Niecy Nash-Betts, who recently won an Emmy for her role on Netflix’s “Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story,” has signed on to host the Los Angeles portion of next month’s Writers Guild Awards. The 2024 event, which was pushed back in the wake of the Hollywood strikes, will take place on Saturday, April 14 at the Hollywood Palladium.
“A good writer is an actors’ greatest gift,” Nash-Betts said in a statement. Added L.A. awards exec producer Hugh Fink (“Saturday Night Live”): “Niecy Nash-Betts is the dream host for this year’s WGA Awards. Her brilliant performance in ‘Dahmer’ – as the courageous woman who helped take down a serial killer who ate his victims – is surprisingly a lot like negotiating with the AMPTP.”
Benn Fleishman of Avalon Harbor Entertainment is also a producer for this year’s WGA Awards in Los Angeles. Additional presenters scheduled to appear at this year’s L.

Niecy Nash was in bed late one Sunday evening earlier this year when she got a frantic call from her team of reps: “The Masked Singer” host Nick Cannon had tested positive for Covid-19 on the eve of production for Season 5. Would she be available to fill in?
“I was like, ‘you had me at hello,'” Nash tells Variety. “Of course, my immediate thought was, ‘Is Nick Cannon Ok?’ And after that I was like, I would love to. And then two days later, there I was.”
Now, as her time guest hosting “The Masked Singer” is likely winding down — Wednesday is the fifth episode of Season 5, which means Cannon’s return should be coming shortly — Nash says she had a blast. “It’s a really good time. I mean, it involves a lot of the things that I like: music, costumes, sequins, eyelashes and comedy. All of my favorite things.

“The Masked Singer” host Nick Cannon has tested positive for the Covid-19 coronavirus, which means he won’t be seen in at least the first few episodes of the hit Fox reality series’ fifth season. Instead, producers have tapped actress and host Niecy Nash to fill in.
Nash will take over as guest host as production begins this Thursday on Season 5 of “The Masked Singer,” and until Cannon is ready to get back to work. Cannon is currently in quarantine and resting, a rep for the star confirms exclusively to Variety. Fox expects Cannon to return to the series later in the season.
Season 5 of “The Masked Singer” is scheduled to premiere in March. Returning to the show as usual are panelists Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg, Nicole Scherzinger, Ken Jeong and Robin Thicke.

Few kids have their professional lives mapped out before they reach their preteens, but when a 5-year-old Niecy Nash saw Lola Falana in her “long black dress and eyelashes like butterflies,” she turned to her grandmother and said, “I want to be black, fabulous and on television.”
So four years later, when she spotted “a man she knew from TV” while visiting the Hollywood Walk of Fame with her father, she had no qualms about approaching him. That man was Ed Asner, and Nash yelled after him to remember her name, because one day it would be etched onto one of the stars she was standing on.
It took a few decades, but on July 11 Nash’s childhood prophecy comes true as she receives a star commemorating a career that has included such shows as “Reno 911!,” “Getting On” and her newest series, “Claws” on TNT.

In plays like “Stage Kiss” and “The Clean House,” Sarah Ruhl has established herself as a playwright capable of injecting the fantastical into the mundane, of bringing a kind of magic realism to kitchen-sink dramas. Her promising but underwritten new play, “For Peter Pan on Her 70th Birthday,” which opened Wednesday at Off Broadway’s Playwrights Horizons, starts out as a memory play. A 70-year-old woman named Ann (Kathleen Chalfant) recounts her experience playing Peter Pan on stage as a child in 1940s Davenport, Iowa — and meeting famed actress Mary Martin, who made the role famous. Yup, I guessed it several episodes back folks. Sabine was Level Six!
It's always amazing to me how much story and detailed information is crammed into each 10 episode season of this series. Killjoys Season 2 Episode 7 dropped several important bits like Khlyen being there at the start of it all and Double-Dutch's name.
I'm still not sure how everything ties together, but I'm dying to find out.
Well, the sexytime between Dutch and Alvis doesn't seem to be letting up any time soon. Sadly, we can't say the same for D'av and Sabine, but more on that in a bit.
Did the appearance of "Double-Dutch" freak you out as much as it did me? Hopefully that was just a bad dream and not a sign that Alvis' days are numbered. I really dig monkpants and his role on the series, so I'm hoping he sticks around. That said, I have a...

