  • Yeah, it's not a masterpiece. I don't really know who would expect it to be. Joey has turned into a bit of a caricature compared to Friends, where he had shown some growth ,but it's still mildly amusing. The supporting cast are decent, particularly the women. Joey's sister is pretty funny and Jennifer Coolidge. I like Alex too. I enjoyed it for some light viewing and a few laughs. Some of it is a bit cringy since times have changed in the last 15 years, but I personally couldn't take it too seriously. It's Joey. Friends was obviously far superior and funnier, but this is okay and doesn't outstay it's welcome being only 2 seasons long. I'm glad I had a chance to see it.
  • One thing needs to be remembered that a spin off can never be compared with the original show. Similarly, Joey could not be compared to Friends. When Friends was over, Joey came as a lifesaver. I don't understand why people hate it, the show wasn't half bad. The ensemble cast for Joey worked just as well as Friends'. And Matt LeBlanc looked as adorable as ever. Loved the entire cast as well. Having said that, the second season doesn't work as good as the first, but it could have been better. But the story line was pretty good and was heading towards a definite ending. Another episode and Joey could have had a finished with a satisfying end. Give this show a try. It does preserve the spirit of Friend to a large extent, if not completely.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Joey Tribbiani is my favorite character on "Friends", but here the writing is not of the same caliber, and he comes across less childlike and more of a jerk. Andrea Anders is cute, sweet and likable; Drea de Matteo is pretty funny and pretty sexy. The production values are decent for a sitcom, although the sets look more fake than those of "Friends". The first few episodes of season 2 give you the false impression that it's going to be better than season 1, but it soon settles into the same kind of mediocrity. Anders' character becomes more one-dimensional and overly dependent on Joey. As for Jimmy, who is introduced in the middle of the second season and becomes a regular until the end, another comment on this page nails it: it's like having Janice in every episode of "Friends". These loud characters are entertaining in small doses only. This show is a pale shadow of its predecessor, but most episodes are a relatively painless way to kill 20 minutes. **1/2 out of 4.
  • The problem with "Joey" so far? The minds behind the show seem to have forgotten why we, as viewers, were so taken by Joey Tribbiani on "Friends."

As an idiotic buffoon, he was primarily a great comedic foil for the other characters, especially Chandler, and occasionally would have a solid storyline showcasing that side of him.

But it was the episodes showing that his heart was bigger than his brain -- like the one where he took Rachel out on a dinner date -- that gave Joey real depth and gave viewers a real reason to love the character.

In either case, though, Joey was just 1/6th of the equation, and the character was only asked to carry 6-10 minutes of any given episode, at the most.

Here, they're trying to make Joey carry the entire 24 minutes because, as it stands now, the supporting characters aren't compelling enough to warrant strong independent story lines of their own. And we haven't seen enough of the scenes that show Joey's heart.

It's not a problem that can't be fixed. I think they need to lay off some of the more stereotypical character jokes (Joey dumb, nephew smart, sister tough and oversexed) and put them in situations that are funny, but also make us care more about them. As it stands now, you could almost write the script with adjectives instead of character names, because the characters' natures so rarely change.

Personally, I'd love to see an episode where the supporting cast gets together to plan a surprise birthday party for Joey, with everybody having their own ideas of what to do, but ultimately we find out that none of them really knows Joey as well as they think they do. Something like that would be a great learning and growing experience for the show, its writers, and its characters.

But hey, that's just my opinion.

    Good
After his friends all go their separate ways, Joey leaves New York for Hollywood to pursue his acting career full time. His sister Gina buys him a nice apartment, and he finds a new roommate in his nephew Michael. Sorry, but almost every joke in this series is absolutely pointless. The only thing that keeps it afloat is the sensitivity of the bilaterally desperately needy relationship between the main characters. I suggest you enjoy the first five or so episodes for what they are and let your mind play around with the opportunities there can be to make something interesting. The real centerpiece of the series is its acting; two performances in particular stick out.

