  • After watching the TV series of Hellsing, reading the manga and watching Hellsing Ultimate series, here are my personal pros and cons...

    ~TV series~

Pros: 1.The series went at a steady pace, if you never watched or read Hellsing before this series is easy to follow and understand.

2.Although the series steered away from the original manga story line, it still had a good plot that you could easily "get into" and follow.

3.Better listening music although I still did enjoy the music in Hellsing Ultimate. 4.Not really a pro, but I know a lot of the voice acting can affect how someone can like an anime, just so you know the voice acting is very well done and suits each individual character and their personalities. 5.Crispin Freeman has a sexy voice 6.Alucard is sexy ^_^

Cons: 1.Not the original story line in the manga(I know some people don't mind anime that doesn't follow the mangas)

2.The animation is OK. There's times where it looked good, time where it looked bad like every anime, but there is lack in detail and can have a bland look.

3.No comic relief, but some people prefer it to be that way for a dark anime.

Overall the series is well put together. Definitely an anime well worth every penny.

    ~Hellsing Ultimate~

Pros 1.Animation, besides the use of 3D effects here and there(which I personally don't care for) much more detail than the TV series, especially in facial features and clothing detail. Its no Vampire Hunter D, but if you were to compare the TV series/ultimate series to Vampire Hunter D animation, go with Hellsing Ultimate.

    2.Follows the manga story line.

3.This can be a pro or con. One long episode per disc(about 50 mins per episode) which some people like. So no annoying skipping intros/endings to get to the next episode

4.The same voice actors from the TV series came back to work on Helling Ultimate.(I hate it when animes change voice actors)

5.Alucard shows more emotion and is more deep than he is in the TV series, but still maintains his cold sadistic personality. Victoria and most main characters show more emotion.

    6.Comic relief here and there.

7.Crispin Freeman still has a sexy voice... ^_~

8.Alucard is still sexy.(even more in hellsing Ultimate in my opinion)

Cons 1.Music isn't as good. Fits the series, but not something to really sit and listen to.

2.This series moves much more faster than the TV series, making it harder to follow and understand. I'd suggest watching this after reading the manga or watching the TV series.

3.1 long episode per disc(each episode is generally 50 mins long) while this can be a good thing for some ppl, I find that most people like having multiple episodes per disc.

    Hope this helped ^_~
  • The new Hellsing OVA is a much better adaptation of Kouta Hirano's manga in comparison to the original 13 episodes. This OVA closely follows the intended storyline of the manga with better animation. If you're a fan of the manga, then chances are you'd enjoy this OVA much better than the original 13 episodes which featured shoddy art and animation techniques with a storyline that had very little to do with the manga. This OVA was an amazing visual experience in the realm of new age anime. The character development is much better on the part of Seras and Integra than they had been in the original anime. The fight sequences are nothing short of amazing. This remake is entirely better than its original and stays true to the manga that Hirano has created; it is most definitely a recommended watch.
  • Warning: Spoilers
For fans of the original 13 episode series, the new Hellsing OVA represents a great opportunity to put right what was once wrong. Devotees will recall that the original series ran out of funding, resulting in a terrible last few episodes. The new OVA series certainly rectifies that, if we can judge from the first episode: the animation is gorgeous, and the pacing/story is much more true to the manga (if that's important to you, i don't care personally). Another feather in the cap of the OVA is the return of all the great voice actors that made the original so awesome despite its flaws. So what is it missing? A little of the charm, a little of the character development that the slower paced version had, and the music. No more great opening theme song, no more clunky piano that was so appropriate to Hellsing. Still, definitely worth watching, if only for the fight between Hellsing and Anderson and to see Seras Victoria be a bit darker than her cutesy TV version
  • Hellsing the OVA Series is a brilliant piece of work.

It follows the manga much better than the original anime series, although the soundtrack to the original was brilliant, so is the OVA's.

Alucard is more deep in character than the last time and so is Anderson (even more so,) and many scenes that didn't make the anime appear in the OVA.

