Some people might have forgotten that Mike O’Malley, who played Kurt Hummel’s dad and made you cry with his fatherly talks during six seasons of Glee, used to be a Nickelodeon game show host.
“I took the job very seriously,” O’Malley tells Et about hosting the ‘90s sports competition series Guts, now celebrating its 25th anniversary. O’Malley, 50, was 24 years old when he landed the job. “I looked at the part like I was playing the role of an older brother. Like a cool camp counselor. I loved working with the kids.”
Each episode filmed on Stage 21 at Universal Studios Florida featured three teenage athletes competing against each other in four "extreme" versions of athletic events. In the final round, they raced up a “mountain” called the Aggro Crag, later renamed to Mega Crag. The show aired on Nickelodeon during a tween programming block that also included Legends of the Hidden Temple and Nick...

Get the Picture: Slaboshpitsky’s Excellent, Memorably Pronounced Debut
In a sea of derivative cinematic components, wholly original ideas seem few and far between. In a move that recalls the style of silent cinema engagement (once viewed as a detriment to the possibilities of cinematic communication), Ukrainian director Miroslav Slaboshpitsky presents his debut The Tribe without subtitle, cue card, or translation, set within a community of students and teachers at a school for the deaf and mute. Related completely though Ukrainian sign language, it’s a situation reversed considering that its subjects may likely experience similar instances of strain in deciphering communication efforts amongst the hearing. But what Slaboshpitsky does is create a unique method of engagement with the cinematic form, each sequence requiring an inquisitive deciphering, and set within an increasingly violent and illicit world of adolescent cliques operating the sort of crime rings going in the outside world.

Look, I don’t want any drama—I don’t want any drama—but I’m also not totally on board with The Hotwives of Orlando, a new Bravo-spoofing comedy that debuted on Hulu at midnight Tuesday. (Hulu Plus subscribers can watch all seven 22-minute episodes right now; Hulu Plus-less plebes can only see the first two today, while the rest will be released on a week-to-week basis.)
The basic gist: A large ensemble of ladies you already love (or should love), including Casey Wilson, Kristen Schaal, and The Office’s Angela Kinsey, don an assortment of skintight dresses and...

Lex Luthor is not just one of the most memorable characters in the history of popular culture, but he backs that up with an excellent track record. He is an incredibly brilliant supervillain and is often legitimately written so—which is more than we can say for many supposedly-intelligent characters—and has tremendously interesting motivations for what he does. Despite this however, the live action Superman movies have only touched on his demonstrated range. Gene Hackman’s version is very fun, and Kevin Spacey’s role touches on the furious energy boiling within Luthor, but neither part has definitively represented the mind-over-muscle promise of the character.
It stands to reason that Mr. Luthor will appear in some capacity in Man of Steel 2. And whether or not you liked Man of Steel, I think we can all agree that the filmmakers behind the movie understand Superman and his world—while adapting it,...

Spoiler Alert Spoiler Alert Spoiler Alert Spoiler Alert Get the picture? If you haven't seen "Star Trek Into Darkness" yet, read no further - we mean it. And now, Damon Lindelof discusses a few of the Spoiler-y plot developments from the J.J. Abrams sequel in a recent email exchange with MTV's Josh Horowitz. Highlights below. On the decision to write Benedict Cumberbatch's villain John Harrison as Khan: "It was never really a 'Should we or shouldn't we?' as much as it was 'We really have to do this but if we don't get it right people are going to kill us'...I think that character...

I think it was John Landis who once told us that every movie is better if there’s a guy in an ape suit. Let’s find out!
On Monday, September 26, join David DeCoteau for the trailer to Monster on the Campus.
A late entry in the 1950s Universal International monster gallery, this is mostly composed of leftover ideas and props from the glory days. Still, there’s a level of studio professionalism that its indie competitors could never match. Perennially affordable sci-fi leading man Arthur Franz, infected with the blood of a prehistoric fish, turns into a Neanderthal who chases pretty coeds and comes to (natch) a bad end out on the backlot.
On Wednesday, September 28, join Katt Shea for the trailer to Altered States.
William Hurt, in his screen debut, experiments with that nostalgic 80s pastime, sensory deprivation, which culminates in biological devolution. Writer Paddy Chayefsky, credited onscreen...

