Rihanna goes blue as Smurfette in the new trailer for the upcoming Smurfs movie, in which she not only debuts her new character, but also sings “Don’t Stop the Music” and “Heaven Is a Place on Earth.”
After an introduction from Rihanna, the clip begins with a mash-up of the original Smurfs theme and “Don’t Stop the Music” as the “coolest Smurf in the whole village” dances alongside her buddies. Their idyllic existence gets shattered, however, when Papa Smurf (John Goodman) is kidnapped and Smurfette must lead them into the real world.
A sleepy cover of Belinda Carlisle’s “Heaven Is a Place on Earth” — which gets rudely interrupted by DJ Khaled yelling over it — soundtracks their journey, which results in a somewhat amusing introduction to Papa Smurf’s irascible brother (Nick Offerman) and the Paris Neighborhood Watch Smurfs. Check out the full trailer below.

Antonio Banderas had that kind of charm that made even Madonna shoot her shot — publicly. The pop icon was absolutely smitten, and she wasn’t exactly subtle about it. The only problem? Melanie Griffith wasn’t having any of it. Banderas’ wife at the time made sure to keep stuff in check and let’s just say things got so awkward that she ended up being banned from Madonna’s set.

When you’ve got the Madonna openly crushing on your man, you know he’s got some serious magnetism. Too bad for her — Banderas was already off the market, and Griffith made sure it stayed that way.

Jules Feiffer, the Pulitzer Prize-winning cartoonist who also wrote occasionally for the stage and screen, including Mike Nichols’ film “Carnal Knowledge” and Robert Altman’s “Popeye,” died on Jan. 17 at his home in upstate New York. He was 95. Feiffer’s wife confirmed to the Washington Post that he died of congestive heart failure.
Feiffer was a cartoonist with the Village Voice for more than 40 years until 1997.
His first connection with the film business came with the Oscar-winning 1961 animated short “Munro,” based on Feiffer’s story — a parable about the mindless military mentality in which the title character, a 4-year-old, is drafted.
Feiffer adapted his own play “Little Murders,” a dark satire about life in New York that had been briefly staged on Broadway in 1967, for the 1971 film of that name directed by Alan Arkin and starring Elliott Gould. Roger Ebert gave the movie four out of four stars and said,...

There are many theories about what Shrek 5 will be about, and one suggests a great way to solve a major mystery about the ogres while continuing a key franchise trend. The world of animation has seen the rise of studios that have become strong competition for Disney and Pixar, and at the top is DreamWorks. The project that boosted the studio and established it as a competitor to Pixar is Shrek, released in 2000. Loosely based on the 1990 children’s picture book of the same name by William Steig, Shrek gave an unexpected but refreshing twist to fairy tales.
The first adventure of Shrek (voiced by Mike Myers), Donkey (Eddie Murphy), and Fiona (Cameron Diaz) was a huge critical and commercial success, making way for a media franchise. Shrek was followed by three sequels, with the fourth movie released in 2010. After expanding with the Puss in Boots spinoff movies, the...

In a twinned move, Minions 3 from Illumination is now set to hit theaters on July 1, 2026, moving up from its previously planned release date of June 30, 2027. For those wondering if Shrek is available on Netflix or any other streaming services, they'll be glad to know the animated fairy tale is easy to watch, rent, and buy. Since Shrek premiered in 2001, the Shrek franchise has continued to dominate the box office and award ceremonies, with even the lesser Shrek and Puss In Boots movies still standing above a lot of other animated children's movies. There's even a case to be made that Shrek 2 and Puss In Boots: The Last Wish are better movies than the original, a testament to the strength of the story.
That's not to say that the first Shrek has somehow not aged well. The DreamWorks hit movie still has an 88% on Rotten Tomatoes, and it earned $489 million at the box office (via BoxOfficeMojo). Shrek basically set the tone for the modern animated movie. After Shrek, even animated movies aimed strictly at kids seemed smarter and more knowing,...

