2012 saw the predominantly good, a couple bad and some occasional ugly bits of cinema. Everyone seemed to get a bit of their share in the sun. Looking back, the year at the theatres for the maximum part of it was positive, providing much indulgence to ardent cinegoers by its ample variety in scripts. Franchise mania continued, additional entrants to the otherwise familiar names in the 100–crore club, regional divide minimalized, smaller films made their own space, and Bollywood put the ‘happily-ever-after’ context to reality for majority of the industry! While few stuck to the rut, it was heartening to see others stepping out of their comfort zones, and developing newer alliances with an idea to experiment with fresh content. In this feature, we look back at episodes, moments, trends in the year that made up some welcome and some rather startling surprises

Rahul Bose and Arjun Mathur
Rahul Bose tells Chakpak what it took to kiss co-star Arjun Mathur in ‘I Am’
Rahul Bose has never been one to shy away from an onscreen kiss. From his smooch with Perizaad Zorabian in Mumbai Matinee (2003) to his lip-lock with Mallika Sherawat in Pyar Ke Side Effects (2006) to his most recent kiss with Arjun Mathur in I Am (2011).
Bose, who portrayed a gay character in India’s first gay film, BomGay (1996), said that kissing a man was not the toughest part of I Am. Bose played Jay in I Am Omar, one of four episodes that formed a part of director Onir?s film. ?I just stuck a girl?s face on his (Mathur’s) and kissed the hell out of him,? he said in an interview to Chakpak. So what was the toughest part of doing that role?

Perizaad Zorabian turned to acting as a profession only after she acquired an Mba. She worked in the TV series Hum Pardesi Ho Gaye, before her first break in director Nagesh Kukunoor’s Bollywood Calling. Jogger’s Park won her critical acclaim, and smaller roles in Mumbai Matinee, Morning Raga and Salaam-e-Ishq followed. After a hiatus of four years, Perizaad makes a comeback with the play Dinner With Friends, presented by Ballantine’s and directed by Feroz Khan. One word that describes you best?Passionate. One tune you can’t get out of your head?Eye of the Tiger, from the film Rocky. You get high on…Being loved by ...

For a total of 312 films from 64 different countries. Wow, I wish I could go. Of the remaining announcements in 3 different sections, the most intriguing would have to be Vincent Cassel playing legendary French gangster Jacques Mesrine in Public Enemy No. 1. It's listed as a "work-in-progress" so I guess that means what will be screened is not the final cut. Another I'm looking forward to is The Lucky Ones which stars one of my favorites, Tim Robbins. It's about some returning soldiers who go on a road trip across America. Check out the full list following.
