The survivors of a plane crash are forced to work together in order to survive on a seemingly deserted tropical island.
In France, it is known as "Lost: Les Disparus". The additional French tag is due to a governmental ruling that imposes the use of French in all titles. "Les disparus" literally translates to "the missing" but 'disparus' means; gone, missing, vanished, lost, extinct, dead or departed. Depending on context.
James 'Sawyer' Ford:

James "Sawyer" Ford is a career con man with an extensive criminal record, which is covered throughout the series. However, everybody except New Zealanders must get a visa to travel to Australia, and Sawyer never would have been approved. The "character requirement" prevents people with substantial criminal records or known criminal associations from entering Australia.
The strange opening credits were designed by J.J. Abrams on his laptop in black and white as an homage to The Twilight Zone.
