When receiving the top award from the Director's Guild of America for this film, Martin Scorsese said that this "is the first movie I have ever done with a plot."
There is no need to remind you that if you don't find that cheese eating rat bastard in your department... it won't be me who suffers for it.
Colin Sullivan: What I be any good at my job if I didn't fucking already know that?
Frank Costello: Just get him and smoke him the fuck out...
When Colin is telling Madolyn "I cannot allow you to jeopardize an ongoing investigation," he lightly puts his hands around her neck and face. When the shot changes, and he continues with "Or your life" his hands are back, and he reaches for her face again.
The title doesn't appear on screen until nearly 20 minutes into the movie.
In India, the film was given an A (adults only) certificate after the visual of Frank Costello holding a dildo was deleted. This change is visible in the Hindi dubbed VCD which shows a slight frame jump.
