Still going strong after 26 years, "Family Guy" has rightfully earned its place in primetime animated comedy, just like those folks from Springfield and the profane kids from "South Park." With such a lengthy time on air, though, the show has adapted to the times with its subject matter, includng the voice cast that helped bring its most loved and controversial characters to life. For example, in the case of Quahog's mayor, the grumbling, iconically mustached actor Sam Elliott took to office voicing Mayor Wild West. While it's undoubtedly on brand for "Family Guy" to get a beloved hero like Elliott on board, the casting came after the passing of Quahog's previous fictional mayor, Adam West.
The one-of-a-kind actor and brilliant Batman played himself on the show since he debuted in season 2 in 2000. Reaching impressive levels of kookiness, Mayor West was often better than a throwaway gag, frequently popping in with...

Four seasons after "Family Guy" started, Seth MacFarlane and the rest of the creative team behind the Griffins' hilarious world decided to launch another series with "American Dad." The show features a slightly more intelligent father figure, Stan Smith (but just barely), who, like "Family Guy" patriarch Peter Griffin, is voiced by MacFarlane himself. With so many overlapping creative aspects, such as the voice actors, edgy comedy, and distinctive animation style, it's understandable if you've ever wondered whether "American Dad" and "Family Guy" exist within the same universe. Well, it turns out they do a little.
Debuting in 2005, "American Dad" occasionally winked at the audience, making fragile connections to MacFarlane's other beloved animated series early on. Characters from "Family Guy" and "American Dad" would also cross over into one another's series via cameos, most notably in the "Family Guy" parodies of "Star Wars" and one of the show's best episodes,...

When Adult Swim announced a new series executive produced by “King of the Hill” creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels, fans would be forgiven for expecting a sharp yet sweet comedy. That is not what “Common Side Effects” is. Instead what premiered is difficult to explain, a series that serves as a tense conspiracy thriller as much as it is a bone dry comedy about ordinary people sucked into a saga that’s grander than they ever imagined.
In fact, “Common Side Effects” is a show so unique and unexpected, it confused the series’ original home at Amazon, which purchased the show in 2019. “We turned some scripts in, and they didn’t quite get it,” series co-creator Steve Hely told TheWrap.
It wasn’t until fellow co-creator Joseph Bennett (“Scavengers Reign”) made a short animation of the project that the duo was able to find other buyers. They eventually settled on Warner Bros. Discovery,...

The Big Bang Theory finished 2024 as the year’s “most-binged title” in streaming, according to a new report from Nielsen.
The sitcom averaged 265.5 episodes per viewer on Max, the measurement firm said, or 29.1 billion minutes of total viewing. The long-running former CBS series has 281 total episodes available for streaming.
Coming in at No. 7 overall among this year’s top streaming titles, Big Bang saw 58% of its watch time accounted for by adults 18 to 49.
The “average episodes per viewer” stat refers to the amount of time (with episodes lasting at least 20 minutes each) spent viewing the show. It does not indicate the number of unique episodes seen by each viewer.
Nielsen said it compiled the “most-binged” ranking by evaluating streaming titles with libraries of at least 50 episodes. It counted only the series whose viewers had spent at least one episode’s worth of time (20 minutes) with the show.

Star Trek: Voyager debuted 30 years ago this month, and it’s a kick to look back at the show’s earliest days. For example, the Voyager cast are the old-timers now, as Enterprise, Discovery, Strange New Worlds, Prodigy, Lower Decks, several feature films, and now Section 31 have all followed. But, when Voyager started, “typecasting” was still very much a thing, the notion being that acting in a Star Trek production could lead to trouble landing subsequent roles after a series ended because the public and entertainment industry so strongly associated an actor with their Star Trek role. More than just about anyone other than Patrick Stewart, Voyager star Kate Mulgrew has avoided that fate.
“This is such a great job and, for me, Janeway is such a great role that even if a stigma were attached to it later on, that would just be tough luck," Mulgrew told me in...

Seth MacFarlane is undeniably a force to be reckoned with in Hollywood, particularly in the TV space. As the creator of long-running shows such as "Family Guy" and "American Dad," his creations are now fixtures of the pop culture landscape. But even heavy-hitters miss every once in a while. For MacFarlane, his biggest miss to date came in 2013 when Fox picked up his live-action multi-camera sitcom "Dads" to air. Riding high at arguably the biggest moment in his career, the network seemed to think it couldn't lose. What it wound up with was an unrivaled critical misfire.
How bad was the response to "Dads," exactly? Amazingly enough, it ranks as the worst-reviewed sitcom on Metacritic with a dreadful 15 "Metascore." It should be noted that the site only counts titles with seven or more reviews. Setting aside any technicalities, "Dads" is...

Christmas week brought a bounty of viewing to streaming platforms, with eight titles crossing the billion-minute mark in Nielsen’s streaming ratings. Netflix’s Squid Game, however, stood well apart from the pack.

Seth MacFarlane and the Family Guy staff just struck a brutal blow to The Simpsons with a bit of scheduling “plagiarismo.”
This February will mark an historic moment for Fox and its Sunday night animation block when, for the first time in more than three decades, The Simpsons will not lead off the lineup of adult animated comedies that owe their very existence to Matt Groening and his team. The Simpsons has long been the cornerstone of Fox and its Animation Domination schedule where shows like American Dad! first found their footing, but The Simpsons now finds itself a step behind the competition as Family Guy slides into first place for the month of February while The Simpsons will have to wait until March to return to Season 36, at which time it will reclaim the first slot from Family Guy.

