  • Warning: Spoilers
ELIXIR is one of dozens of straight-to-video pornographic films that Italian cult director Joe D'Amato was working on in the years preceding his demise in 1999. This one seems to have been shot both on the cheap and on the quick, with a bare plot that merely serves as an excuse to string together some routine sex scenes.

The title refers to a magical elixir that a group of women are using to seduce their menfolk. What follows are a number of sex scenes which are shot with a little more inventiveness and enthusiasm than usual, although you'll have seen them all before, of course. Sadly, D'Amato's work as a director-for-hire just hasn't stood the test of time like his earlier exploitation classics EMANUELLE AND THE LAST CANNIBALS and ATOR, THE FIGHTING EAGLE.

Yet another Joe D'Amato "adult" film, this time a magic potion makes women feel "young" again, which is cause for them to go wild with various men. This D'Amato porn features some rather unerotic sex scenes and in the end there's really nothing special here. At times, while going through the director's porn movies, it really seems like he hates what he's doing and the film comes off uninspired. D'Amato has said he hated making these films and it shows here.

Director Joe D'Amato will always be remembered for his horror films like BEYOND THE DARKNESS and ANTROPOPHAGUS as well as his long running Emanuelle series with Laura Gamser. After the Italian horror market dried up, D'Amato had a comeback with the softcore ELEVEN DAYS ELEVEN NIGHTS, which eventually led to the director doing porn titles. The director had previously mixed sex and horror in such titles as PORNO HOLOCAUST and EROTIC NIGHS OF THE LIVING DEAD but those films were a long way off from his later day porn.
