The Apple TV+ series starring Cate Blanchett and from writer-director Alfonso Cuarón in the filmmaker’s first foray into television has been telling a multi-narrative story. There are four sets of storytellers in the seven-part series. There’s Kevin Kline’s first-person narrator, Blanchett’s second-person narrator, there are the people around Blanchett’s character (played by Sacha Baron Cohen and Kodi Smit-McPhee), and then there’s the contents of the book in the series, The Perfect Stranger. Hot on the heels of the title track from her forthcoming album, Eusexua, FKA twigs has dropped another song and video, this one for the poppier “Perfect Stranger.” The clip—directed by Jordan Hemingway, who was also at the helm of the stunning “Eusexua”—features cameos from Phoebe Waller-Bridge and Yves Tumor.
The video sees twigs slipping into various characters across a series of vignettes, intercut with the kind of bold choreography and forward-minded fashions we’ve come to expect from the English artist. The scenes range from depictions of conventional domesticity (twigs is alternately seen cutting vegetables and bouncing a baby on her hip) and less traditional situationships (her body forms the base of a coffee table while a man watches TV).
In one scene, twigs portrays the sub to Waller-Bridge’s dominatrix. The singer is handcuffed, walking on a treadmill, while the actress, wearing silver-tipped horns around her neck,...

Few actresses have had as eclectic a career as Academy Award-winner Halle Berry, but while she has dabbled in genre-adjacent films like Perfect Stranger, Dark Tide and The Call, she hasn’t starred in a straightforward horror film since Gothika, a film released more than 20 years ago. That changes this year, with the release of Alexandre Aja‘s Never Let Go, in theaters on Friday.
In the film, Berry plays June, “known simply as Momma to her fraternal twin sons, Samuel (Anthony B. Jenkins) and Nolan (Percy Daggs IV). After an entity she calls ‘the Evil’ took over the world, Momma has kept her family safe for the past ten years by confining them to the cabin where she herself grew up. They forage and hunt in the surrounding woods, making sure to ‘never let go’ of the ropes tied to the foundation of their increasingly-dilapidated home, which they believe...

The film follows Willis as a washed-up private investigator who teams up with a disgraced football star to uncover a potential conspiracy. “Joker” was a very New York movie — so much so that tourists flocked to the Bronx staircase where Joaquin Phoenix danced in a montage.
But the sequel, “Joker: Folie á Deux,” will shoot in Los Angeles, thanks to 12.6 million in tax credits to Warner Bros. from the state of California.
The California Film Commission announced its latest round of credit allocations on Monday morning, awarding 93.7 million to 18 projects. The recipients include an untitled indie film from Sofia Coppola and Amazon’s MGM, which will get 19.6 million to make the latest iteration of “The Thomas Crown Affair.”
Netflix — which has dominated recent rounds — once again took the lion’s share of the funding, with 37.1 million — or 40 of the total.
The streamer got 16.6 million for “Rebel Moon: Part 2,” just a year after getting 18.5 million in California tax credits to make the first “Rebel Moon,” a space epic from Zack Snyder. The two...

Chinese distributor Time in Portrait has snagged China rights to three Cannes Competition titles even before they were chosen to gun for the Palme d’Or: Ken Loach’s “Sorry We Missed You,” Arnaud Desplechin’s “Oh Mercy!” and Elia Suleiman’s “It Must Be Heaven.” The company boarded the films last year when the projects were still at the script stage. France’s Wild Bunch handled the sales.
It’s the second year in a row that Beijing-based Time in Portrait has nabbed China rights to a number of films ahead of their selection to compete in Cannes. Last year, it bought Lee Chang-dong’s “Burning,” Matteo Garrone’s “Dogman,” Eva Husson’s “Girls of the Sun” and Abu Bakr Shawky’s “Yomeddine.”
“We buy some films every year from Cannes, a festival that we attach a lot of importance to,” Time in Portrait general manager Sally Yihua Li told Variety.

The first of the 10 episodes starts streaming on Hulu on Feb. 28.
Before then, Hulu viewers will get a chance to see another acclaimed docudrama, the film “Detroit” by Oscar-winning director Kathryn Bigelow (“The Hurt Locker”). She reteamed with screenwriter Mark Boal, who also picked up an Oscar for “The Hurt Locker,” for this acclaimed film. “Detroit” documents the riots that beset the motor city in the summer of 1967 after the police raid an unlicensed bar on July 23 and arrest the 82 patrons and staff. I love mash-ups and puns, which is probably why I don't have a lot of friends (among a litany of other reasons). But I can't deny that a good mash-up or pun will definitely tickle my funny bone, and the recent Jimmy Kimmel Live! sketch Perfect Stranger Things is both - a nice punny title, while also being a decently funny mash-up. Not going to pretend this sketch is a masterpiece or... Read More...