Many movies have offered some creative interpretation of death itself, personifying the most ominous force of nature that all beings eventually meet into a fascinating character all their own. The classic image of death as the grim reaper, wearing a robe, wielding a scythe, and sporting a skeletal visage has been a cultural staple for a long time. As an art form, cinema has picked up on this, with some of the most classic movies of all time sporting their own unique interpretations of death as a concept.
Some films interpret death with a variation of the iconic cloaked imagery, putting their own spin on the classical description. Usually seen as male, death's personality can be grim, alluring, or surprisingly chill depending on the energy of the genre he's in, with horror movies, comedies, and dramas all taking the idea of what such an ancient being might act like in different places.

Shrek was one of the more odd films to come out of the early 2000s, but the film was one of the most successful animated features of its time. It stayed a novel take on the fantasy film genre that broke the mold Dinsey had set up for fairytales.

With Shrek 5 officially in development, the Lord Farquaad actor is mulling over a potential return. The franchise first began in 2001 and evolved into a multimedia giant. There have been TV shows, video games, comics, and even a musical, alongside four movies and a spin-off franchise. After the success of 2022's Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, DreamWorks Animation officially announced that the upcoming Shrek 5 is officially in the works. It is expected to be released on July 1, 2026.

While some may use machine learning — a type of AI — in the early stages of motion capture or to iterate ideas, the knowledge of experienced VFX artists and the performance capabilities of animators are central to creating the unique imagery sought by the filmmakers behind these movies. Some films, like “Lord of the Rings: War of the Rohirrim,” are more focused on traditional low-tech tools to create their look.
“Transformers One,” an origin story helmed by Josh Cooley, was designed with heavy research on both previous Transformers storytelling and the types of metals that could be used to create the impact the filmmakers wanted. Cooley’s...

In its nearly 30 years of existence, DreamWorks Animation has had a remarkable trajectory marked primarily by the bulk of franchises it created, as much as through the quality of the films themselves. Consider that one of its chief competitors, Pixar Animation Studios, started making feature-length computer-animated films in 1995 and has made just 28 features in the intervening 30 years. DreamWorks? Well, it's made 49 features in just over 25 years. Some of these films are best left forgotten or have only been rediscovered over time courtesy of oddball memes (see: "Bee Movie"). But DreamWorks Animation, amidst the Trolls and boss babies, the chatty penguins of Madagascar, and silent horses who embody the spirit of the Cimarron, has made 10 genuinely solid movies. And with the arrival in late September of DreamWorks' "The Wild Robot," there's no better time than right now to rank those 10 films and see if the studio's latest title makes the grade.

Fiona's human form gets reimagined in an impressive new live-action Shrek concept art video. Released in 2001, Shrek, which was directed by Andrew Adamson and Vicky Jenson, became a major animated hit, birthing a franchise that now features four films in the main saga and two Puss in Boots spinoff movies. Cameron Diaz's Fiona plays an integral role in the first film and in its three sequels alongside Mike Myers' Shrek, appearing mostly as an ogre but occasionally transforming into her human form.
Artist Ulya Stuzhuk now shares a new video on Instagram, taking the ogre version of Fiona and transforming her into a human. It's worth noting that the artist doesn't transpose Fiona's human form into her own drawing and instead maintains more of the character's ogre characteristics during the transformation. The end result features a number of similarities to Fiona's human form as depicted in Shrek, but...

With some snags, the timeline of the Shrek franchise is largely structured in a clear and legible way. The animated franchise kicked off in 2001 with the animated movie of the same name, adapted from the 1990 picture book of the same name by William Steig. The movie, which starred a celebrity voice cast that included Mike Myers, Cameron Diaz, and Eddie Murphy was an enormous hit, grossing $492.2 million against a budget of just $60 million and eventually going on to win the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature in addition to a nomination for Best Adapted Screenplay.
Given its smash hit status, the Shrek franchise quickly ballooned into a multimedia behemoth, bringing in a variety of different fairy tale and children's book characters over the years including Prince Charming, Rumpelstiltskin, Rapunzel, Captain Hook, and many more to skewer in its typical subversive comic fashion. AI-generated images reimagine Shrek as a dark fantasy adventure akin to a Dark Souls video game. Despite its creative potential, a dark version of Shrek is unlikely due to commercial considerations. Shrek excels as a family-friendly PG adventure, and future films are likely to continue this.

