A man believes he has put his mysterious past behind him and has dedicated himself to beginning a new, quiet life. But when he meets a young girl under the control of ultra-violent Russian gangsters, he can't stand idly by - he has to help her.
The script originally has no back story about Robert, so Denzel Washington contributed much to the character's background and back story, including Robert having obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). In addition to his daily physical and fight training before filming, Washington met and interviewed several real-life OCD sufferers as to gain insights of how to play that disorder correctly.
Teddy Rensen. Real name, Nicolai Itchenko. Skill set honed in Spetsnaz. He's formidable and smart. Ran a wing of the Secret Police for years. Went private when the Union fell. Basically he's a sociopath with a business card.
(at around 1h 20 mins) A bad guy is chain smoking in an apartment. An overflowing ashtray is surrounded by empty cigarette packs. All the butts are Camels; all the packs are Marlboro. He pulls a Camel from a Marlboro pack and lights it.
