Maggie Peyton, the new owner of Herbie, Number 53, the free-wheelin' Volkswagen bug with a mind of its own, puts the car through its paces on the road to becoming a NASCAR competitor.
The stock car, in which Maggie Peyton (Lindsay Lohan) sits at Crazy Dave's, has the number "86" on it. Michael Keaton, who voiced Chick Hicks in Cars (2006), also had the number "86".
I didn't do that. It was the car.
Maggie Peyton: His name is Herbie.
Crash: That's a ridiculous na...
When Maggie loses hope during the big race after getting boxed in by the other cars, we see her team bow their heads. The movie then immediately cuts to a shot of her in the car saying, "I'm getting killed out here. I can't shake them." The very next shot is of her dad with a headset on standing among the team (in between Ray Peyton Jr. and Kevin). He wasn't standing with them when they bowed their heads three seconds earlier and there wasn't enough time for him to have walked up, put the headset on, and stand there so calmly.
The opening credits is a tribute to Herbie's career, with clips from all his previous movie, excluding to his "Wonderful World of Disney" film, leading up to where he is now in the events of the film.