The graphics outdo the original series (and most other animes for that matter,) as they utilise cgi in important scenes. The same voice actors from the original show are here, along with a few new ones.

overall, i recommend this to any and all Hellsing fans.
  • A few people may remember a short, pseudo gothic,13 episode vampire anime series a few years back called 'hellsing'. It had a steady cult fan base but was in the essence of things good, but not really great. It seemed doomed to obscurity with no more material to work from into the latter half of the series, which then free-styled off onto a tangent.Fans were disappointed, an ultimately anti-climactic series with no real reverence for it source material.

last year things changed and a phoenix rose from the ashes in what can only be called anime 'history'. Most failed series are laid to rest and never mentioned again like a past you want to forget, but not with kouta hirano. His labour of love was to have his vision realised in animated form and so we get, true to its name,'Hellsing Ultimate OVA' this series unlike any other gives us a viewing experience we could only dream of, with episodes now feature length ova's with lush quality animation and production values out of the norm for short anime series. From the artwork to the dialogue, everything about the series reeks 'quality'. Its almost scary how very close it comes to being exactly like the manga it is based on. The music is 'epic' and sound is superb.

This is so unlike the old t.v series that it's beyond even funny! To those not familiar with hellsing the manga is probably, well actually IT IS the darkest graphic novel you are ever likely to read. Sure it has moments of mild humour which Japanese love, but in the grand scheme of things it is genuinely unsettling how close to being an evil villain the protagonist assumed to be 'good' really is. In short Alucard a vampire hunter, but a vampire himself works for & protects humans (you can see where characters such as Dante from devil may cry were inspired :p), the hellsing organisation a secret organisation set up to obliterate any supernatural threat to the protestant British empire. Protestants (Hellsing) Vs Roman Catholic Vatican (Iscariot Organization,Section XIII), Modern day Nazi bad guys, these are elements of the content in the series. No spoiler here, but needless to say, if you like blade, devil may cry, cool anime with action, extremely mature and 'cool' dialogue that isn't cheesy, a serious and dark storyline, a proper depiction of a modern day vampire (and believe you me, the way alucard is depicted has set the standard of what vampires should truly be about :D). this series is not Bram stoker 'dracula' re-told, or Dracula 2001 or anything you've seen related to vampires. GET READY for an anime that will literally blow you away! Overview: MATURE CONTENT, SCENES OF GRAPIC VIOLENCE AND OF A SEXUAL NATURE (Although you'll be surprised how little there really is :D). OVA (Original Video Animation) - Feature Lenght, High Budget, High Quality Anime. One 'episode' per DVD but it's Worth it since it's like watching a mini film based directly of each consecutive manga.

(Bare in mind i am not usually a big fan of vampire related anime or overly violent anime but this anime charms the audience in a way never thought possible. This anime has in essence the truest 'anti-hero' in the definition of the word. ENJOY!)
  • Warning: Spoilers
Alright. This will probably be biased as I'm a huge Hellsing fan to begin with. If you've stumbled upon this whilst looking for the crappy American movie Van Hellsing, please don't leave just yet. You see, with watching Hellsing, you're in for a treat.

Hellsing follows the adventures of a vampire named Alucard, working for the Hellsing organization. He goes around and kills other, rouge vampires in quite bloody and over the top and generally awesome ways, along the way turning a young police girl, Victoria Seras into a vampire as well.

*Cue HAWT 30 mm vampire carried cannon system* Generally, Hellsing focuses on the hyper-violence involved in killing various vampires, ghouls, and other baddies with incredibly large pistols and rifles (remember the 30 mm cannon thing I was talking about? Yeah.) to excellently composed music.

Me? I just can't wait until the Nazis get involved. That's when the awesome stuff starts going down. Since this version follows the manga's plot exactly, you know what's going to happen. Seras's kill in 7 will be mind-blowing.

Anyway, its accessible to fans of the previous series because they kept the voice actors from the previous series, along with much improved animations including CG, especially for specific parts with Alucard.

