After a tragic accident two stage magicians engage in a battle to create the ultimate illusion whilst sacrificing everything they have to outwit the other.
When Andy Serkis' character is first introduced, he makes a reference to a magic trick where you guess the item in a person's pocket. This is the exact same trick that fooled Serkis' character Gollum in The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey (2012).

Borden's plan all along is to have Oliva give his encoded diary to Angier and to get rid of him by sending him to Colorado by providing the keyword. However, this never would have happened unless Angier did something Borden couldn't predict, like kidnap Fallon.
