At the beginning of the game, Pitfall Harry mentions a fellow explorer named Forrestal who went looking for a Chacopayan idol in the Peruvian jungle. This is a direct reference to Indiana Jones and the Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981), where Indiana Jones mentions a fellow explorer named Forrestal who was trying to recover the Chacopayan idol he is after in Peru. The game also makes several references to "that Jones guy."

At one point, Pitfall Harry mentions the professor he mentored under, whose name is David Crane. David Crane designed the original Pitfall! (1982) and its sequel, Pitfall II: Lost Caverns (1984).

This game finally explains how Quickclaw is able to speak. As a character, Quickclaw was first introduced in the animated program Saturday Supercade (1983) during the "Pitfall!" segment. In that program, he was a talking, cowardly mountain lion with a patch over one eye. In this game, he's a talking jaguar who explains how he acquired the ability of human speech.