    7-4-07- Hellsing 8. Oh yeah.
  • Warning: Spoilers
In a nutshell, this OVA series, of which there are currently 2 volumes out of a possible 10 as it is based on the fantastic Manga, delivers. I would give the TV series which was 13 episodes long, came out in 2001 and strayed from the Manga half-way through, 2 out of 10. As far as quality in visuals, voice actors, animation, and satisfaction is concerned, it was droppings that needs flushing. The music was all that was good about it. Kohta Hirano has made a truly sensational improvement in the new OVA which has left me drooling for more. I have only seen the Japanese dub with English subtitles but I have to say that no other anime has ever held my attention and made me feel such euphoria as this one. The visuals are exponentially enhanced giving a sketchy, even cheesy animation with beautiful noir scenes of gore and elegance surpassing Elfen Lied. This OVA is also infinitely more fast paced than the TV series. In the first OVA, Ceras Victoria becomes a servant vampire to the awesome True Vampire Alucard who is the most powerful weapon of the Hellsing Organisation headed by Integral Wingates Fairbrookes Hellsing who's secret job is to keep the dark secrets in the underpants of society in the dark where they belong. And it happens quickly. In the TV series Ceras who was far cuter rather than deadly becomes and accepts being a vampire more swiftly and is almost instantly put into service and honing her skills, even nearly being killed early on by the dangerous and vile Catholic Warrior Priest Father Alexander Anderson. The characters are also far more beautifully designed and their animation is superior and generally quicker and more to the point if you know what I mean. There is a lot of stretching of the heads and such typical of Anime found frequently in Anime like Full Metal Alchemist though even more of it mostly with Ceras. In the TV series there as a lot of dragging with unnecessary scenes and pauses. Alucard's sadistic and powerful yet loyal personality are vastly improved and he looks more bad-ass and dangerous. The scene where Integral explains to the overconfident, disillusioned vampire slayer Father Anderson just a little bit of what Alucard is was absolutely phenomenal. Integral herself is vastly improved with her being more active and less manly. She actually looks beautiful in the OVA rather than androgynous and plain in the TV series. The combat scenes are to die for. They are extremely fluid and have a real vampire fair to them. In the 2nd volume where the two Valentine vampire brothers infiltrate Hellsing and cause aggravation which also happens in the TV series, their fighting scenes are jaw dropping. Where Luke Valentine meets his demise at the hands of Alucard's dogs of doom under Cromwell Level 1 effect, I felt a carnal thrill I had never even came close to feeling in the TV series. And when Ceras is being attacked - attacked being a euphemism as this OVA has implications of rape and mutilations a lot - and she turns to her vampire side and tears the ghouls to shreds like wet tissue paper and looks far fiercer than in the TV series. The story is true to the Manga and I will not spoil it for you. If you are new to Hellsing, do not buy the TV series if you want my advice. Buy the OVA as it is truly what Hellsing is all about and it is one of the most satisfying horror Anime out there and shows what amazing things the Japanese can do with out culture as well as their own. This is certainly in my top five anime of all time.
  • Still bathing in the afterglow of the brilliant Hellsing I, we now move on to the second part. So whats on offer? As it turns out, there was something strange about the duel at the end of part I. You see, our heroes were assailed by ghouls, and yet the source vampire was already dead, meaning the ghouls should have been as well. The Hellsing organization has noticed this, and called a meeting of its head council, but a mysterious organization has sent out two deadly assassins and their army to raid and destroy the Hellsing headquarters and everyone in it...

Part II advances on the already great Part I immensely. It is more gruesome, more action packed, and more engaging, introducing more about the world of Hellsing. We get to see a little of Alucards past, as well as more about Integra and Seras, our female protagonists. We also see more of the organization that will become the main villains in future volumes.

The problem is, despite all this, Part II isn't as entertaining as it could be. Yes, the weird humor is a little more suited in this one, but the direction lacks the crazy wildness that made the first one so great. This one isn't quite as good as it could be.

Although the new series is an improvement over the original, it still could be better. But thats not to say it isn't already great. The action is only beginning, and there's a lot to come...
  • After been waiting for a long time, finally Hellsing Ultimate 3 is here! This episode starts with the aftermath of the attack that took much of episode's 2 time and then follows Alucard, Victoria and a new guy on their trans-continental quest to find out more about the Millennium organization (with help from the less expected source, I must say...) The CGI-loaded animation is still the same, and I've seen people who have loved it and people who have hated it, so for this one, either you love it or hate it, your feelings will be the same. The soundtrack keeps going with it's epic-oriented tracks that add a very good atmosphere to the OVA.

This episode is blood/gore loaded, much more than the previous two, so if you felt uneasy about that, you probably don't want to see this one. This episode is violence-packed with a more conspiracy-like plot and a really good duel (that didn't show up in the original series) where Alucard has the opportunity to show his powers once more. There are also a couple of funny scenes to break the tension of the moment.