    Woops
This series stars Matt LeBlanc as Joey Tribbiani, in a spin off show from the hit series "Friends". While all the other characters from this classic sitcom (Phoebe, Rachel, Monica, Ross and Chandler) moved on to bigger and better things, Joey was still stuck saying "How you doing'?" for another year. Big, big mistake on Matt's part to do this show, he should have taken the risk and moved on to other films and TV, but instead he stuck to where he was comfortable, and stayed with Joey. All the jokes had been used before, and you could spot them coming a mile off. To the concerned viewer: you have ten whole series of Friends to watch, why move on to Joey? Do a Matt LeBlanc, and stick to what you are comfortable with.
  • Joey Tribianni is an awesome character from F.R.I.E.N.D.S. No doubt he got a show of his own. But the rest of the cast and story-line is quite weak. FRIENDS is one of the best comedy show of all time because all the six characters in that show were very strong, extremely humorous and they connected with us all the way.

Joey seems incomplete without Chandler. Their chemistry made FRIENDS great. We don't get to see any such chemistry in this show.

But anyways, if you are a fan of Joey Tribianni. Go watch this show. It has some of its memorable moments. And you might get to relive some memories from FRIENDS.

I really missed Joey Tribianni after FRIENDS, so this show was a treat for me. I hope you will enjoy it as well!
  • I did not expect another "Friends", but I did expect funnier dialogue. The script seems somewhat flat, and the so-called funny bits seem to elicit laughs of the forced variety. One reviewer commented that people didn't compare "Frasier" to "Cheers"; there really was no need. "Frasier" may not have had the same writers as "Cheers", but it was still fresh and witty. "Joey" does not boast the golden team of writers that "Friends" had, and perhaps that is where it's lacking. These writers aren't really digging for subtle or original humor- it's a rehash of just about every other sitcom that's been before. And I'm sorry, but that's not humorous- that's regurgitation.

Despite all the negative things I heard about the spin-off of the timeless show 'Friends', I recently watched it and I have to say it's not even close to be as bad as I thought it would. I enjoyed a lot watching it, I've always loved Joey! It's funny how people expect it to be another season of Friends and complain about the fact that the show makes few references to it. People need to understand this is a story based on Joey and it has nothing to do with Friends. If someone thinks otherwise it's obvious they're going to be disappointed.
  • The show started out okay. It wasn't Friends, but it was okay. Through the first season it actually got better. Then over the second season it went down.

The characters weren't as good as the gang in Friends. Friends was fun because the characters were all funny in unique ways (Pheobe's weirdness, Monica's OCD, Chandler's humor...). In Joey, Gina's the only one that's remotely close to the level the gang was on. And Joey's rarely the core of the humor in Friends. He's usually there just to show off some dumbness, his eating, and his luck with women. In my opinion, that's why putting him in the center of the play was a bad idea in the beginning. You can't be funny just by making mean jokes of people being stupid all the time. Also, it looks more sad than funny that Joey's 35 and still such a baby. Come on, Chandler became a good husband, Rachel became independent... why no change in Joey?

Also, the show mainly rides on some ridiculous plots for humor. Bobbie wasn't as fun as Estelle, and Bobbie's character can't be any more unreal, but Bobbie's actually one of the funnier characters in Joey. The character development is incredibly weak, the jokes usually just come from showing off how insane these people are. And they made a terrible decision with Jimmy. The actor (same one for Eddie, as in Chandler's crazy roommate) looks incredibly annoying by default, and made Jimmy's character extremely unlikable. I mean, this is like making Janice a regular in Friends. Sure, she's entertaining, but can you stand her if she's in every episode?

And I think that's when the show went down.

It was kinda sad watching Friends end. I always wondered how their lives would turn out to be, especially Joey's, given he's still single. But after seeing this crazy world life that looks like a Las Vegas fantasy, I kinda agree with the people who said that it's better if we don't continue the story of Friends. It's not gonna be the same.

Okay I didn't want to compare this show with friends when I just wrote this, but I can't help it... So if you just want to watch a comedy show, this is not a bad one, but don't expect this to be the 11th season of Friends.
  • Joey Tribbiani (Matt LeBlanc) leaves New York for Hollywood to pursue his acting career full time. His slutty sister Gina (Drea de Matteo) buys him a nice apartment, and he finds a new roommate in his 20-year old nephew rocket scientist Michael (Paulo Costanzo). Bobbie Morganstern (Jennifer Coolidge) is his agent. Alex Garrett (Andrea Anders) is their landlord and neighbor.

This was the first attempt by a cast member of 'Friends' at a TV series. And Matt LeBlanc was universally panned for it. Sadly, it was not without reason. Although it did sputter on for 2 full seasons. Matt was basically playing the same guy. Except in this one, he was the top dog rather one of six. The chemistry never truly flowed between the characters. And the laughs were fewer. It didn't have a chance when everybody was comparing it to 'Friends'.

