Streaming’s share of total TV viewing set a new record in April, the third consecutive month it has hit a high, but shows like Grey’s Anatomy and The White Lotus show the boost that linear TV can provide.

That’s one key takeaway from Nielsen’s April edition of its monthly Gauge report of TV viewing.

Streaming overall increased 15% from April 2024 levels and half a percentage point from March, accounting for 44.3% of tune-in, up half a percentage point from March. Broadcast and cable fell 7% and 16%, respectively, over that same year-to-year span, though each managed to inch up from March to April.

The ongoing audience shift worked to the benefit of marquee shows that both stream and air on linear TV, as is the case with Grey’s Anatomy and The White Lotus.

Streaming continued its upward trajectory in April, but linear TV platforms also saw an increase in their share of viewing time.

Nielsen’s monthly Gauge report shows streaming taking up 44.3 percent of all TV use in the United States, up from 43.8 percent in March. The April period (which ran from March 31-April 27 in Nielsen’s books) is the third straight month in which streaming platforms set a new high in share of TV use.

Streamers did not steal viewing time from cable or broadcast outlets, however, as both improved a little on their March numbers. Cable accounted for 24.5 percent of all TV use in April (vs. 24 percent in March), and broadcast networks had 20.8 percent (up from 20.5 percent a month earlier). Other TV usage (including gaming and physical media viewing) fell from 11.7 percent in March to 10.3 percent in April.

A role behind the scenes of 9-1-1: Nashville has officially been confirmed as casting announcements continue. 9-1-1: Nashville cast member and Grey's Anatomy alum Jessica Capshawrevealed on Threads that 9-1-1: Lone Star's showrunner, Rashad Raisani, will serve as showrunner for the upcoming 9-1-1 spin-off. Netflix is certainly taking its time to decide the fate of Ransom Canyon. The hit series has consistently proven itself as a top performer on the platform and yet the streamer hasn't officially renewed it for Season 2. During an interview with TV Insider, however, showrunner April Blair (All American) gave very good news to fans and revealed that the wheels are already turning to bring new episodes to life.

Blair commented on several aspects of the explosive Season 1 finale, from Yancy's (Jack Schumacher) shocking reveal to that death that we still have to get over. Sue me, I had to get that one out there, but they pulled a bit of a bait-and-switch on us during Grey’s Anatomy Season 21 Episode 18, so by the time the finale concluded, it was a shock that lives were hanging in the balance.

And now, we don’t know who we should be worried about until the series returns.

Jules accidentally walks in and pulls off her shirt in a room after spilling something on it. She doesn’t realize she’s in the same room as Winston, and it’s awkward between them.

Things are still tense between Simone and Lucas, who are avoiding each other.

Lucas updates everyone on what’s going on with Dylan, and her mother is angry that nothing has changed about her condition. She’s not handling any of this well, and Amelia is trying to keep her composure. The mother pleads with Amelia, but she doesn’t respond.

The 21st season of Grey’s Anatomy just came to an end and the explosive finale has left the fate of so many characters in jeopardy.

There was an explosion at the end of the season 21 finale and only two characters are confirmed to return in the upcoming season, but we recently learned that several stars already have deals in place for the next season.

Showrunner Meg Marinis revealed in a post-finale interview that she can only confirm two characters will be back, but we did get some additional insight from the interview.

If there is one thing you can count on with a 9-1-1 season finale, it will end on a hopeful note.

The series has never been in the business of leaving its fans with massive cliffhangers that will have them stressing throughout the summer, and they haven’t started now with 9-1-1 Season 8 Episode 18.

It’s a classic 9-1-1 hour in what it aims to achieve, but it’s also incredibly predictable, which is not necessarily a good thing.

There is nothing inherently wrong with this hour, though one could argue they spend too much on the emergency, considering the scope of what’s currently happening on the series.