At the ending credits we get an animated teaser of the past of Alucard and Walter that is told in Hellsing: The Dawn.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Hellsing Ultimate tries to do a lot over the course of the series, so it would be a disservice not to credit its sheer ambition. That said, some of these things it does very well, while others very poorly.

Hellsing excels at action, and it will sometimes take unexpected directions which is an enjoyable surprise. Of the episodes currently available, I was impressed by the intensity of the action. Without doubt, the savagery of many prominent characters and the brutality of the fight scenes is just about peerless. This is the keystone of the series. Hellsing dances in the gray area between a visceral action movie and a snuff flick. That sounds a little more extreme than it really is because Hellsing doesn't take itself too seriously. Weapons, fight scenes and especially gore vacillate between extreme, improbable and comic. Also, goofy, cartoony scenes with bright color and heavily stylized animation sneaks its way into the series. These breaks for comic relief are zany, slightly juvenile and slapstick, so you will laugh or be annoyed depending on your tastes.

Unfortunately, Hellsing Ultimate, at this point in its release schedule, falls sadly short on developing interesting characters. You only get two flavors: calm, confident, vicious and sinister or cowardly and incompetent speckled with moments of surprising heroism. The protagonist, Alucard is a super-powerful vampire that feels like a demi-god. He is cruel, bloodthirsty and invincible. He comes off as either cold and arrogant or crazed for violence, and that's all you can expect through the whole series. He is so overpowering that fight scenes come off as pointless outside of providing action for its own sake. Imagine a fight between an evil superman and an arthritic 90-year-old . . . every episode, and you get the gist. Villains are, with few exceptions, idiosyncratic, utterly demonic and have only two emotions: hubris and panic. They start off as seemingly powerful, terrifying forces that quickly turn into stormtroopers, figuratively speaking, (sometimes at the first sign of a major character) so that we can watch them be killed in entertaining ways. The other characters can be interesting as they are introduced, especially Seres and section 13 members, but they become static quickly. Sometimes viewers are given flashbacks to provide character background, but that unfortunately comes off as insignificant when the show gets around to doing it.

The plot is so-so. Without revealing any spoilers, I have to admit that I rolled my eyes when the major villain was revealed. Hellsing doesn't exactly go out on a limb with its bad guys.

Overall, I would say Hellsing Ultimate is like an Ozzy concert. It specializes in shock, and it does that well. Everything else is hit and miss. I found it entertaining, so I would recommend watching it. After 2-3 episodes, though, episodes start to feel the same. For those whom are not already big anime fans, I would much more recommend something like Cowboy Bebop or Black Lagoon.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Even when I liked the first "Hellsing" anime adaptation from the year 2001, I guess I'll have to admit this version (Which is far closer to the original manga by Kohta Hirano) is vastly superior in almost every aspect.

Despite having a somewhat similar beginning to its television counterpart, after the first two episodes the plot from "Hellsing Ultimate" becomes a totally crazy roller-coaster of extreme action, horror, gore and even some black comedy...And personally I found this combination to be incredibly entertaining to watch.

While the plot isn't anything incredibly complex or "deep" as other Japanese animations that try to include some kind of "philosophical" content, the twisted fun delivered by "Hellsing Ultimate" is enough for me to include it among my personal anime recommendations.

    8.5/10
  • Not being familiar with the older 13 episode series, then I had no expectations for this series. I sat down to watch it with a clean slate, so to speak. Was told that it was a really great series by an acquaintance, so I decided to give it a go.

I will say that the art style is somewhat different from the Manga that I am used to watching, but it wasn't bad. I liked the style of art in "Hellsing Ultimate", it was dark, it had an edge and it was nicely rendered. Smooth animation and interesting characters really helped the series along.

"Hellsing Ultimate" has a lot of blood and violence in it, so it may not be suitable for all people. Just a word of warning. I, however, did enjoy it. The vampires here were brutal, devilish and beastly - read not having big hair and sparkling skin.

The characters in the series were nicely thought up and well put to the screen. However, I think that they could have made the episodes longer and given the characters a chance to show their personalities and nature more on the screen. Given them a chance to delve into character development, as some of the characters were a bit shallow and could have benefited from a more in-depth presentation.