    Review about the show Joey.

This is the first time I am writing a review for a sit-com. Guess most of it I owe it to Friends because Joey was my Favorite character on the show, Joey and Chandler together were hilarious and today when I look back and see almost all of them unemployed, A part of me dies inside. They did gave us a lot of memories especially Joey. I to this day think that the friends ended was almost perfect with just 1 flaw and that was Joey not having anyone in his life and Chandler and Monica moving into a countryside house and Ross and Rachel together(FINALLY), Pheobe already married to Mike.

Now in all this whom did Joey had???The answer is simple and that is nobody. Some part of it was answered by the show Joey where in Joey moves to LA to pursue his acting career. Makes a good friend in Alex. (Super cute). And his extended family in Micheal (Too Boring) and his sister Gina (she is smoking hot). And yes there's that agent Bobby also but I don't find her part very important though.

Joey as a show is good, Not Great ,It has its own moments of Joy and that feel good nostalgia but again It would be impractical for me to compare Joey with Friends. I'll try to be as impartial as I can be but some real disappointments that I have seen on the show are for 1 the set they use – An Awesome gallery(with a bath tub, very very cool, depicts the modern LA culture) but then Joey's apartment ,during the first 10 ten shows all I get to see is the living room and the open kitchen. This isn't cool. I am not comparing it to Friends now (where we got to see 2 living rooms, sometimes 3 with Ross apartment in the picture but moreover the bedrooms of Monica, Joey, Rachel, Chandler etc) but some other famous sit-coms like Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men and the recently concluded How I met Your Mother (also had glimpses of kitchen, Bar, Ted's bedroom, Barney's Apartment). All these shows display an entire house/apartment which makes the viewer believe that it is actually a day to day based sit-com and not a TV set with a couple of couches in a room and actors hanging out there . Another problem with Joey is that although Matt LeBlanc is at ease with his portrayal of Joey, All the others have a very little role to play in it ,have for eg Michael- He really needs to calm down from being the Geek he is, wasn't the whole point of him moving in Joey was to pick up girls and live his life independently . This is where the whole plot gets misguided. Now Alex ,her private life is hardly shown here , I mean not 1 scene about her life with her husband . Gina (super hot) and yes sparkling with her enthusiasm is one plus point on the show. The humor content hasn't been also up to the mark like after watching straight 10 episodes of season 1 ,I barely can recall 1 scene or 2 that had my heart laugh out, Now in Friends(Yes, I know I shouldn't compare the 2 but still) I remember the show when Joey had gone to an audition where he really had to rush to the washroom but the casting director/ actor din't let him go and joey gave the performance (LOL), Another instances involved where Joey and Chandler got the Chick and Duck, The one where Joey had his head stuck inside a Turkey and lots and lots of them. Even after writing so much criticism about the show I'd still continue to watch Joey Season 1 and will also download Season 2 of it.All this just for Matt Le Blanc. And last but definitely not the least I hope to see Joey say it to Alex- How You Doin'??

    Cheers

Good heart and smart heheheha. Joey works I like. Fresh style because USA 2004 and 5!
  • First off - this is NOT Friends, it will never BE Friends, it SHOULD never be Friends. These simple facts are probably also what most people have against Joey. I don't. I think it's 'Joeys' strength. Joey is a character we've come to love and respect during those past ten years, now that he's 'come into his own' a lot of the plot centers around him and only around him. This is of course the biggest change from that previous show, it is also absolutely necessary. For 'Joey' to work the character has to evolve, Joey himself has to mature and no longer only be the grown-up kid he has been. He is no longer the comic-relief guy who amazes us with his juvenile ways and amazing stupidity. He simply HAS to grow up. And grow up he will. To be honest, I too was skeptical after watching the pilot. But after I got over the facts that I already described in the first sentence of this comment, I just sat back and heartily laughed at the comedy displayed. Just remember these simple things - Michael isn't Ross. Alex isn't Monica, Gina isn't Rachel. Joey isn't Friends, Joey is Joey - and he's growing up. Be happy that you can laugh about it with him.
  • After the very popular show Friends ended it took only two months before the spin off Joey aired, but unfortunately it didn't have the success a la Frasier and only lasted two seasons.

