As Doctor Who spin-off, Torchwood approaches its tenth anniversary, we rewind a decade to revisit its BBC Three origins...
BBC 3 was first connected with Doctor Who as a channel mentioned in The Dæmons (1971), and in 2005 became the broadcaster of Doctor Who Confidential (which ran from 2005 – 2011), providing the new series with accompanying documentaries akin to the existing DVD range. These were initially full of clips from the show's history, then became more about the making of the contemporary series. On top of this, 2006 saw the broadcast of Doctor Who spin-off Torchwood.

Doctor Who is returning next week for it's ninth season. Peter Capaldi is back once again in the title role. He's gotten good reviews for his portrayal of the character. Capaldi is the 13th actor to play the eponymous Time Lord hero. Cinelinx looks back at the previous decades of Doctor Who and rates all the lead actors of the show's long history.
The First Doctor (Played by William Hartnell) was an aging, eccentric curmudgeon. He had little patience and he didn't suffer fools gladly. He could be very intolerant and dismissive of his traveling companions (except for his beloved Granddaughter Susan) although he started to lighten up as the show went on, learning to enjoy a bemused chuckle once in a while. He started out as an anti-hero but slowly grew into the selfless hero we know today.

Directed by Delicatessen's Jean-Pierre Jeunet and written by The Americans' Stu Zicherman, new Amazon pilot Casanova is worth a watch...
One of two dramatic pilots to land on Amazon Prime recently, Casanova stars Diego Luna as the eponymous Venetian, recently escaped from imprisonment in the Doge’s palace and on the run to Paris, determined to right his ways and prove himself to be more than his debaucheries. All, however, does not go to plan. He immediately falls into the political game of the French court, finding himself caught between the ongoing machinations of Madame Pompadour (Bojana Novokovic) and his old friend, de Bernis (Ben Daniels).
When you think of Giacomo Casanova, sex is probably the first thing that comes to mind. His infamous debaucheries and reputation for seduction have formed the basis for various adaptations, including the rambunctious BBC version with David Tennant in the title role.

David Tennant is known and loved by Doctor Who fans for his portrayal of the Tenth Doctor but his career has gone from strength to strength since he left the Tardis behind.
Thanks to his award winning roles in shows such as Broadchurch, Blackpool and Casanova (and that’s not forgetting a certain long running sci-fi series), he has firmly established himself as one of the most successful and versatile actors working in Britain today (he keeps trying to conquer the Us but thus far his effort have been in vein).
His countless performances on the stage and the screen – both big and small – have earned him countless of prestigious awards as well as a legion of dedicated followers who have devoted their lives to following and supporting his career.
As such, this list wasn’t designed for them (let’s face it, what don’t they already know about him?...

A Russell T Davies TV project is always something to be excited about. From gifting us Queer as Folk to saving Doctor Who, he has given us a lot to be grateful for over the years. Hence why his various comeback series on Channel 4, E4 and online later this month are being greeted with such a sense of anticipation.
Cucumber, Banana and Tofu come 16 years after Davies shook up TV with Queer as Folk and his new shows look likely to be just as exciting, exploring the passions and pitfalls of 21st century gay life with a candid sense of humour.
But will it create as many stars as Davies's previous Channel 4 series? Here's what happened to the Queer As Folk stars after it ended in 2000.

The directors of Doctor Who's latest series brought back the scares in a big way. Well, fear is a superpower...
Warning: contains spoilers for every episode of the eighth series of Doctor Who.
We were promised back in August that the Peter Capaldi era of Doctor Who would mark a departure from the adventurous fairy tale approach of Matt Smith's run.
“Darker” and “edgier” are buzz words that have been applied to countless Hollywood sequels, but the eighth series actually lived up to that promise and by September, the tabloid press were dispensing think-pieces about whether or not it had become too scary for children (“scary” here standing in for “complicated” in Smith's era and “heretical” when David Tennant got a lift off a couple of angel robots in Voyage Of The Damned.)
All moral panics aside, this series brought back the scares in a big, bad way.