How much do we miss “Clean House”? A ton, people! The Hallmark “Home & Family” taping for Monday, April 13, was a blast and it reminds us all of the alchemy with a finely tuned cast and how their energy makes (or breaks) a great TV show. Each episode of “Clean House” on the Style network began with a short montage introducing the “makeover” family and domicile. Niecy Nash, guided family members through the process of letting go of things with the assistance of “Go-to-Guy,” handyman Matt Iseman, “Yard Sale Diva,” Trish Suhr and designer Mark Brunetz. The “Clean House” team […]...

One of the spring’s most enjoyable new comedies was Sarah Ruhl’s Stage Kiss, a big wet smooch on the lips to theatrical narcissism. Raucous and ribald, it fit uncertainly in the trajectory of an author better known for the quietly measured teaspoons of drama in works like The Clean House and Dead Man’s Cell Phone and In the Next Room (or The Vibrator Play). Turns out, Stage Kiss was a bit of a blip stylistically. Her new play, The Oldest Boy, at Lincoln Center Theater, finds Ruhl returning to (and thoughtfully extending) her familiar dramaturgy, which involves likable women muddling their way through oddball situations like metaphysical Lucys. Those outré plots are decoys, though: brightly colored attention-getters built to allow her real interests, which are somewhat vaporous and philosophical, to slip by undetected. Which is fine, lovely even, when the plots float. But sometimes a vibrator is only a vibrator.

It's hardly uncommon that the emotional tsunami of maternal love can inspire many mothers to believe their children are truly special beings, perhaps even divine. But in the imaginative mind of Sarah Ruhl that primal connection yields an extraordinary story. The Oldest Boy may not match the poetic complexity of the playwright's The Clean House, or the sociopsychological acuity of In the Next Room or The Vibrator Play, but this meditation on such intellectually unfashionable concepts as faith, destiny and spirituality is delicate and affecting. And it's impossible to imagine it receiving more ideal treatment than in Rebecca Taichman's exquisite production

“I have made a series of very bad decisions and I cannot make another one” was a line once spoken by Breaking Bad’s Walter White, but it couldn’t be less true of the actor who said it. The one and only Bryan Cranston — on an impeccable roll for the last few years — has just made his Broadway debut to ecstatic notices for his lived-in, charged Lyndon Baines Johnson in All the Way, and early pundits indicate he may be the man to beat at Tony time. (Though not so fast, he still has heavy-hitters like Denzel Washington, Michael C. Hall,...

Cinema, as Jean-Luc Godard wrote, is truth 24 times a second. Documentaries both prove and disprove the point; but the truth is their strongest weapon. Here, Guardian and Observer critics pick the 10 best

To best understand this 1929 silent documentary, one ought to know that its director, the exotically named "Dziga Vertov", was actually born David Abelevich Kaufman in 1896. Some say the name derives from the Russian word for spinning top, but the pseudonym is more likely an onomatopeic approximation of the sound made by the twin reels of film as the director ran them backwards and forwards through his flatbed editor. For Vertov, film was something physical, to be manipulated by man, and yet, paradoxically, he also saw it as a medium...

On Comedy Central's "Reno 911!" Niecy Nash did improvisation, and on Style Network's "Clean House," she did reality. In her new series, TLC's "Leave It to Niecy," she does a little bit of both.
As the star of a docu-sitcom that blends elements from the sitcom genre and nonscripted reality shows, Nash spearheads the melding of her own family -- children Dominic, Donielle and Dia and her mother, Miss Margaret -- with her new husband, electrical engineer Jay, and his son, Romallis.
TLC viewers met Nash in the two-hour "Niecy Nash's Wedding Bash," which aired last June, and the eight-episode, half-hour series, premiering Sunday, March 25, follows the family as it balances work, life and love.
"The only reason I did my wedding on television," Nash says, "was because I knew so many women who had gone through a divorce and were waiting until their children were grown in order...

Freelance journalist Dominic Patten is covering the trial for Deadline. After two weeks of testimony and more than a dozen witnesses including current and past presidents of both Hollywood Foreign Press Association and Dick Clark Productions, their court battle over TV rights to the Golden Globes is now in a holding pattern. At the core of the dispute is a 1993 amendment to Dcp’s longtime contract with the HFPA. The production company says the amendment grants them rights in perpetuity to the Golden Globes as long as the show is broadcast on NBC, which it has been since 1996. The HFPA says it does no such thing. When Dcp signed a $150 million deal with NBC in 2010 extending the network pact until 2018, HFPA took the production company to court. On Tuesday, Judge A. Howard Matz implored both parties to take the time before their lawyers begin closing arguments on Friday, February 10th...
