Film directors need to have more ambition and a unique cinematic vision to attract sales agents, distributors and ultimately a theatrical audience, agreed a group of European film industry experts at a debate at Flanders Image’s CONNeXT event in the Belgian city of Ghent on Tuesday (October 8).
“I’m looking for something singular, something different,” said Karin Beyens, head of acquisitions at France’s Diaphana Distribution. “Last year we bought Mid 90s and Girl, two films that give you a certain experience. You feel something when you see these films.

The only thing more exhilarating and exhausting than HBO’s stunning summer drama “Euphoria” was its soundtrack. Wound through the sparkly noir soap opera of teens in a love-hate relationship with drugs, sex and themselves was this equally torrid and twilight-y musical tone — an undulating, wall-to-wall set of songs and score crowding around Sam Levinson’s vision of ordinary madness. That there was just enough room for airy, gospel electronica and overheated melodic house to hover atop the proceedings — with the likes of Megan Thee Stallion, Bts, Fiona Apple, J Balvin and “Euphoria” actor-singer Zendaya among its often 20-plus songs her episode — was a miracle of music direction.
Labrinth made that miracle happen and created a score as hallucinatory as the images on the screen. The Brit-born dance floor producer and composer best known for bits of Rihanna’s “Unapologetic,” The Weeknd’s “Beauty Behind the Madness,” and records by Skylar Grey,...

Billy Wilder once observed that the best way to cast a gangster movie was to tour executive offices at the studios. That may be one reason he avoided the genre. Despite Wilder’s apprehensions, the two most anticipated 2019 releases — from Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino, no less — harken back to that revered genre. As such, they may revive the question: Why did Hollywood all but abandon their mobsters?
Ironically, two newly published books that have nothing to do with the Scorsese and Tarantino movies remind us of the reasons: Gangster movies, it seems, began to hit too close to home. New nonfiction biographies of Johnny Rosselli and W.R. (Billy) Wilkerson provide vivid details of the scandalously close ties between the studio chiefs and organized crime from the 1930s through 1950s, and later. As such, they serve as intriguing context for the new entries.

Kollywood‘Chekka Chivantha Vaanam’ with its visceral violence is just following a long tradition of filmmakers choosing to show gore on screen to entertain audiences. Nandhu SundaramThe fact that one of our best directors – Mani Ratnam – has returned to his ‘Nayakan days’ with his new film Chekka Chivantha Vaanam gives us an excuse to examine the thorny issue of how violence is represented in modern Tamil cinema. I mean if we did this with regard to Saamy Square, you probably would not read the rest of the story, right? Violence, though not always graphic, is nearly omnipresent in Ccv. How did we reach this point when it became okay to show audiences such high levels of savagery? In Ccv, we are shown a paranoid world where brother turns against brother (in nearly biblical proportions) and gunshots mark every other scene. When a major character casually walks to a window, we...

Football player-turned actor John David Washington grew a film fan like any other. From “Dances With Wolves” to Tim Burton’s “Batman” to comedies like “Clueless,” he absorbed movies of all genres. But he also grew up uniquely surrounded by the business; when you’re the son of a cinema legend like Denzel Washington, that comes with the territory. It’s fitting, then, that the star of HBO’s “Ballers” and Spike Lee’s latest, “BlacKkKlansman,” was slightly conflicted on his own journey to a career in front of the camera.

Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster 3 is the 3rd instalment of a modernisation of Guru Dutt’s classic Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam. Just like the original there is an all-powerful Saheb. His devoted wife represented by the character Biwi. Then there is the Gangster. This version’s Gangster is Sanjay Dutt. The music for the film is heavily tuned towards folk and modern Punjabi music to match its setting. Throughout the avatars the producers have not been set on any one music director and have continued that trend here by using Rana Mazumder, Aanjan Bhattacharya and Siddharth Pandit to create the soundtrack.
No better place for the album to begin then with Sanjay Dutt’s theme song: Baba Theme. Revant Shergill is called upon to give a dark and slightly off pitch rendition. It sounds faintly of the James Bond theme, but its darkness is certainly evident. Synth instruments are kept quiet but seem to reek foreboding,...

Organized crime as a theme has been one of the most popular of international cinema, with movies like “Goodfellas”, “The Godfather Trilogy” and “Once Upon a Time in America considered masterpieces. As somebody who had the original two Ghostbusters movies memorized at an early age, you could say that I had waited pretty much my entire life for a threequel. Actually, we kind of got one in the form of a video game nearly a decade ago, but it didn’t solve the problem of not having something to enjoy on the silver screen.
What’s perversely funny about the situation is how much back and forth played out over the decades, only to have a new flick to get off the ground in what seemed like moments after Harold Ramis’ tragic death. Yes, the reboot we received did have its supporters, but in full disclosure, I’d rather not “answer the call.”
Personal opinions aside, I won’t take anything away from the talented individuals who help bring a story to life. As you know, any given film these days...

Its television time once again for Anurag Basu. The director of path-breaking films like Gangster and Barfi is all set to return to his roots. Anurag had started his career on television directing several episodes of Tara in 1993. He also directed a large number of episodes of Kyunkii Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Tthi before branching out into filmmaking. But now Anurag has gone back to television with a brand new adaptation of Rabindranath Tagore's Chokher Bali. Designed for television, the film has turned out so well that it's now being considered for the large screen Says the film's leading lady, Radhika Apte, "It's been made for the Epic channel. When Anurag Basu offered me the role I just wanted to do it. I didn't care which medium it was for. Anurag is a director for whom I'd do two shots in a short-film. And what a mind blowing script.

She lived a tumultuous life, filled with passion, romance and a tragic grandeur. And now Meena Kumari's life would be chronicled in cinema by none other than Tigmanshu Dhulia whose Sahib Bibi Aur Gangster was inspired by Meena Kumari's best-known work Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. For the first time Tigmanshu Dhulia talks about why he has chosen National Award winner Kangna Ranaut to play Meena Kumari.
Dhulia, who is currently wrapping up a film called Yaara, says he chose Kangna because she was the only actress who could convey the tragic pathos of Meena Kumari's personality. "There is a profound sadness in Kangna's eyes, the same quality that we saw in Meena Kumari's eyes. And that voice! When I heard Kangna Ranaut in her debut film Gangster I was reminded of Meena Kumari. The same haunted and haunting quality, a voice that suggests pain grief, wisdom and seduction!
