- Puss in Boots (Antonio Banderas) is a Spanish-speaking anthropomorphic cat, named for his signature pair of boots and is a fugitive on the run from the law, looking to restore his lost honor. Through the years Puss has been known by many names including Diablo Gato, The Furry Lover, Chupacabra, Friskie Two-Times, and the Ginger Hit Man.
Puss escapes captivity and enters a bar. After disarming the patrons and holding one hostage, he gets the patrons to divulge all the scores available in town. Puss has ethics and refuses to steal from Churches or from Orphans. He learns that the outlaw couple Jack (Billy Bob Thornton) and Jill (Amy Sedaris) have the magic beans he's been looking for most of his life. These are beans that can lead him to a giant's castle holding valuable golden goose eggs.
When Puss tries to steal them from the outlaws' room, female cat Kitty Softpaws interrupts the heist, and both fail. Kitty manages to escape before Puss could learn her identity (her face was covered with a mask). Puss chases Kitty all over town and she leads him to an underground hideout for cats. Kitty and Puss engage in a dance battle and then a sword fight. Puss hits Kitty in the head with a guitar, when she kicks a pail of milk and causes it to splatter to the ground. Kitty removes her mask, and Puss realizes that it is a woman. Turns out Kitty was leading Puss into a trap.
Kitty (Salma Hayek) is allied with Humpty Alexander Dumpty (Zach Galifianakis), a talking egg and Puss' long-estranged childhood friend from the orphanage where he was raised. Humpty tries to convince Puss to join them in finding the beans and retrieving the golden eggs. Humpty says that he has been planning the heist his entire life, and Puss doesn't even know where to plant the beans.
Puss walks away from Humpty and Kitty goes after him to change his mind. Puss tells Kitty of his feelings of betrayal for a youthful misadventure when Humpty tricked Puss into helping commit a crime.
Puss & Humpty were brothers in an orphanage. Humpty had stood up for Puss against bullies, when Puss first came to the orphanage, and Puss vowed that he would always have Humpty's back. Humpty had Puss join him in his crusade to search for the magic beans & the golden eggs. As they grew both took to petty crimes in the village. But one day, Puss saved an old woman from harm & became the hero. Puss was rewarded with boots & his fancy hat & gave up his life of petty theft. This left Humpty alone & one day he tricks Puss into robbing the town bank so that he is again hated by people & joins Humpty in his quest for the beans. While getting away, their carriage has an accident & Humpty is captured by guards when Puss refuses to help him on account of his betrayal. Puss escapes & Humpty spends 7 years in jail.
The trio steal the beans from Jack and Jill and plant them in the desert. Puss and Kitty's relationship turns romantic and, despite Puss's initial grudge against Humpty, he slowly warms up to him. The trio ride the beanstalk into the clouds to find the castle of the late giant, while avoiding the Great Terror who guards the Golden Goose. They soon realize the golden eggs are too heavy and decide to steal the Golden Goose (which is just a gosling) after witnessing it lay miniature golden eggs. They manage to escape the castle and cut down the beanstalk. While celebrating their victory, the group is ambushed by Jack and Jill, who knock Puss unconscious.
When he wakes, Puss assumes Humpty and Kitty were kidnapped and tracks Jack and Jill's wagon back to his hometown of San Ricardo. There he learns the entire heist was a plot by Humpty to lure him home to be captured, as revenge for abandoning him to the authorities when Humpty's youthful heist went bad. Jack, Jill, and Kitty were involved in the con. After pleas from his adoptive mother Imelda (Constance Marie), Puss turns himself in to the guards while Humpty donates many golden eggs to the town and becomes a hero.
While in prison, Puss meets the original Jack from "Jack and the Beanstalk" (Mike Mitchell) who reveals that Humpty stole the beans from him when they shared a cell years ago. Jack warns Puss that the Great Terror is the Golden Goose's mother, a gigantic bird who will stop at nothing to rescue her baby. Puss realizes that luring the Great Terror to destroy San Ricardo was Humpty's intention all along, as he held a grudge against the town for imprisoning him.
Kitty frees Puss from prison and apologizes, revealing her feelings for him. Puss locates Humpty in time and convinces him to redeem himself by helping to save San Ricardo from destruction. Using the gosling as bait, Puss and Humpty are able to lure the Great Terror away from town; with Kitty's help, they also thwart Jack and Jill's attempts to steal the gosling during the chase. As the group reaches the outskirts of town, Humpty and the gosling are knocked off a collapsing bridge but manage to hang onto a rope that Puss grabs. When it becomes evident that Puss cannot save them both, Humpty sacrifices himself by letting go. After a fatal impact, Puss discovers that Humpty has a large golden egg underneath his shell. The Great Terror is reunited with her gosling, and she takes Humpty's golden egg and remains back in the giant's castle.
Despite being hailed a hero by the townspeople for saving San Ricardo, Puss is still a fugitive in the eyes of the militia. He reunites with Imelda, who expresses her pride and love for Puss before he flees with Kitty, who playfully steals his boots. In the epilogue, Jack and Jill are recovering from their injuries, a restored Humpty is seen wearing a golden egg costume and dancing on the Great Terror's back with her gosling, and Puss and Kitty share a kiss.
