PBS has “indefinitely” suspended Tavis Smiley’s talk show program after sexual misconduct allegations against the host. “Effective today, PBS has indefinitely suspended distribution of ‘Tavis Smiley,’ produced by TS Media, an independent production company,” a PBS spokesperson told TheWrap. “PBS engaged an outside law firm to conduct an investigation immediately after learning of troubling allegations regarding Mr. Smiley. This investigation included interviews with witnesses as well as with Mr. Smiley. The inquiry uncovered multiple, credible allegations of conduct that is inconsistent with the values and standards of PBS, and the totality of this information led to today’s decision.

The film world was deeply saddened when news broke today that Oscar-winning “The Silence of the Lambs” director Jonathan Demme had died in New York at the age of 73. Demme was a brilliant and versatile auteur, traversing genres with rarely a misfire. He is remembered by those who worked with him, and those whom his work inspired.
Tom Hanks, who won an Oscar for his portrayal of a lawyer dying of AIDS in Demme’s “Philadelphia,” wrote: “Jonathan taught us how big a heart a person can have, and how it will guide how we live and what we do for a living. He’s one of the most gentle and humble hunks in the industry, and when Benedict Cumberbatch misspoke during his recent interview with Tavis Smiley he immediately issued an apology.
The “Sherlock” actor mistakenly referred to black actors as “colored” while discussing the way that UK films are way behind American movies with regard to hiring non-white talent- “In all seriousness, I know what you’re saying. I think as far as colored actors go, it gets really difficult in the U.K., and I think a lot of my friends have had more opportunities here [in America] than in the U.K. and that’s something that needs to change.”
Following Cumberbatch’s sentiments, a rep from Show Racism the Red Card declared, “Benedict Cumberbatch has highlighted a very important issue within the entertainment industry and within society. In doing so, he has also inadvertently highlighted the issue of appropriate terminology and the evolution of language.

Owning up to his mistake. Benedict Cumberbatch issued a statement on Monday, Jan. 26, to apologize for using a controversial term. In a cringe-worthy moment, the Oscar-nominated British actor, 38, referred to his black colleagues as "colored actors" in an interview with Tavis Smiley on PBS last week. While he was speaking about the racial inequality and the insufficient representation of diversity in the UK, many took issue with Cumberbatch's use of the term "colored." Benedict Cumberbatch apologized on Monday for his use of the term "colored" when referring to non-white actors during an interview last week.
"I offer my sincere apologies," Cumberbatch said in a statement issued to People. "I make no excuse for my being an idiot and know the damage is done."
Cumberbatch might be one of the most beloved actors in Hollywood today, but that doesn't mean he's immune to occasionally sticking his foot in his mouth.

Well, Benedict Cumberbatch has had better days. The Imitation Game star smartly pronounced himself an "idiot" today after using the word "colored" during a recent conversation about diversity in Hollywood, a hot-button issue of late after the Academy failed to nominate any performances given by non-white actors this year for an Oscar, the most talked-about snub being Selma star David Oyelowo. During an appearance on PBS' Tavis Smiley last week, Cumberbatch reportedly said that "as far as colored actors go," there were more opportunities in the United States than there were in his native Britain. Um...hmm. Doesn't really sound like the classically trained thesp,...

Benedict Cumberbatch has apologised for referring to black actors as "coloured".
Speaking on PBS talk show Tavis Smiley today (January 26), Cumberbatch used the term while talking about diverse casting in Hollywood.
He said: "I think as far as coloured actors go, it gets really different in the UK, and a lot of my friends have had more opportunities here [in the Us] than in the UK, and that's something that needs to change.
"Something's gone wrong, we're not representative enough in our culture of different races and that really does need to step up a pace."
Following the interview, Cumberbatch was praised for the sentiment of his argument, but also criticised for using the outdated phrase.
In a statement, the Oscar nominee said: "I'm devastated to have caused offence by using this outmoded terminology. I offer my sincere apologies.
"I make no excuse for my being an idiot and know the damage is done.

Though the Screen Actors Guild awards made history Sunday by bestowing the two major TV acting honors to women of color for the first time since the Guild began its ceremony, the 2015 awards show season has been criticized for inadequately recognizing people of color. Despite this, Benedict Cumberbatch, who's been widely lauded for his portrayal of British computer scientist Alan Turing in The Imitation Game, still thinks the United States is ahead of the United Kingdom when it comes to job opportunities for black actors and actresses. "I think as far as colored actors go it gets really different in the U.

A Chris Rock interview is a lot like a Chris Rock stand-up special, bouncing from topic to topic, hitting hard truths laced with humor. What may be a nightmare scenario for publicists makes for great reading. In a new and lengthy interview with New York Magazine, writer-at-large and "Veep" producer Frank Rich inputs topics into conversation like the comedian-turned-director is a search engine. Enter "Obama," "Bill Cosby," or "censorship" into Chris Rock Google and out pops every thought on his mind. Tackling politics, his stand-up career, and the state of comedy in 2014, Rich’s interview eventually gets to the reason that they’re together in a room at this very moment: "Top Five." Earlier this Fall, Toronto Film Festival audiences went bananas for Rock’s jazzy, star-studded dramedy. Written, directed, and starring the comedian, "Top Five" rings autobiographical, following a comedian ready to hang up his jokey hat in favor of a "serious" movie career.

Stepping out for some media duties, Kristen Stewart paid a visit to “Tavis Smiley” on Monday night (October 20).
During her conversation, the “Snow White and the Huntsman” starlet plugged her new movie “Camp X-Ray” and highlighted the way the story brings out a modern day dilemma.
Kristen explained, “It’s very coincidentally timed. We’re lucky that it’s coming out at the time that it is. It’s a political subject that is so human… it’s easy to forget that there are people walking that line right now.”
“Not to sound so self-important, but this movie was an exciting prospect because it was a bit of a reminder,” Stewart added.
Previously, Kristen told USA Today that she’s in a great place career-wise now that “Twilight” is over. “I really have no apprehension about anything, which is great… I’m super happy and challenged and inspired and relaxed.
