Paul Thomas and writer David Stanley teamed up for "Emotions", an 8-part Vivid romance that demonstrates the power of a solid script and quality acting to turn pornography into eroticism. It's sad that this approach is gone, with improvised stupid set-ups to individual (streaming-ready) sex scenes replacing them on websites nowadays.
Mercedez is the nominal star as Vivid contract girl and viewer favorite, given two sex scenes plus a cameo role. Several other players, including Dirty Harry and Dru Berrymore also appear in multiple segments helping to knit the "Love American Style" format into a whole.
Karina (aka Monica Star) and the wonderful Nathalie Woods get the show rolling with an excellent three-way opener titled "The Decision", about Karina & Dick Smothers Jr.'s secret love for each other, even though she's about to marry his brother (I immediately conjured up a Tom Smothers, Jr. in my mind, but no such luck).
The hot sex is terrific, but Smothers' maudlin, over-acted and self-pitying performance, plus too much dirty talk in the voice-over narration, hurts the scene. Buxom blonde Finnish actress Karina is impressive, but unfortunately Vivid gives her terrible billing under an invented moniker "Zarino" which even fooled IMDb until I sent in a fix-it edit just now.
Mercedez plays an anything but plain waitress in "Jealous Janet", where Evan's advances toward her anger his g.f. Julie Robbins, who cuckolds him out behind the diner with security guard Dirty Harry, cuing another threesome.
Mercedez gets to have sex in "The Secretary", an effective BDSM lite take on the famous James Spader/Maggie Gyllenhaal film. She wants to advance from waitress to a secretary position and learns from boss Ben English that submission is part of the job description, illustrated by group sex with him, former secretary Teoni and "bitch" Dru Berrymore, previously seen in the opening segment starring Karina.
"Serendipity" has Mercedez returning for a bus ride to sex with Trevor Zen, in a nicely directed story of coincidence, where her boyfriend Eric Masterson is making love to stranger Natasha Dolling while waiting at the bus station for their friends to arrive. Of course, Zen is who Wild is waiting for, and the segment has a wonderful grace note ending as the unsuspecting reunited couples go off separately, a shoe shine boy in foreground of the shot taking it all in.
"Be Careful What You Wish For" is an ironic tale of daughter bringing home Dominca Leoni to stay, with latter jail-bait styled beauty easily seducing daddy Tyce Bune. Ending of him handing the signed divorce papers over to philandering wife Wendy Divine (a bit young for the role) is elegantly staged.
"The Long Goodbye" is more innocent than the title suggests, merely Nick Manning humping his foreign girlfriend Sharon Wild, as he takes her to the airport to return home, her visa expired. There's a wistful aspect to this segment, ruined by Manning's out of control shouting of his "Droppin' Loads!" tag line when he delivers a facial.
Finale has two segments rolled into one, a bit clumsy in the construction. Jazz alto sax player Jack Lawrence helps Angelica Sin when she's confronted with a gun in an altercation in the night club and is rewarded with sex by the bosomy star. Following this she returns to the club (not clear whether what we've seen was just a dream, or whatever) to have a gang bang with the owner and two other fellows, resulting in d.p.'s, several of which are distributed over the film's length.
Reportedly shot in 16mm (per producer Shylar Cobi's boasting, including a claimed 14-day shooting schedule in the BTS segment), "Emotions" is a solid example of how to make a proper omnibus/vignette Adult movie.
