Boston Legal is a spin-off of the long-running David E. Kelley series The Practice (1997), following the exploits of former Practice character Alan Shore (James Spader) at the legal firm of Crane, Poole, and Schmidt.
During the series, whenever Denny Crane (William Shatner) opens his cell phone it makes the same sound effect as the communicators from the original Star Trek series in which he played the role of Captain James T. Kirk.
Sorry I'm late, Judge, I'll make this quick...
Alan Shore: And subtle!
Judge Harry Hingham: Who the Hell are you?
Al Sharpton: ... The image of Santa Claus has been crafted for hundreds, and hundreds, and hundreds of years. We're supposed to be in a different day. Give the world a black Santa ...
In several episodes when Denny and Alan are looking to join (and actually do join) a branch of the military, they choose the Coast Guard Auxillary, to which the show mistakenly refers to as "the Auxilliary Coast Guard".
