A clerical error sends 12-year-old Adam Lyon to a middle school for zoo animals, but his best friend, Jake the Monkey, is standing by him every step of the way to help him adjust.
Despite the popularity and success, My Gym Partner's a Monkey actually received criticism regarding jokes about Jake's butt. Most of the criticism comes from internet bloggers, who cited the show as immature and childish, making it the most controversial show on Cartoon Network in the 2000s.
The criticism was even acknowledged in the series with three episodes; "Animal School Musical" showed that during the song "I Love My Butt", an angry internet blogger is seen repetitively typing "Monkey Butts Are Gross", in response to Jake's constant butt jokes. This is a reference to the real-life criticism My Gym Partner's a Monkey has received for it's butt jokes. In "A Very Special Boy", Jake mentions that many internet bloggers are sickened by his jokes regarding his butt. And in "Lonely Lyon", Lupe tells Jake that his constant jokes about his butt drives internet bloggers crazy.
In the theme song, during the error in typing Adam's last name, a bunch of keys are typed. However, only eight letters, Adam's name, come up.
At the end of the closing credits, the Cartoon Network logo opens to reveal Jake and Adam swinging around in some treetops. Jake drops Adam, but continues to swing.