Generally we trust the BBC to be the arbiter of all things sexy, but a new admission from “Sherlock” showrunner Steven Moffat throws that reputation into serious doubt. During a recent appearance at the Hay Festival, Moffat explained that the BBC initially pooh-poohed the idea of “Doctor Who” star David Tennant in the 2005 miniseries “Casanova” because he wasn't sexy enough. According to Radio Times, Sherlock and Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat revealed at Monday’s Hay Festival that the BBC wasn’t always happy with his casting choices. Benedict Cumberbatch wasn't considered sexy enough to play Sherlock Holmes, according to Steven Moffat.
The Doctor Who and Sherlock writer admitted at Hay Festival that the BBC were sceptical about his decision to cast Cumberbatch in Sherlock and David Tennant in Casanova (via Radio Times).
He explained: "They said of casting David Tennant as Casanova, 'Damn, you should have cast someone sexier'. With Benedict Cumberbatch, we were told the same thing. 'You promised us a sexy Sherlock, not him.'"
However, both actors ended up winning legions of admirers in their respective roles.
Tennant has gone on to star in Broadchurch and its Us remake Gracepoint, while Cumberbatch has appeared in films like Star Trek Into Darkness, 12 Years a Slave and August: Osage County.
Moffat said that there are some drawbacks to Cumberbatch's international success, particularly the difficulty scheduling future episodes of Sherlock.

It may seem mad, but the BBC reportedly didn't think Benedict Cumberbatch was sexy enough to play Sherlock Holmes.
That's the word from "Sherlock" showrunner Steven Moffat, who recently revealed that he had to fight to secure his chosen lead for the series after BBC brass declared that Cumberbatch didn't have the looks to bring the legendary detective to life. Speaking at the U.K.'s Hay Festival of Literature and Arts on Monday, Moffat also said that the Beeb wasn't too keen on his selection of then-unknown (and future "Doctor Who" star) David Tennant to play the heartthrob Casanova in another series.

"Sherlock" and "Doctor Who" showrunner Steven Moffat has revealed that U.K. public broadcaster The BBC initially weren't sold on actors Benedict Cumberbatch and David Tennant as leading men.
Why? They weren't "sexy enough". Moffat tells The Radio Times:

Of course both have since gone on to great success. Cumberbatch's fame in particular has been an issue for Moffat who jokes "It can be quite annoying too if you're scheduling a damn show."

Two television shows that no one might have ever thought to compare are Doctor Who and The Thick of It. Spinoffs aside, The Thick of It is basically The Office set in the British government whereas Doctor Who is about a time-traveling alien with a habit of picking up adventurous young women. Aside from both shows being British and fantastic, they really didn’t have much in common to prompt any comparison.
Then Peter Capaldi was cast as the Twelfth Doctor, and everything changed. The two shows overlapped, and–like David Tennant with Casanova and Blackpool–there has been a rush to watch the new Doctor’s previous works and figure out which are suitable to share with the children. There's something almost puppylike about the way David Tennant bounds into this Beverly Hills restaurant with a face-splitting grin. He's dressed chic-casual, slacks and sport coat over a vintage Brit-rock T-shirt, his face stubbly for "Broadchurch," the British police drama he's due to start filming the week after this meeting. That show will air later this year on BBC America, but he's here right now to talk about "Spies of Warsaw," a two-part miniseries airing on consecutive Wednesdays, April 3 and 10, on the same channel.
Filmed on location in the Polish capital, this adaptation of Alan Furst's well-received historical novel, set during the days leading up to World War II, casts Tennant as Col. Jean-Francois Mercier, a French aristocrat who finds himself drawn into a complex world of intrigue and betrayal as well as an affair with a Parisian lawyer (Janet Montgomery) for the League of Nations.