There was a lot of jumping between the episodes, in the sense that there was an red thread in the storyline, but individually the episodes were a bit too skittering and 'flash bang'. By that I mean, it was all great, action-packed and full of blood, but once one episode was over, the next would skip entirely to something else.

One thing did puzzle me, well it is just me being petty, but why did everyone speak Japanese? It didn't make any sense that people from the Vatican or South America spoke Japanese, or that the Nazis spoke Japanese. But hey, it was a Manga animation, so it was easy enough to bear over with that.

Having seen this new series, it sort of sparked an interest to get a hold of the old series and check that out as well. The 2006 "Hellsing Ultimate" series was great entertainment and it well worth checking out, for both newcomers to the Manga scene and for avid fans alike.
  • Warning: Spoilers
I'm writing this review as a person who doesn't have unordinary affection for vampires and who didn't read the manga before watching the series.

I decided to watch the show after reading all these good reviews about it. I, however, had hard time enjoying it. There were times when I couldn't stomach all the pointless action and my attention was fleeting away. Between a plot that doesn't get you involved, lazy storytelling, generic characters, mediocre OST, bad animation and even worse CGI, I found Hellsing lacking on all fronts.

The animation bugged me from the get go and it was definitely one of the biggest drawbacks for the series. The artistic style they implemented would have been decent for this dark and Gothic anime, but it is plain to the eye they tried to put too much detail into the work. Perhaps as a result of this the quality is very stuttering, and sometimes the proportions of the faces are off and different perspectives are handled very poorly. To make things worse, CGI is used all the time, and it _sucks_. I found it hard to believe this show was made in 2006, given the quality of its 3d-animation.

The plot, which centers around a war mongering SS officer and his immortal legion of vampiric nazi soldiers, does nothing to get you interested. You pretty much know what is going to happen throughout the series, and the additional plot twist at the end feels like it was glued on top in the last minute.

As if the plot wasn't mind-numbing enough, what's even worse is that most of it is carried out by long monologues. "Show, don't tell" is a good rule of thumb that this show would have made benefit of.

There are some positives too, though. While some action scenes get dragged out too long or don't have any thrill because of the looming feel of omnipotence, there are occasionally some fights that make you excited.

The main characters are also quite likable (Alucard, Hellsing, Walter, Seras), although even their appeal becomes a victim of the series' over- the-top, megalomaniac nature. Despite this, Seras in special was one of the biggest reasons I kept on watching this show. She is actually the only character that develops during the series. There are also some funny scenes involving Seras thrown in here and here, which strongly contrast the otherwise dark and serious atmosphere of the anime. In my opinion those scenes were always a welcome change in the mood, and for me they underlined the importance of her character for the series.

In the end, though, Hellsing OVA is a poorly written anime with a mediocre to bad production. I can suggest this only to the most hard- core vampire fanatics.
  • Warning: Spoilers
If you're a fan of the Vampire Hunter D films and novels, Hellsing Ultimate is yet another of the great anime vampire epics!

Fans of the Manga have been waiting for a more proper animated treatment of their beloved Alucard and gang. Where anime had it's merits and certainly did some things right, it ultimately failed in the end, with a poorly done final villain and a cliffhanger ending that leads nowhere, the OVA is set to follow the manga from beginning to end!

The Order of Protestant Knights, known also as Hellsing; have the ultimate tool for vanquishing a growing epidemic of vampires: Another vampire, Alucard! The "Hit man" of Hellsing.

When a girl named Seras Victoria is caught in the crossfire when Alucard is cleaning up a recent threat, she reaches out to him. She reluctantly becomes a creature of the night and is soon swept into the Maelstrom as an enemy of the world looms in the distance, hoping to settle an old score; especially Alucard.

The art style is awesome, capturing the same dark and gritty look of the manga, the fights that were intense and frantic in the manga become heart stopping sequences that will leave you on the edge of your seat.

With strange and powerful foes ranging from Homicidal brothers, insane fanatical priest to vampire Nazis; Alucard and Seras have their work cut for them.

The music is awesome and capture each moment well, with pumping techno as the action builds and to haunting melodies as the horror intensifies. The Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra lends their talent to each epic ending theme of the OVA's.

