An unemployed slacker inspires his softball teammates to improve their game so they won't get kicked out of the local league.
There are references to the New York Mets and The New York Yankees in the film. Artie, Maz and Johnny are all Yankee fans. Artie has a framed news paper article on late Yankees catcher Thurman Munson, who tragically passed away in a plane crash in 1979. Johnny before his final at bat and now sober says "It's like pitching to a healthy Lou Gerhig" and Maz gets into an argument with his fiancee, Gina about missing their daughter's ballet recital in favor of playing the first game of the softball season and tells him "That I was going to put a figurine of Derek Jeter on top of their wedding cake but now I'm thinking of putting one of those Puerto Rican's from the fucking New York Mets instead". Also comedian Jim Breuer, who makes a cameo as the obnoxious Carnival game runner is a real life die hard Mets fan, while Artie is a die hard Yankees fan in real life.
It's unfair, it's like pitching to a healthy Lou Gehrig.
During the first game scene, Dirt's uniform changes from a t-shirt to a pro style button down, then back to a shirt.
Deleted scenes and outtakes are shown during the credits.