"Nearly halfway through the shoot, and luckily the only deaths and disasters are all happening on screen," says Murphy. "Today we shoot a key scene which will have people talking for years to come. Feeling like a mole man having spent so much time filming in the crypt, but we're getting gold on a daily basis. Very much looking forward to seeing this on the big screen but will sorely miss working with such an amazing cast and crew; expecting big things from Nicola Posener, Tom Leeper, Charley McDougall, Sabrina Bussandri and Lucy Drive."

Very much looking forward to seeing this on the big screen but will sorely miss working with such an amazing cast and crew; expecting big things from Nicola Posener, Tom Leeper, Charley McDougall, Sabrina Bussandri and Lucy Drive."

After sixty years of performing, 79-year old Peter O'Toole confirmed in a statement (via The Hollywood Reporter) that he's retiring from acting.
O'Toole says "It is time for me to chuck in the sponge. To retire from films and stage. The heart for it has gone out of me: it won’t come back. My professional acting life, stage and screen, has brought me public support, emotional fulfillment and material comfort. It has brought me together with fine people, good companions with whom I’ve shared the inevitable lot of all actors: flops and hits. However, it’s my belief that one should decide for oneself when it is time to end one’s stay. So I bid the profession a dry-eyed and profoundly grateful farewell."
O'Toole was nominated for a total of eight Academy Awards and though never winning a competitive Oscar, he was bestowed with an honorary statuette...

Fans will be able to pick up the latest collection of Murray Gold’s stunning soundtrack this Tuesday when Doctor Who Series 6 hits shelves.
As in the show’s score, the music is performed by the BBC National Orchestra of Wales and conducted by Ben Foster. The album will contain two CDs and 66 tracks, including the melancholy “River’s Waltz,” eerie selections from the episodes “Night Terrors” and “The God Complex,” as well as many others.
The musical score of Doctor Who plays a pivotal role in the show, adding emphasis to emotional turning points, heightening tension during important reveals, and providing an overall continuity for recurring characters and motifs. Since 2005, the show has had new doctors, new companions, writers and directors, but one constant tying New Who together is the score. Murray Gold has held the reigns for six years, constructing beautiful original themes, as well as incorporating and...

Russell T. Davies, the man responsible for the highly successful resurrection of Doctor Who and its spin-offs Torchwood and The Sarah Jane Adventures, last left his Hollywood career to return to Manchester, England to take care of his ailing partner.
This summer, Andrew Smith was diagnosed with brain cancer. As matters progressed, Smith and Davies decided they wanted to be closer to their friends and family. As of this writing, Smith’s prognosis has remained private.
Davies, whose many credits also include creating and writing Queer As Folk, Casanova (starring David Tenant) and The Second Coming (starring Chris Eccleston), is expected to resume his entertainment industry career at some point in the future.

Back in 2009, David Tennant, Catherine Tate and John Barrowman got together to record a special video to thank Russell T. Davies and Julie Gardner for their great work in reviving the Doctor Who franchise.
This Cole Porter influenced number was actually shown at the wrap party at the end of Tennant's tenure as the Doctor. (Davies and Gardner were also both moving on to other projects.) It only recently surfaced, and h/t reader Paul D for pointing it out to us.
Anyway, it's very cute, and somehow they managed to work in a reference to Barrowman's prodigious penchant for exposing himself.

Julie and Russell sat one night
Russell sparked up a Marlborough Light
Julie's eyes were all ablaze
As Russell tried to shun her gaze

He's been Casanova, Romeo and the Doctor. Just don't call David Tennant a pin-up
There's a moment in the current production of Much Ado About Nothing that I particularly love. It's not when David Tennant's Benedick makes his entrance as a sun-bronzed prat in a golf buggy, nor his Cary Grant-style rat-a-tat-tat delivery of lines such as, "I would my horse had the speed of your tongue", not even when he finally gets to kiss Catherine Tate's Beatrice. It's the encore when Tennant skips across the stage, grinning from ear to ear, and you just know there's nothing on earth he'd rather be doing. I've never seen an actor so happy in his job.
Today, Tennant, 40, looks like a teenager posing as an adult. Here he is in his skinny jeans and Beatles T-shirt, bubbling with enthusiasm, and absurdly boyish. He's obsessed with hacking, can't stop reading about it.