Much has been made about Carrie Coon this month, and rightfully so. The Ohio native (but devout Chicago Cubs fan) has taken our televisions by storm with starring roles in the final season of “The Leftovers” and the latest chapter of “Fargo.” In the HBO drama, she plays Nora Durst; a fraud investigator who lost her entire family when 2 percent of the world’s population disappeared. Over on FX, she’s police officer Gloria Burgle who’s busy investigating the death of her step-father.
The two roles are very different, linked only by the actress who plays them (as well as great, dynamic writing). But there is one more common thread tying together Coon’s characters to one another: Machines don’t work for either of them.

[Editor’s note: The following review contains spoilers for the “The Leftovers” Season 3, Episode 2, “Don’t Be Ridiculous.”]
Immediate Reaction:
Another episode of “The Leftovers,” another mind-blowing last-second twist. After an episode spent entirely with Nora Durst (Carrie Coon), we took a trip to the Outback in the final minutes and watched a police officer named Kevin get drugged, tied up, and drowned by a group of women on horseback who are somehow connected to Kevin Sr. (Scott Glenn).
Now, it appears as clear as anything in “The Leftovers” can be that this was a case of mistaken identity: The women, led by the tremendously talented Lindsay Duncan, thought Australian Kevin was American Kevin (Justin Theroux). They believed he would rise from the dead, as Kevin has, but why they wanted him to briefly die and how they found out about him in the first place remain mysteries. Does Kevin Sr. know them? Did he have a copy of Matt’s book? Is this even the present day,...

MaryAnn’s quick take… The ultimate anti-disaster movie. A supremely gripping and powerfully emotional film about, paradoxically, what happens when everything works as it should. I’m “biast” (pro): I remember that day vividly…
I’m “biast” (con): …but I worried about how it would be dramatized
I have not read the source material
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
I was still living in New York in January 2009 when Chesley Sullenberger landed a commercial airliner full of passengers on the Hudson River.
Landed a commercial airliner on the Hudson River.
Not in. On.
And almost everyone walked away unhurt. A bit cold and wet. One flight attendant got a nasty cut on her leg. We didn’t know that at the time. All we knew was that a goddamn plane had landed on the river and everything was fine.
It almost sounds like that...

Say what you will about the middling and awkward “Fifty Shades Of Grey,” but there’s no denying it took a strong command of the box office and proved the sly charismatic charm of Dakota Johnson. Indie movie lovers know the great lengths the actress can skyrocket to thanks to this summer’s sensual “A Bigger Splash,” and it’s one of the reasons we’re tempted to check out “Fifty Shades Darker.”

The Professor and the Madman teams Mel Gibson and Sean Penn in a drama about the creation of the Oxford Dictionary.
The Professor and the Madman might sound like the title of a long-running late-1980s crime procedural that no one really watched, but the upcoming historically based drama will showcase some star power in the form of headliners Mel Gibson and Sean Penn.
The long-gestating project of Gibson’s has finally come to fruition. The film adapts the 1998 book of the same name by Simon Winchester, following two key figures in the decades-long endeavor to create what would become the Oxford English Dictionary. Gibson plays Professor James Murray, who was appointed editor of the lexicon in the late 1870s. However, his crucial collaboration with Yale-trained American army surgeon W.C. Minor (Penn) is awkward since Minor is a lunatic and a murderer; nouns that the...

Since winning her Best Actress Oscar in 2002, I'd argue that Halle Berry just hasn't quite enjoyed the kind of post-Oscar career that was all-but promised that glorious evening, when her win was proclaimed in the entertainment media as a pivotal moment in Hollywood history in terms of work available for black actors and actresses, and Berry specifically, who some said had broken down a once-closed door that would lead to much more and even bigger roles for her in studio filmmaking. That never quite happened. Not that she hasn't been working; she certainly has, but in mostly forgettable fare: "Gothika," "Catwoman," "Perfect Stranger," "Dark Tide,"...

Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson will return as Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele in Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed, the second and third chapters based on the worldwide bestselling “Fifty Shades” phenomenon. The films are set to be released on Valentine’s Day 2017 and 2018.
Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti, alongside E L James, the creator of the series, also return to produce. Foley has helmed episodes of Netflix’s hit “House of Cards,” which Brunetti also produces.

