Following Snoop Dogg’s acquisition of Death Row Records, and “false reports” regarding ownership of The Chronic, Dr. Dre still owns “100%” of the G-funk classic, his lawyer told Rolling Stone.
While it was initially reported that the masters of Death Row classics like Dr. Dre’s The Chronic and Tupac Shakur’s All Eyez on Me were not included when Snoop Dogg purchased the legendary West Coast label, comments that the rapper made in a recent Tidal interview suggested that he was in possession of The Chronic as part of the deal.

Exclusive: Producer Steve Whitney and his company Tsw Films have purchased Suge Knight’s life rights with plans to develop a biopic on the infamous music mogul, bringing Nick Cassavetes and Anthony Thorne aboard to write the script.
The former music exec born Marion Hugh “Suge” Knight Jr. co-founded the iconic label Death Row Records in 1991 and is credited with bringing the subgenre of gangsta rap into the mainstream. Artists signed to the label included Dr. Dre, Snoop Dog and Tupac Shakur—and those three acts alone changed the face of hip hop with the release of the groundbreaking albums The Chronic, Doggystyle and All Eyez on Me. Knight’s label had enormous success with over 50 artists and profits of over $100 million a year, but fell into bankruptcy after the departure of Dr. Dre and Snoop Dog, the murder of Tupac and the 2018 incarceration of Knight on charges of voluntary manslaughter.

After Spider-Man’s black suit was revealed to be an alien symbiote, I lost all interest. I have never cared about Venom or Carnage or their symbiote children. The viciousness and exaggerated fangs and tongue are relics of the 1990s that I wish would just go away.
I was not at all surprised Sony went ahead with a Venom movie, but what surprised me was that it received not only good word of mouth but enough box office to receive a sequel. Venom: Let there Be Carnage has the benefit of being mercifully short. As a buddy movie, with the buddies sharing one body, it has some nice lightweight moments that Eddie Brock/Venom (Tom Hardy) plays well enough.
But, when Brock interviews Cletus Kasady (Woody Harrelson) on Death Row, things turn decidedly darker as the red-hued symbiote emerges. There’s mayhem and blood everywhere, but not much sympathy for the newer,...

Gotta love that title! Producer Walter Mirisch’s small-scale Monogram noir was once assumed lost, but now it’s making its home video debut on Blu-ray. A luckless young entertainer finds himself neck deep in murder trouble, when an unbreakable string of circumstantial evidence points directly at him. As the date of his execution nears, the only way his desperate wife can help him is to encourage the detective on the case to think he has a chance with her. Taken from a Cornell Woolrich story, the show tries hard despite its low budget — we can almost feel Mirisch behind the scenes, making sure the picture has heart and sincerity.

Nick Broomfield’s new documentary is the latest film to investigate the fatal east coast/west coast beef, but are the retellings muddying the waters?
Rumour has it Marion “Suge” Knight, fearsome supremo of Death Row records, once said Tupac Shakur was “worth more dead than alive”. Sadly he may have been right. We are coming up to the 25th anniversary of the killing of Shakur, likewise for Biggie Smalls, killed less than a year later. And in the intervening decades, their inextricably linked deaths and the east coast/west coast beef that led to them have been cemented into the foundations of hip-hop mythology, especially by the movies.

Who shot Christopher Wallace, aka Biggie Smalls? It’s crazy to think that a Hollywood movie can solve a homicide the Los Angeles Police Department couldn’t crack. But conspiracy-minded “City of Lies” — which opens 24 years and 10 days after the rap legend’s murder on March 9, 1997 — suggests that the Notorious B.I.G.’s death isn’t unsolved at all, but a cover-up of epic proportions.
According to buck-the-system screenwriter Christian Contreras (who cooks up lines like “There’s no such thing as law. There’s never been one that can overcome man’s nature”), the LAPD had a pretty good idea of who did it and deliberately chose to let the case go cold. That’s a bombshell if true and downright irresponsible if not — and not this critic’s place to speculate as to which — although one thing is certain: Such claims should make for a far more...

