- Outside New York City, Paulie is about to marry Sue, who is five and a half months pregnant. Sue says the baby is a girl. Jimbo, Paulie's older brother, is best man.
Paulie goes to Dez's bar to meet with his friends. Among the topics they talk about is whether the rock band will get back together.
Jimbo goes to the airport to pick up his best friend T.C. who has not been around for eight years. However, he sees T.C. walking across a bridge after T.C. decided not to wait. When they arrive at Dez's, Paulie's cousin Mike is very angry because T.C. stole a Tom Seaver rookie card from him before leaving. The men fight and appear to make up before fighting again, and then they appear to make up.
T.C. is staying with Jimbo and his wife Jules. Jimbo and Jules are having problems so rather than go out fishing with Paulie and Jimbo, T.C. stays behind and talks to Jules. Jules says that among their many problems are the fact that Jimbo got fired again for the second time in less than a year. Jimbo and Paulie argue over who has the harder job. Paulie sits at a computer and types, while Jimbo says as a manager he has many responsibilities.
The guys get drunk at Dez's bar and then go back to their respective homes.
Dez has to persuade his two sons to help him bring in groceries. He throws their favorite junk food in the trash, and that does it.
The band gets together to play two songs but Paulie doesn't join them. T.C. sings, Dez plays guitar, Jimbo plays bass and Mike is on drums.
Mike's father tries to talk him into moving out. Mike is 33 but says his father needs him because otherwise he will be alone, and his father says he doesn't need Mike. Mike drives to Jen's house to pick up stuff he left there when they broke up. It is too late because she already threw his stuff out. And she doesn't want to get back together, even if Mike wants to.
Paulie tells the story of how he and Sue met on the Staten Island Ferry. He says they started dating after her boyfriend cheated on her.
Dez and Paulie talk about how meaningful it is to be a father. Dez says it is the most important thing in his life. In a later scene, Dez get his boys to play a Loverboy song on their guitars, even though they think Loverboy is lame.
Paulie and Sue discuss a name for the baby, and they begin to have doubts about whether they should get married. Paulie claims he would have proposed if Sue had not been pregnant but Sue is not convinced. Paulie also admits he doesn't want Jimbo as his best man.
As they play golf, T.C. confesses to Paulie that he is gay and that is why he left. T.C. said his father rejected him.
Mike works for his father's landscaping business Sullivan & Sons. He calls Jimbo to ask why he didn't show up for work.
The guys get together to play softball. They recite The Lord's Prayer (most of it) beforehand. But Jimbo and Paulie get in a major argument during the game and Paulie tells Jimbo he is no longer best man. Later Paulie calls Jimbo to apologize.
T.C. admits to Mike he is gay and explains that is why he left. Mike is ashamed that he and the others made fun of gay people when they were younger. T.C. also tries to visit his father but the door is locked so T.C. throws chairs in the pool.
Jimbo and T.C. go to a strip club where Crystal works. Jimbo admits that he can't have children, while Jules wants them. Jimbo gets drunk and tries to go home with Crystal but after an argument, Crystal leaves and Mike takes Jimbo home with him to sleep it off. Mike's father is annoyed at all this drama in the middle of the night but is kind to the guys the next day.
Jimbo goes home to Jules who was informed of Jimbo's whereabouts. Jimbo tearfully confesses that he can't have children but Jules just hugs him.
Paulie and Sue get in a big fight and it appears the marriage might be off. Paulie has not been affectionate or shown his love with flowers or other gestures, or by working hard enough to finish the baby's room. Later, Paulie makes an effort, including finishing up decorating the baby's room.
Mike tries once again with Jen, but Jen's 19-year-old brother Topcat threatens him. Later Mike plays a prank on Topcat.
T.C. finally gets to see his father, who hugs him.
Paulie repeats his proposal to Sue as they travel on the Staten Island Ferry.
Along with the credits there are home movie style clips from the wedding, alternating with the band playing.
