady is relieved when Carol points out that Maxie is drunk, not dead. Then Palermo comes in and, satisfied that Maxie is dead, insists Grady and the girls join him for a drink. They would like to leave before Palermo learns the truth but, they have no such luck as Maxie wakes up, leaves the room, wanders drunkenly around the restaurant and finally strikes a match against the back of Palermo's neck. Palermo tells his boys to get Grady, but Carol strikes one of them with a bottle, the other gangster takes the remains of the bottle out of her hand, the first gangster thinks the second hit him, and a restaurant-wide fight breaks out. Grady and the girls are about to leave the restaurant, when Grady goes back for his Stradivarius. Violin in hand, he and the girls jump in a cab, and Bugsy suddenly turns up and jumps on the running board, asking "aren't you going to take me?" June answers by knocking him off the cab with the Stradivarius, which breaks into pieces. Grady is distraught for a few seconds but, seeing the two beauties smiling on either side of him, he smiles as well, throws the violin scrap away, puts his arms around the girls shoulders and off they go.
