China’s Yulin Festival, infamous for brutally killing thousands of dogs and cats each year in order to sell their meat, is set to ban the sale of dog meat just weeks ahead of the 2017 event.
According to Humane Society International, animal campaigners have received reports from fellow activists in China that the Yulin government is set to prohibit festival vendors and traders from selling dog meat. These reports have also been confirmed by three traders from one of Yulin’s biggest dog meat markets.

Directed by: Ji-hoon Kim
Written by: Je-gyun Yun
Starring: Ji-won Ha, Sung-kee Ahn, Ji-ho Oh, Ae-ryeon Cha
In the 1981 TV movie The Intruder Within, Medical Center's Chad Everett plays the commander of an oil rig who inadvertently discovers some prehistoric eggs. One of the eggs hatches, releasing a snake-like malevolent creature that begins to hunt down the crew one by one. Directed by Peter Carter (Rituals), The Intruder Within has the dubious distinction of being one of the first full-on Alien rip-offs on television or film. (Roger Corman’s first attempt, the surreal Galaxy of Terror, would be released theatrically later that year.) It’s a typical early-eighties television yarn with flat visuals, story points timed for commercial breaks and very little onscreen violence. Joseph Bottoms (The Black Hole) is the “Ash” of the piece, attempting to study the life form at any price. There's also a “chest burster” counterpart which is shown,...

Encino - One of the joys of life is not in the getting, but the ability to give. For the longest time I thought that sentiment was bullshit. It sounded more like the excuse of plague carrier. How can giving a trophy be better than receiving it? I found myself overblissed while handing hardware to a certain star.
In case you tuned in late to the Icon Celebration special on the Dumont network, that was me on the podium announcing that 2011’s Spirit of Bob Crane Award winner was Charlie Sheen. Tears of joy were shed on the trophy that’s a bronzed Sony Portable camera from ‘77. Who knew Charlie was capable of emotion - especially anyone who bought the DVD of Navy Seals.
Charlie continues the legacy of the late great of Bob Crane. Both starred in completely absurd sitcoms. Crane played Col. Hogan on Hogan’s Heroes. We...

Hitting movie theaters this weekend:
Limitless – Bradley Cooper, Anna Friel, Abbie Cornish, Robert De Niro
The Lincoln Lawyer – Matthew McConaughey, Marisa Tomei, Ryan Phillippe
Paul – Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Seth Rogen
Movie of the Week
Limitless
The Stars: Bradley Cooper, Anna Friel, Abbie Cornish, Robert De Niro
The Plot: A copywriter (Cooper) discovers a top-secret drug which gives him super-human abilities.
The Buzz: Until recently, I couldn’t stand Bradley Cooper — and no, it wasn’t his role in A-Team that won me over, it was, hearkening back a decade, his role in the television series ‘Alias.’ Yes, I’m a total johnny-come-lately when it comes to that show, but I love it, and I love Bradley Cooper in it. He can act, I was surprised to see. His success with ‘Alias’ ultimately launched his career, and now, ten years later, here he is approaching A-list status, starring in a fine-looking action film,...

Au revoir les enfants (Criterion Collection) Without a doubt, this is an absolute must buy. I don't care if you buy it on DVD or Blu-ray, it is a film any film lover should own. I first saw it in June of 2009 and I can't tell you how many times I wanted to buy it after seeing it and I continually held off because I didn't want to buy the DVD only to have the Blu-ray come out shortly after. Well, the Blu-ray is now here, and there are no more excuses. I have watched it and it is brilliant. Fantastic transfer and some excellent special features. I will have a full review shortly, but for now I can't recommend this film more... Of all of this week's releases it is the #1 pick no matter how you slice it.

The Fighter
Some critics get it all wrong. Some have called this Rocky-meets-The Blind Side, which is a horrible claim. The Blind Side sucks. Yes, the parallels to Rocky are there, but this film is way more earnest and daring. Loved every minute of it. (Formats: Blu-ray/DVD) Jon says: Buy Donny says: Buy
Hereafter
Nobody showed any love to Clint Eastwood’s genre film from last year. Well, it’s out now, so there’s no excuse, although the film did look like a CGI blockbuster of John Edward’s life (the psychic,...

What could be better than a young Nicole Kidman in classics 80′s era flickdom? Well, lots… but, we’re talking apples and oranges here. BMX Bandits is only one of the schlocky titles to go Blu this week, the other is Roger Corman’s Sharktopus, a modern schlockterpiece that was spawned from the recent giant mutant killer animal revival on DVD and the SyFy Channel. If you sit on the serious/schlock fence, perhaps you’ll appreciate the emergence of the Harry Potter franchise finally conjuring itself onto Blu. If your tastes are a bit more refined, I would suggest one of Criterion’s new Blu titles: Louis Malle’s Au Revoir Les Enfants — set during WWII, about a French boarding school run by priests and a friendship that could risk the entire school’s safety; or, Edward Yang’s Yi Yi...