I have a feeling a major problem was that it was so soon. Many fans just wanted Friends 2. I have watched it long time after the ending of Friends when all the wounds were healed, and yet I felt they could have made just a bit more Friends references. They actually did a few and it was great to see so much of Joey's Hugsy the Penguin, but at the same time it felt weird that he seemed to miss more the snow than his buddies.

Another thing that I think was an issue with such an early start was that the writers didn't have enough time to think of more fun and original ideas. I did laugh but many jokes seemed to fabricated and the main strength of the show at the start was that it was Joey. Which unfortunately isn't enough. There were some terrific episodes and some that totally fell flat, I also noticed quiet a few story lines that reminded me of specific Friends stories but were just not as good. And this is when it got cancelled.

Towards the end of the last season I was seeing something promising and it was actually disappointing to see the show end. This mainly came from them finally finding spots for the characters in the story and also bringing an absolutely perfect character: Jimmy portrayed by Adam Goldberg. He was only 9 episodes on the show but to me he was one of the best parts of the show and who could have carried it pretty far. He also gave a great addition to an already great character, Joey's sister Gina (Drea de Matteo). Besides hose two there is another character that i loved: Bobbie (Jennifer Coolidge). She was one of the secondary characters but one of the highlights for me on every episode. Very extraordinary and greatly performed.

Other than that the characters hey made were not all that great. Michael, while a good balance to the a little dumb Joey was pretty boring. Alex was absolutely bland. Not that they never had a fun line or story but for the most part I didn't care. Zack and Howard were absolutely useless.

So yes, it could have been better but they didn't give it enough time to create. And I must say if they had a Gina/Jimmy spin off with some Bobby I would have loved watching it.
  • Joey was a terrible sitcom: it took who was the goof-ball of the Friends clan and threw him into a whole new situation and relocated him from New York to LA. NBC were probably hoping that because Frasier was a spin-off from cheers, they'd been assuming that by repeating this method, lightening would strike twice for them... it didn't.

Though in regards to its flaws, where do I start? well, for one the jokes were lame and were in truth not funny and the writers seemed to recycle and rework any old friends material and incorporating it in the show;secondly, the characters were weak- you just couldn't really identify with them. In a good sitcom, there would usually be one characteristic trait that either makes them different, stand out from others, or of which there is something to say about each one of them. With Joey however, there was absolutely no connection, no spark, they had basically nothing of which we could say about them. Thirdly, the biggest mistake NBC made was in implying that Joey could make that transition from a so-called supporting character into a main one.

There was really no way that Matt Le Blanc's character- being a goofy, jokey person could really be regarded and perceived as a lead sitcom character. If that was the case, then joey would've developed into a slightly maturer character when he was on Friends alongside Monica, Rachel, Ross, chandler and to some extent the slightly 'hippy' Phoebe. But he didn't. Having said that, this sitcom could've been the ideal platform for the writers and creators to further explore and develop Joey's character- instead, what we have here is the same Joey Tribianni, who likes to joke about as he did on yep, Friends and of whom does not much else. And finally fourth, when NBC and the writers thought that because the Friends concept was so good, they thought it would work in this sitcom- big mistake because if you compare the other characters in Joey to Friends, characters such as Gina- Joey's sister for example, lacked,as i said earlier, personality and real depth to carry it off. Even though I wasn't a huge fan of Ross, Rachel and company.

I was surprised when this sitcom was renewed for a second season because Joey was a poorly scripted show, which failed to address its mistakes. Of course, certain people expected Joey to be a similar type of show to its predecessor, Friends. It certainly wasn't. NBC expected that ratings for this sitcom would be consistent and on par with Friends. It didn't.

Overall,Joey is a forgettable sitcom which is littered with an array of errors and a sheer lack of substance in character development. Hence, this is an example of how NOT to write a sitcom spin-off.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Joey was always the best character on Friends. First of all he was a struggling actor and that meant you could put him in almost any outrageous situation, eg. backstage intrigue (especially since he also worked on a soap opera), a stalker parody (remember Brooke Shields in her absolute best comedy performance) and dealing with a lot of showbiz phonies.

The series "Joey" continues that trend but it's not that because he has moved to LA that we will see him hobnobbing with Bruce Willis or Will Smith. Instead, the character Joey has now matured (but just enough that he doesn't lose his lovable goofball quality). He now tries to mentor his nephew (a geeky 20 year old with a weird mother fixation) and to support his sister through many ups and downs.

