Boston Legal is a spin-off of the long-running David E. Kelley series The Practice (1997), following the exploits of former Practice character Alan Shore (James Spader) at the legal firm of Crane, Poole, and Schmidt.
Nearly all episodes (except season two, episode twenty-six, "Spring Fever", and several others in the first season) end with Denny and Alan sitting on the balcony, having a drink, smoking a cigar, and discussing the events of the episode.
Judge Harry Hingham:
A ho-mo-sexual? That's where we're at now? Santa Clauses being played by ho-mo-sexuals?
Alan Shore: I believe "homosexual" is one word, judge. But to avoid confusion, let's say "gay".
In several episodes when Denny and Alan are looking to join (and actually do join) a branch of the military, they choose the Coast Guard Auxillary, to which the show mistakenly refers to as "the Auxilliary Coast Guard".