Four decades in, hip-hop is not just a music genre, but a microcosm of the nation. At its core, the genre embodies the concept of the American dream — to transcend one’s environment in search of a better life — and with that comes its own challenges. FX’s latest documentary series, “Hip Hop Uncovered” (also streaming on Hulu), explores the origins of rap and how its maturation has affected the communities that birthed it, as well as the country at large.
Produced by Malcolm Spellman and directed by Rashidi Natara Harper, the two pull back the curtain on some of hip-hop’s unsung heroes and shine a line on those who have been working behind the scenes since its inception. Following rap originators Deb, Big U, Trick Trick, Haitian Jack, and Bimmy among others, it offers a unique perspective at how hip-hop and its relation to the streets has changed through the years.

Kim Kardashian says she had a tearful conversation with convicted murderer Brandon Bernard the same day he was set to be executed for killing two people when he was 18. The 40-year-old reality star has in recent weeks joined a social media push to convince President Donald Trump to commute the sentence of the prisoner, who has been on Death Row for 20 years, and stop him from undergoing what is scheduled to be the ninth planned execution by the federal government this year. Bernard, 40, was scheduled to die by lethal injection on the evening of Thursday, Dec. 10. "Just spoke to Brandon for what will likely be the last time," Kardashian tweeted at 5:03 p.m....

Ever since the time jump, there's been an endless stream of people looking for revenge.
JJ tried to kill Kristen, Eve tried to brainwash Ben, Melinda is engaging in vengeful prosecution, Vincent kidnapped Ciara, and on Days of Our Lives during the week of 10-19-20 Ben plotted to kill Vincent.
This plot device is so overused that some of the newer scenes feel like cut and paste scripts of previous stories.
Take the Ben-with-a-gun story, for example.
This one contained elements from two previous stories.
An out-of-his-mind-with-grief JJ stole a gun, tracked down Kristen, and threatened her life to get revenge for Haley's death -- which is exactly what Ben was planning to do to Vincent to get revenge for Ciara's.
And a vengeful Eve got a ghostly visit from her departed daughter Paige, who wanted her to stop seeking vengeance, just like Ben got one from Ciara for the same reason.

We might just have found the worst film of the year already. Mark checks out Old Dogs as it arrives in the UK. Return to sender?
Old Dogs has finally limped to UK screens after being delayed from June last year, with the central conceit that a gorilla will embrace Seth Green at some point, as shown in every trailer and on every poster.
Yeah, you've seen those posters on bus stops and at the cinema: John Travolta and Robin Williams standing side by side looking befuddled behind a terrified Seth Green, who's being embraced by said gorilla.
The film arrives here at the same time as the DVD and Blu-ray release over in America, where audiences didn't really take to the film despite having Seth Green being embraced by a gorilla. Apparently, the very sight of Seth Green being embraced by a gorilla wasn't quite enough to draw in the punters,...

TORONTO -- A low-key crime thriller navigating the path to moral redemption taken by an ethically challenged lawyer, Return to Sender marks a return to form for Pelle the Conqueror director Bille August, whose more recent films, including Smilla's Sense of Snow and the 1998 version of Les Miserables had problems finding their center.
While very deliberately paced, the picture re mains compelling courtesy of a script by Neal Purvis and Robert Wade that, for the most part, chooses not to connect the usual dots -- as well as nicely modulated performances by Aidan Quinn and Connie Nielsen.
It may lack the commercial drive of a John Grisham vehicle, but Return to Sender could still carve out a modest theatrical niche with the right distributor.
Quinn has landed one of his more complex roles as Frank Nitzche, a defense lawyer on a serious losing streak. He's lost his last three capital cases, with his last client going to the electric chair.
Broke and cynical, he has started up a lucrative little side business by corresponding with death row convicts and selling their letters to the highest bidders.
But when his biggest score yet -- a woman (Nielsen) awaiting execution after being found guilty in the kidnap and murder of a young child -- has stopped writing to him, Nitzche heads to Oklahoma to pay her a jail visit.
At first, their encounters have a predictable cat-and-mouse dynamic, but soon something deeper and more interesting develops between them, leading to a major crisis of conscience for Frank as he begins to question her guilty verdict.
August runs a tightly controlled ship here, if perhaps a little too controlled, especially during the film's expositional first half-hour, which occasionally takes on the visual equivalent of a Southern drawl.
Once the story clicks into gear, however, the level of involvement remains relatively high.
The subtle mood shifts give Quinn and Nielsen plenty to play with, while Kelly Preston, as the lawyer fighting a losing battle to exonerate her client, Sara-Marie Maltha, as Nielsen's blind sister, and Timothy Daly, as Maltha's sight-impaired husband, round out the well-chosen cast.
