When Lonergan and his assorted cohorts went to get their relatives back from the aliens, they attacked the spaceship by risking life and limb climbing up it to plant explosives, then endured the resultant attacks of the furious aliens who sprung from the ship. During the battle, Lonergan and Ella decided to try another tack, and rode down the canyon to enter a cave entrance that took them to the relatives and subsequently allowed Ella to access the spaceship. It would have been more sensible if they had done this in the first place, rather than blowing up part of the craft (which despite massive damage appeared to have no effect on its ability to re-launch later), poking the hornet's nest, and getting half the men horribly killed.