Kiss Me Deadly (Criterion) Robert Aldrich’s 1955 reinvention of the film noir detective story is one of cinema’s great genre mash-ups: part hardboiled noir; part cold war paranoid thriller; and part science- fiction. Ralph Meeker plays Mickey Spillane’s fascist detective Mike Hammer as a narcissistic simian thug, a sadist who would rather smash a suspect’s fingers than make love to the bevvy of beautiful dames that cross his path. In fact, the only time you see a smile cross Meeker’s sneering mug is when he’s doling out pain, with a vengeance. When a terrified young woman (Cloris Leachman, film debut) literally crossed Hammer’s path one night, and later turns up dead, he vows to get to the bottom of her brutal demise. One of the most influential films ever made, and perhaps the most-cited film by the architects...

The rumors are true. For the first time ever, American Idol contestants will have access to social media (albeit limited access). The Top 13 have American Idol-sanctioned Twitter, Facebook, and Myspace pages to, presumably, interact with fans. I think we can all agree that becoming a working actor is a very difficult goal. So if you want to get anywhere, you have to embrace every option out there. One of those options is signing up for workshops. I'm talking about those companies where, for a fee, you perform scenes for agents and casting directors. Many actors, based on principle, will not attend workshops because they feel it's wrong to pay for an audition. I guess it's nice to have principles, but the way I see it, workshops are like any tool. When used correctly, they can be very effective.First, let's take a close look at the workshops where actors pay to meet agents. Some of you believe that guys like me agree to be guests at these things because it's easy money. In the spirit of full disclosure, I receive 100 taxable dollars to show up and watch those scenes,...

I've been a Hollywood agent for more than 10 years. During that time, I've worked with the big boys and a few boutique agencies. That mix of experience has allowed me to understand how the business works at several different levels. I've learned that signing with the right kind of agency is crucial if you want to succeed as an actor. So when you're looking for representation, you need to know exactly what size company you're approaching and what it can (and can't) do for you.The way I see it, there are four levels of agencies in this business. Starting at the top, we have the power brokers. These are the companies that run everything. I'm talking about CAA, Icm, Wme, and UTA. Those four agencies have something in common, and no, I'm not talking about initials. They represent the majority of A-list talent. James Franco is a client at Wme,...

On Wednesday, May 26, 2010, just after 2:30 p.m., the unthinkable happened: Apple became the largest company in the tech universe, and, after ExxonMobil, the second largest in the nation. For months, its market capitalization had hovered just under that of Microsoft -- the giant that buried Apple and then saved it from almost certain demise with a $150 million investment in 1997. Now Microsoft gets in line with Google, Amazon, Htc, Nokia, and Hp as companies that Apple seems bent on sidelining. The one-time underdog from Cupertino is the...

Opening with exquisite narration depicting the monotony of the protagonist, Stephen Turnball's (Edward Hogg) life, Bunny and the Bull explores a traumatised character existing in a carefully controlled Ocd’s surroundings where everything is filed into neatly labelled boxes of useless objects like “drinking straws 1995-1996”. Stephen lives in Kings Cross but could live anywhere. He has not left his house for a year: “Every day he showers for 28 minutes, stacks his urine, notes the Ph level and files his floss. Everyday he watches eight episodes of Ray Mears Extreme Survivalon video tape, eats a freeze packed vegetarian lasagne and does a 20 page bumper cross word book.

Add a snail’s pace to very very little action about a small and boring love triangle set in some upper class version of post apocalyptic paradise and you have Dust – hopefully it won’t settle on you.
This is one of those movies where you really wonder what the heck the creative team are up to -- save the usual arthouse killer cinematography and crunchy use of sound Dust tells a story in 82 minutes that should have been told in 22. Just long enough to be a half hour TV show. Which is too bad, but you have to understand very few of the ingredients in Dust make for a great story. But it is weird in its relentless footdragging to go nowhere. For example, twice I found myself absently cleaning my...

After working with Brian Cox on Get the Picture, Rupert Wyatt decided to write a film to break Cox out of his supporting role rut. You’ll be glad he did. The Escapist, Wyatt and co-writer Daniel Hardy’s jailbreak movie starring Cox, is one of the most visually dynamic masterpieces in the genre.
Cox plays Frank Perry, who appears to be the stereotypical little old man for about 3 seconds, until you notice his tan jumpsuit. A criminal serving a life sentence, Perry has not received a single letter from his family since he was locked up 14 years ago, despite his constant attempts to contact his wife. Until now. Perry’s wife sends him a letter, informing him that his daughter has become a junkie and has had several brushes with death.
Determined to see his daughter before anything else happens to her, Perry gathers some of his prison buddies to help him escape.