Adapted from the first installment of E.L. James' remarkably popular trilogy of erotic novels, Fifty Shades of Grey grossed more than $570 million at the global box office when it debuted last February. The story of the sordid romance that develops between college grad Anastasia Steele (Dakota Johnson) and kinky entrepreneur Christian Grey (Jamie Dornan), the film brought Bdsm to the big screen in a way unlike anything multiplex audiences had seen before. Today, the studio announced that James Foley (Glengarry Glen Ross) will be directing both of its sequels.

The two "Fifty Shades of Grey" sequels will be shot back-to-back in 2016 with James Foley ("Perfect Stranger," "Glengarry Glen Ross") directing both reports The Wrap.
Foley was previously said to be the front runner to helm the second film "Fifty Shades Darker", but now the site reports that they've confirmed that not only does he have the gig but he'll do "Fifty Shades Freed" as well.
Despite bad reviews, the first film made more than $570 million worldwide. Sam Taylor-Johnson helmed the first but both she and screenwriter Kelly Marcel opted not to return. Niall Leonard will now pen the script.
Both Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson are expected to return as Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele for the adaption of the next two books in author E L James' series.
The two films are targeting Valentine’s Day 2017 and 2018 releases.

The 50 Shades of Grey sequel is closing in on a director to oversee Christian and Anastasia's further big screen exploits.
House of Cards and Glengarry Glen Ross filmmaker James Foley is reportedly the frontrunner to replace Sam Taylor-Johnson on the erotic blockbuster sequel, 50 Shades Darker.
According to Deadline, Foley may also get signed up to direct the closing film in the trilogy 50 Shades Freed, and shoot both movies back-to-back.
Foley, who's also directed Halle Berry's Perfect Stranger, has emerged as the top choice for the job ahead of Mark Pellington (Arlington Road), Tanya Wexler (Hysteria) and Rebecca Thomas (Electrick Children).
50 Shades Darker will be written by Niall Leonard, the husband of series creator El James.
James is said to have clashed heatedly with Taylor-Johnson during the making of 50 Shades of Grey, leading to the director walking away from the follow-up.

James Foley looks set to direct the new Fifty Shades film, taking over from Sam Taylor-Johnson.
Well, help yourself to a few quid from the prize pot if you saw this one coming. Assuming there’s a few quid in there. Universal is keen to get up and running on Fifty Shades Of Grey follow-up Fifty Shades Of Darker early next year, but there’s the small matter of a new director to find.
Sam Taylor-Johnson, who helmed Fifty Shades Of Grey, opted out of the sequel, and all the pointers are in the direction of a not very happy working relationship with the book’s author, E L James. That notwithstanding, the studio has a working shortlist of three directors, and at the top – and apparently the frontrunner by distance – is James Foley.

It sounds like the Fifty Shades of Grey sequel has a director. A source tells me James Foley will likely direct Fifty Shades Darker. Another source says he is the frontrunner, but no deal has been signed yet. Deadline was the first to report that Foley would likely be getting the coveted gig. Foley most recently directed 12 episodes of House of Cards. His film credits include At Close Range, Glengarry Glenn Ross, Who's That Girl and Perfect Stranger, among others. He directed several music videos for Madonna, who starred in Who's That Girl. Fifty Shades Darker is E.L. With the success of Fifty Shades Of Grey, Universal is naturally ploughing ahead with the sequel (and, potentially, a third film shot back to back). Since Sam Taylor Johnson famously clashed with novelist E.L. James, the hunt has been on for a new director ready for Fifty Shades Darker and according to Deadline, James Foley is the top choice for the job.Foley, who has directed the likes of Fear, Glen Garry Glen Ross, After Dark, My Sweet, Perfect Stranger and Confidence, was apparently among a small group of filmmakers in contention, and has broken from the pack to become Universal’s preferred candidate. But negotiations still have to lock in a deal, and there’s some consideration whether the studio wants to make just Darker or add Fifty Shades Freed to the schedule, and keep Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan in place. Which could also help them stay engaged with their characters.

The world was stunned when Captain Chelsey “Sully” Sullenberger landed a damaged Airbus A320 on the Hudson River in New York City on January 15th 2009. The pilot became an instant icon, and the incident immediately passed into legend. Now, Academy Award winner Clint Eastwood is set to bring the story to the big screen for Warner Bros, and fellow Academy Award winner Tom Hanks is apparently in talks to take the lead role. The only surprising thing about this is the fact that it’s taken so long to get to it.
Captain Sullenberger learned to fly at the age of 16, later becoming a fighter pilot in the Us Air Force. He quickly progressed to the rank of Captain, and also served on an accident investigation board. Joining Us Airways – previously Pacific Southwest Airlines – in 1980, Sullenberger later went on to found a safety, management and reliability consulting firm, named Safety...

