According to the DVD commentary, the creators made a deliberate effort to show camels in scenes set in Alexandria or elsewhere in Egypt, in order to make them look exotic compared to the scenes set in Rome. Camels, however, would be of no use in Ancient Alexandria, because it was built on a marshy island in the Nile delta and camels are poorly suited to walk over such soft, humid soil.