2005: Crazy days – well to Doctor Who fans anyway. Considering that in the past decade, we'd had one measly bonafide story, the prospect of a brand new series with excellent ratings and feedback was about as likely as Gordon Ramsay becoming a monk.
Nevertheless, the unthinkable happened, as 2005 not only boasted a swanky new set of episodes, but also Two brand new Doctors and also a Christmas special. Now that put the cat among the pigeons. Normally, the much vaunted BBC Christmas special centrepiece had been awarded to Only Fools And Horses. By 2005 though, the revival of Doctor Who had proved to be such a big success that the BBC bosses were using the good Doctor to bring in the numbers instead of Del and Rodney.
So what better way to launch the new Doctor than by plonking him in a prime time spot on Christmas Day? Actually, viewers had...

An Aardman Production For Sony Pictures Animation Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Imelda Staunton, Jeremy Piven, Salma Hayek, Brian Blessed, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen Also On Board
Culver City, Calif. – Hugh Grant will voice the lead role alongside an all-star cast in The Pirates! Band Of Misfits, the new stop-motion, 3D, animated film produced by Aardman Animations for Sony Pictures Animation. The film, which will be distributed by Columbia Pictures, will be released March 30, 2012 in North America.
Hugh Grant, starring in his first animated role, is the luxuriantly bearded Pirate Captain – a boundlessly enthusiastic, if somewhat less-than-successful, terror of the High Seas. With a rag-tag crew at his side (Martin Freeman, Brendan Gleeson, Russell Tovey, and Ashley Jensen), and seemingly blind to the impossible odds stacked against him, the Captain has one dream: to beat his bitter rivals Black Bellamy (Jeremy Piven) and Cutlass Liz (Salma Hayek) to...

The inevitable and the inescapable have arrived. Tonight's Doctor Who Christmas special, Doctor Who: The End of Time (which airs at 9 pm Et/Pt), signals the end of the Tenth Doctor's run on the sci-fi series... and that of series lead David Tennant, who will leave the series following next week's concluding installment. I've remained (and intend to remain) spoiler-free leading up to tonight's broadcast of Doctor Who: The End of Time, which aired last night in the United Kingdom. I'm steeling myself to be utterly heartbroken after tonight's installment, which features the return of John Simm's malevolent Master and several familiar faces, including Bernard Cribbins' Wilf and Catherine Tate's Donna Noble. But I can't help but think back to when I first heard that Christopher Eccleston was departing Doctor Who and would be replaced by the relatively-unheard-of David Tennant, whom I recalled slightly from...

David Tennant has revealed that he recently had his first ever movie audition in Hollywood. The Doctor Who star told BBC Wales that he was "nervous" because he had not had to audition for a part since Casanova in 2004. Tennant said: "I had my first ever Hollywood audition yesterday. The terrible thing is I've been very spoilt in Britain for the last few years - I haven't done an audition. "I went to this room and I found the place and I had to get past the security guard who wanted to see some ID, and I said, 'I've not brought any ID!' I didn't realise that was something (more)...

Moving to London Weekend Television in 2000, she worked as a Development Producer. While there, she began to work with Davies on the drama, Casanova. @Photo provided by BBC Worldwide In 2003, Gardner went back...

Russell T. Davies suggested to Britain’s Sunday Express that the current Doctor, David Tennant, may remain in the role for quite some time.
“David has brought everything to Doctor Who. I remember exactly where I was when I saw him audition for Casanova, I thought, ‘Here is someone saying the lines exactly as they are written.’ But mainly it was the sense of humor. A lot of straight men don’t handle humor well, but he can do the tragedy, too,” he told the paper.
"David may never leave; he could go on forever... I haven't talked to him about leaving. Maybe it will never happen. Maybe he'll be 70 and have to be taken off set."
The outgoing producer of the popular series then discussed the 2008 Christmas special and revealed, “It’s called The Next Doctor’, and there is a major plot twist at the end. We’re even...