When it was announced earlier this month that Clint Eastwood was going to make a movie about Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger and the "Miracle on the Hudson," our ears perked up - as happens when a high profile director signs on to a high profile film. Now the project has gotten infinitely more impressive, however, as Tom Hanks is now in talks to play the lead role in the movie. Deadline has the scoop on the story, saying that negotiations are still on-going to have Hanks sign on to the movie - which doesn't appear to have a title at this time. The movie is being based on the book "Highest Duty: My Search For What Really Matters," that was written by Sullenberger and Jeffrey Zaslow, and Todd Komarnicki (Perfect Stranger) has been tapped by Warner Bros. to write the script. For those that don't remember, Captain Sullenberger is famous...

Following the success of American Sniper, Clint Eastwood has found his next project, which will once again be a biopic. Eastwood has signed on to direct a movie focusing on airline pilot Captain Chelsey “Sully” Sullenberger. Captain Sullenberger rose to prominence in 2009, when he managed to land a plane on the Hudson River following an engine accident, with no casualties as a result of his actions. The screenplay for the film will come from Perfect Stranger scribe Todd Komarnicki, who will adapt the book Highest Duty: My Search For What Really Matters, which was co-authored by Sullenberger himself.
In their announcement of the film, Warner Bros. had this to add.
it will go beyond Sullenberger’s almost impossible and much-heralded achievement of safely landing a jumbo jet on the water, which was captured on video and viewed around the world. But behind the scenes, a drama was unfolding that could...

Forever is showing signs of life after death in this week's entertaining episode. Here's Billy's review...
This review contains spoilers.
1.4 The Art Of Murder
Whenever a reviewer takes on a new show there’s always uneasiness about the first few episodes. Because some shows can start well and then go rapidly downhill, while others can start badly and then go really, really wrong. If you’re wondering about those that start brilliantly, and then become a shiny star in the heavens of televisual history, then those usually aren’t covered by me.
That said, this week’s Forever pretty much justified me picking this one to cover, as it marked a very distinctive change of pace and purpose in what was becoming something horribly predictable. It begins in typical Murder She Wrote fashion, with an elderly socialite being stalked through the darkened corridors of a grand art gallery. Kathleen Chalfant (Kinsey,...

Yippee-ki-yay! It's action-movie time! From Die Hard to Deliverance, here's what the Guardian and Observer's critics think are the 10 best ever made. Let us know what you think in the comments below
• Top 10 romantic movies
Peter Bradshaw on action movies
In some ways, it should be the quintessential cinema genre. After all, what does the director shout at the beginning of a take? Action – at times a euphemism for violence and machismo – evolved into a recognisable genre in the 80s. Gunplay and athleticism resurfaced in a sweatier and more explicitly violent form, with movies such as Sylvester Stallone's First Blood. The hardware was all-important, and the metallic sheen of the guns was something to be savoured alongside the musculature of the heroes. The genre spawned the action hero. These were not pretty-boys there to melt female hearts: they were there to get a roar of approval from the guys.

Did you watch last night's pilot episode of "The Blacklist"c Did you like itc Personally I found it to be a sloppy, cheaply made mess and was astonished to learn Joe Carnahan (Narc, The Grey) not only produced it, but directed it on what I can only assume was a shoestring budget based on how plastic and low-rent each set piece and location felt. To begin, what was with the plastic box James Spader's Raymond 'Red' Reddington was being kept in and what was with the 30-second opening of the boxc Watch the clip above and just as the extra walks across the screen around the 20-second mark as the box begins sliding just a bit quicker as if someone on the production was yelling, "Move faster! This is taking forever!" Reddington had just surrendered (to an army of men pointing guns and rifles for some reason) and...

Out of a total of 438 submissions, Acf selected 16 non-Korean Asian projects and 11 Korean projects.
“When we’re looking at which projects to fund from around Asia, we try to choose the ones that would not be likely to get support from anywhere else except us. As for the Korean projects, we look at overall quality. And for all projects, we look for how prepared they are, and whether they have a new approach,” said Acf director Hong Hyosook.
She added that documentary submissions this year were particularly strong.
“We had about 90 Asian documentary submissions alone, about 30 more than last year. Overall, they were good in quality, well-prepared and planned out. We had a limited number of slots, so it was...
