Based on the 1980s TV action/drama, this update focuses on vice detectives Crockett and Tubbs as their respective personal and professional lives become dangerously intertwined.
The waterfront mansion at the end was in Delray Beach, Florida. It was over 60,000 square feet, and had been built for the heirs of a large soft drink fortune. Before they could take possession of the house, they were robbed, and left Florida swearing never to return. Instead of demolishing it the normal way, it was chosen to be used in the film. It was completely demolished after filming wrapped, and three beachfront houses were built on the site.
Det. James 'Sonny' Crockett:
My guy, show him the money.
Det. James 'Sonny' Crockett: I don't want him!
José Yero: Why? What difference does it make, Sonny?
Det. James 'Sonny' Crockett: Listen to me, asshole! I do not want that motherfucker near me! You wanna see your dope? You send Isabella. Or it travels.
During the film's primary shootout, the police bring in snipers, who are located in elevated positions above where the gun battle occurs. Despite having an excellent and unencumbered view and no chance of hitting Crockett or Tubbs, the snipers fire only twice, then stop shooting even when the gun battle looks to be turning against the police.
Although there were no opening credits in the theatrical release, the Unrated Director's Cut contains credits over a new sequence that opens the film. Once the credits are done, the film begins in the nightclub scene that opened the theatrical version.
The unrated director's cut adds 7 minutes of unseen footage:
