A novice sleuth is hired by the police after he cons them into thinking he has psychic powers which help solve crimes. With the assistance of his reluctant best friend, the duo take on a series of complicated cases.
In the episode "The Santa Barbarian Candidate" Gus says "I can fix that" more than once. That is a reference to Dulé Hill's role in Holes (2003), where he used that line on multiple occasions.

Gus & Shawn will occasionally mention eating Japadogs, which at the time of filming, were street vendors located only in Vancouver, Canada where the show was filmed and not in Santa Barbara, California where it is supposed to take place.
Each time a guest performer sings the theme song, they sing the entire song as opposed the shorter version in normal episodes.
As of 2018, unlike the ION channel reruns which left the episodes uncut, the Hallmark Channel censors some of the language and suggestive humor despite it being mild.