The Traitors is becoming more than just a cult favorite.
The competition series opened its third season with its largest viewing numbers to date: It registered 499 million minutes of viewing on Peacock for the week of Jan. 6-12, based on preliminary Nielsen streaming figures. Season three premiered on Jan. 9. (Nielsen’s streaming figures include all episodes of a show, so some of that time came from prior seasons.)
That’s a series high for The Traitors, whose previous best showing in Nielsen’s streaming ratings was 402 million minutes the week after its season two premiere in January 2024. Full streaming ratings for Jan. 6-12 from Nielsen will be released in a few weeks, per the ratings service’s agreement with streaming platforms.

In case it wasn't obvious from his sci-fi comedy show "The Orville," TV guru Seth MacFarlane is a huge, huge Trekkie. "The Orville," in its construct, lighting, and character types, very much resembles "Star Trek: The Next Generation," just with a few crass jokes and flippant commentary added throughout. MacFarlane also once presented William Shatner, in character as Captain Kirk, on a big screen at the Academy Awards. Some might even know about the "Star Trek" fan film that MacFarlane made back in high school, wherein he cast himself as Captain Kirk.
His Trekkie credentials don't end there. On one of the "Next Generation" Blu-rays, MacFarlane hosted a commentary track for the episode "Cause and Effect," talking to the episode's writer, Brannon Braga. He was also in the documentary "Trek Nation," and has included myriad "Star Trek" references in his animated sitcoms "Family Guy," "American Dad!," and "The Cleveland Show.

Although "The Big Bang Theory" is relatively mild and family-friendly, at least compared to its contemporaries like "How I Met Your Mother" or "Modern Family," it did still regularly delve into sexual humor. Howard's always got some skeevy joke to tell and there are no shortage of jokes about Penny's sex life. With Sheldon (Jim Parsons), however, the show was borderline G-rated; the character had seemingly zero interest in sex for the first few seasons, and even by the end of the show, the evidence of his libido was still scant. The introduction of Amy (Mayim Bialik) in the season 3 finale helped clarify him as heterosexual, though that label for Sheldon's sexuality will always have a giant asterisk next to it.

‘Twas the season to be thrilled with action. As people settled in and got cozy with their kith and kin this past Christmas, sometimes watching classics like Home Alone, A Christmas Story and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation just isn’t enough. Many viewers checked out some newer movies that incorporated action with their holiday theme. The Hollywood Reporter reveals that Dwayne Johnson’s Red One on Prime Video became a big hit in homes after its brief theatrical run that grossed $186 million globally. His Santa action flick would be followed by Netflix’s Carry-On, which stars Taron Edgerton as a Tsa agent working on Christmas Eve when he’s faced with a terrorist plot.
Red One faced much criticism for its content, but the newest live-action film from megastar Dwayne Johnson topped the streaming charts in December with 2.1 billion minutes of viewing. Meanwhile, while finishing in second overall, Carry-On was...

Seth MacFarlane is now (and perhaps always will be) best known as the man behind his massive animated hit shows "Family Guy" and "American Dad." MacFarlane's creations now rival the likes of "The Simpsons" and "South Park" in terms of longevity and staying power in pop culture. But MacFarlane is more than that, as evidenced by his live-action love letter to "Star Trek" aka "The Orville."
The series, which as of this writing has run for a total of three seasons, premiered on Fox in 2017. "The Orville" later moved to Hulu for its third season, which arguably changed the show for the better but that's another issue entirely. During the show's second season when it was still on Fox, it actually featured a cameo from none other than action maestro Bruce Willis. That said, viewers would be forgiven for not noticing him.

"Fantasy Island," Gene Levitt's ABC series that ran from 1977 to 1984, had a simple enough premise for it to be contained entirely within the show's title. An island where people come to live out their fantasies was enough of an idea to spawn two made-for-tv movies and seven seasons of fantasy drama, anchored by the great Ricardo Montalbán, who played the mysterious and distinguished Mr. Roarke. Roarke hosted the island's many guests and oversaw their fantasies coming to life, accompanied initially by his assistant Tattoo (Hervé Villechaize).
"Fantasy Island" became popular during its seven years on the air, and Tattoo's catchphrase "The plane, the plane," which he delivered at the top of every episode, was absorbed into the cultural lexicon. The show's popularity hasn't endured quite as well as some other series from the era, though, which is probably partly why Blumhouse's terrible horror getaway version of "Fantasy Island" failed...

The week of Nov. 18-24 was a good one to premiere a streaming show with “man” in the title.
Netflix’s A Man on the Inside and Paramount+’s Landman both ranked among the top five original streaming series in their first week on the charts. A Man on the Inside, starring Ted Danson as a widower who goes undercover in a retirement community working for a private investigator, drew 880 million minutes of viewing for the week. That’s either the second- or third-best debut for a streaming comedy in 2024, depending on whether you classify The Bear (1.23 billion minutes for the week of its season three premiere) as one. (Nobody Wants This had just over a billion minutes for its first week.)

Believe it or not, we’ve been celebrating Christmas by watching Elf for more than 20 years now!
Released in 2003, the movie became an instant holiday classic and introduced fans to Will Ferrell‘s spirited Buddy the Elf and his iconic lines – think “The best way to spread Christmas cheer is singing loud for all to hear” and “Buddy the elf, what’s your favorite color.”
It also served as an introduction to Daniel Tay, who played Buddy’s half-brother Michael Hobbs in the movie.
At the time, Daniel was 11 and had one acting credit to his name, a role in American Splendor, which also premiered in 2003. He was a Hollywood newcomer who caught lightning in a bottle with his second movie.
However, Elf remains his biggest role to date, and we haven’t seen Daniel in any recent blockbusters.