Shrek 5 has a 2026 release date with some original cast members returning, prompting cautious optimism. The Cruel Prince adaptation has been stagnant, despite the potential for YA fantasy success. Guillermo del Toro's At the Mountains of Madness remains in limbo, despite fan anticipation for the fantasy-horror film.
Some movies have been stuck in development hell for what seems like ages that I know a lot of people would still like to see get made. With so many unwanted upcoming sequels and remakes, I and many other people are wondering why Hollywood doesn't spend its time on more promising sequels or original ideas, as well as book-to-movie adaptations that are practically guaranteed to be a success. Certain projects already have a particular director or lead actor attached to them, making people even more eager to see that movie come to fruition.

Shrek 5 can benefit from Puss In Boots' success, providing a blueprint for a fresh, appealing look and compelling narrative direction. The long gap between Shrek 4 & 5 isn't necessarily a problem, as Puss In Boots proves there's still love and admiration for the original films. Shrek 5 has the opportunity to come back better than ever, utilizing the successful aspects of the original films and the lessons learned from Puss In Boots.
In a film industry of often unnecessary reboots, sequels, and spinoffs, making Shrek 5 after sixteen years would be far more alarming if a certain recent movie didn't instill hope for the franchise. When ranking the Shrek movies, the original two are generally the standout films, with the subsequent sequels falling off. 2010's Shrek Forever After missed the mark, with a 57% score on Rotten Tomatoes and an even worse 54% from audiences. Shrek 5 is aiming for a 2026 release, and it could mark an exciting return to form for the franchise. The sequel needs a modern feel to set it apart while recapturing the charm of the original movies. To stand out, Shrek 5 should blend the original animation style with that of Puss in Boots: The Last Wish.
Shrek 5 is currently aiming for a 2026 release, and the series' return after 16 years is an exciting development for longtime fans. On the heels of the lackluster Shrek Forever After, the upcoming sequel has the opportunity to remind viewers why the Shrek movies were such hits in the first place. Puss in Boots and its 2022 sequel capture the charm of the early installments, but I'm hoping Shrek 5 will mark a full return to form.

Puss in Boots is a vital character in the Shrek franchise, making his absence in Shrek 5 a potential game-changer. The Last Wish sets up a possible crossover with Shrek, leaving room for a Puss in Boots 3. New villains and companions introduced in The Last Wish could connect Puss in Boots 3 and Shrek 5.
Puss In Boots is not expected to return in Shrek 5, a casting decision thats acceptable only if DreamWorks plans on making Puss In Boots 3. Known for his distinct accent and unforgettable one-liners, Puss has gained enough notoriety for two sequels, Puss in Boots and Puss in Boots: Last Wish. He has also appeared in Shrek 2, Shrek the Third, and Shrek Forever After, highlighting his importance to the franchise. As a multidimensional character with the capacity for both excellent swordsmanship and emotional vulnerability, Puss adds a unique flavor to the whole Shrek series.

Shrek 5's release date misses nostalgia opportunity by debuting 10 weeks after original's 25th anniversary. Shrek 5's announced release date is missing a perfect opportunity. The long-awaited sequel has been the source of speculation in the years since the 2010 release of Shrek Forever After. DreamWorks Animation has more green in its future.
The studio announced on Tuesday that the beloved franchise “Shrek” is coming back to theaters with a fifth installment. The studio made its declaration via social media, deploying Smash Mouth’s “All Star” and its earworm herald of “someBODY once told me.” An ogre-ifi-ed numeral 5 then did a little dance.

Shrek 5 may bring back popular characters such as Puss in Boots and other new additions from the spinoff movies. The animation style of The Last Wish is desired for Shrek 5, along with the inclusion of characters such as Kitty Softpaws and Perrito. Characters like Pinocchio, Artie, Goldilocks, and Brogan could add depth and humor to Shrek 5's storyline, building upon their established personas.
The long-in-development Shrek 5 means the return of the franchise's best characters, a few of which I am especially looking forward to seeing again. It is a given that Shrek (Mike Meyers), Fiona (Cameron Diaz), and Donkey (Eddie Murphy) will be returning. More than likely, Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) will be brought back into the story, following his successful spinoff movies. Puss in Boots and Puss in Boots: The Last Wish expanded the Shrek universe to include several more characters who could also appear in Shrek 5.
