When an old enemy, the Cylons, resurface and obliterate the 12 colonies, the crew of the aged Galactica protect a small civilian fleet - the last of humanity - as they journey toward the fabled 13th colony, Earth.
In the original Battlestar Galactica (1978), Viper weapons fire was red lasers and the Cylon Raiders fired blue lasers. In this version, both ships fire actual bullets. However, both sides fire the correct color of bullets.

Despite the fleet population being 50,000 people, the number on President Roslin's "White Board" is updated to only reflect changes in military/ govt personnel, but not births & deaths of the civilian population at large. Actually, this is not true and Roslin is seen adding the birth of a new born baby in an early episode. Additionally, the 10,000 people lost on New Caprica were mostly civilians.
The second season added the line "47,875 survivors in search of a home called Earth" in the opening sequence starting with Episode #2.1 "Scattered" and decremented it in every subsequent episode based on how many characters were killed off in the previous episode (or occasionally, as when the Pegasus returned, increasing it when the population increases).