Although, the series was quickly canceled it was no worse than its predecessor "Friends". It was just that it wasn't "Friends" and no matter how hard you try you will eventually compare the two.

I thought the show was better than "Friends" because there wasn't spent so much time on sickening romance plots (except for the end of the run) and more on the showbiz aspect. But to be fair, there was an abundance of geek jokes and smothering mother jokes that are as old as sitcoms themselves to make up for it.
  • Shana Goldberg-Meehan is what is wrong with Hollywood. Her dad was "David Garry Goldberg" who created the Reagan Era Hit "Family Ties". So she never had to "Work her way up in Hollywood". Because her career was handed to her she was able to land great jobs that should have gone somebody else more talented.

SHe was given way too much credit for "Friends". All of her scripts were rumored to have been re-written by the real writers. When the show "Friends" came to an end the main creators of the show had nothing to do with "Joey". Shana Goldberg-Meehan help create the show and it was a creative and ratings disaster. Shana Goldberg- Meehan lack of talent help sink the show, Not only did she create it she was also the show runner.

Joey was a pointless spin-off and its characters had no depth. It lacked a main focus and the shows ratings were sinking every week. NBC gave this show a 2 year commitment. So Shana Goldberg-Meehan was replaced for the 2nd Season but the show was more focused but still just as average as any "Caroline in the City" episode.

Shana Goldberg-Meehan went on to create the ABC show "Better WIth You" and Shana Goldberg-Meehan created another loser. A show with bad lines and poorly developed characters.

She now is a creative consultant on "Speechless" and lets hope she is kept out of the writers room.
  • Well, its an irony that a spin-off series of one the greatest sitcoms in the world is inconsiderate. This show is a hidden gem. Like normal shows, this show also has some flaws and loopholes but that doesn't ruin our entertainment . Must watch.
  • I don't understand the hate for this show. Sure, it's not as good as 'Friends', but if 'Friends' is gold, then 'Joey' is silver.

It's not as good as other spin-offs such as 'Frasier' and 'The Simpsons', but it's still a great show to watch.

    I give this 8/10
  • By the time 'Friends' finally died, every character has been drained of every drop of potential. I always hated 'Friends' anyway but at least I could see why other people liked it & Chandler was sort of funny sometimes.

Fast forward a few years & some unimaginative TV exec decides to dig up the rotting corpse of the dead 'Friends' horse & give it another good whipping. Oh, & remove 5 of the characters too. Without his friends, Joey is totally lost. A 1 dimensional character is just about passable when surrounded by 5 other 1 dimensional characters to give variation. Unfortunately, no effort has been made to fill out the role & the whole sitcom relies on familiarity with Joey. Yes, I'm familiar with him & I hate him.

The only positive thing I can say is that it's better Than 'Hope & Faith'. ANYTHING is better than 'Hope & Faith'.... Tuberculosis for example. So 'Joey' is about on a par with Tuberculosis. Or maybe Cholera.
  • When you just make a show about just Joey, the expectations are pretty low. No one expected a spin off to be amazing. After Friends, Joey is more of a hangover show.

Its an average comedy. Nothing too special.

    Watch at your own interest.
  • "Story of Joey after the F.R.I.E.N.D.S event is a family drama comprised of 2 seasons. Matt leBlanc reprising his role as JOEY is as funny and cute as he was in F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Drea Dematteo portrayed the role of Joey's sister and she is total LIT and one of the highlight of the show. I've watched the show before I saw F.R.I.E.N.D.S so I liked which you might not agree with. Keep in mind that comparing this with F.R.I.E.N.D.S would be unfair because it has no ensemble cast like F.R.I.E.N.D.S despite of this the show touches your heart with all right reasons".
  • I have seen the first 20 episodes of Joey. Seriously, nothing great. In fact nothing great was expected so it's OK. But the thing is it's the only thing, for now at least, that a F.R.I.E.N.D.S fan can watch. The other members of friends are making sitcoms too, so until then we have Joey. Well, its jus 26 episodes so not a very long series, maybe it can be extended but no one should have any hopes. The characters are OK, sometimes enjoyable but the rest of the times, you can't make out what the audience is finding so dam funny. I recommend the show to all FRIEEDS fans especially to those of Joey, but not to those who are newcomers and not familiar with FRIENDS.
