Ron Dean previously appeared in The Fugitive (1993), which was also filmed in his native Chicago. It also won an Oscar for Tommy Lee Jones for Best Actor in a Supporting Role. His character, like Heath Ledger's, was inspired by a Victor Hugo character. Gerard was modeled after Inspector Javert from Les Miserables, while the Joker was inspired by Gwynplaine from The Man Who Laughs. Jones also played Two-Face in Batman Forever (1995).

Batman's sonar lenses are not on in several instances in the Pruitt building scene when they should have been. The camera cuts back and forth too fast for the lenses to be turned off or on.
The Warner Bros logo, Legendary Pictures logo and DC Comics logos are shaded dark blue.
The Blu-ray version of the movie has several of the big action scenes and high altitude photography scenes in ordinary 16:9 (1.78:1) widescreen ratio while the rest of the movie preserves the "scope" format (2.39:1). This is because these scenes were filmed in IMAX, whose format is 1.44:1, thus attempting to recreate the effect witnessed in IMAX theatres, as well as preserving as much of these shots as possible.