This is a series for everyone, if you love vampire, blood and gore and action, Hellsing does not disappoint!
  • "The bird of the Hermes is my name, eating my wings to make me tame."

Hellsing Ultimate is a 10 part OVA anime based on the Hellsing manga that follows it very closely compared the earlier attempt which contained 13 episodes and had to stray off because of catching up the the story at the time. And unlike many, I did liked that early attempt and still do but this, however, COMPLETELY BLOWS IT AWAY!! Bigger budget, better animation, better action, better plot and way more GORE.

The story follows Hellsing organization which has only one goal, to rid the world from vampires/monsters. And they accomplish this mainly by their trump card, ALUCARD (DRACULA in reverse), an immortal and powerful vampire that does the bidding of his master, the leader of the organization, Integra Hellsing.

Since they followed the manga to the fullest, the story this time around was a lot better and actually went somewhere. Still, plot isn't the reason to watch this anime because its the action and gore and the awesomeness of Alucard that makes Hellsing a joy to watch. The anime is filled with gruesome bloody sequences with people and monsters being totally decimated in thrilling and amazing ways.

ALUCARD is probably the most badass and awesome Anti-hero I have ever seen in an anime. He taunts and humiliates his enemies before ripping them to shreds, takes extreme joy in the act and really defines the word MONSTER when doing all this. But at the same side you see that he has a softer side which he hardly ever shows and there is more to him then just being an all out monster. Also, I don't think I've ever seen the main character to be THE STRONGEST in the whole anime and the world it shows. Usually the hero/anti- hero/lead has to train hard, overcome obstacles, acquire knowledge and powers to become strong and defeat the enemy. But not here. Hellsing's like "Screw all that. Alucard is the most powerful. Enjoy.". And I loved this. Such a refreshing thing to see.

The anime isn't without its flaws however. One thing that REALLY bugged me is that when all the stuff is going down, carnage and destruction everywhere, the anime decides to take the time off and do some character development or deliver a monologue or a speech or something. But it wasn't never really good at this stuff so it turns into a drag and all you want is to see more action. The pacing wasn't that good at times. And then there were those typical anime comedy thrown in the mix, which popped up in the most atmosphere breaking moments and really annoyed me, only a few times it was actually funny and worked.

Animation quality was superb. Detailed characters and violence and stuff. The soundtrack was a mixed bag.

Overall, I really enjoyed the anime. It's a definite watch for anyone who wants vampire centric story without any lovey dovey/teenage/high school stupidity and just delivers the awesome gory action we want.

    8.3/10
  • Violence, blood, gore, vampires, Nazis, bayonets, the Vatican, Hellsing is back, and better than ever. Forget the original series, the one that shamelessly disregarded the brilliant manga. This is that way Hellsing is supposed to be! There are many contributing factors as to why this is so much better than its predecessor. For a start, the animation is amazing. Truly incredible; it has to be seen to be believed. And the music suits the epic madness of the manga perfectly.

The style and direction is fantastic as well, bringing a wild mood the original lacked.

However, it is not without flaws. A truly dreadful dream sequence and its aftermath almost spoils the piece, and you will be left wondering why the hell it was even present.

But ignore that cringe worthy five minutes, and you will have a truly satisfactory Hellsing experience, something you could never get from the original.

    Warning: Spoilers
The Hellsing Ultimate series is shaping up to be an awesome piece of work.

The first episode is almost disappointing. What you get in the first episode is almost a complete recap of the first few shows in the original series. The Ultimate series however is set at a much faster pace, has a new sound track, and the animation is more crisp. You get the same exact story as the original, and thats what seems disappointing.

At the end of episode two the you learn about the Millennium organization, something left out of the original series. It episode two adds a lot more depth and substance to the new series. The story starts to stray from the original TV series, and starts to catch interest a lot more.

Episode three is where the similarities between the new and old end. Right away we find out Hellsing hires Major Bernadotte and his army as hired guns. "Enrico Maxwell" informs Integra what Millennium is and the Vatican's ties with Millennium Organization. We see a new character "Tubalcaine Alhambra" who engages Alucard in an awesome battle, each showing there tremendous power.

In episode three you really see the character development start to take place. Its nice to see a bit more depth in the characters.

There are also comical scenes in the anime in what looks like cut-out animation, sometimes its funny, other times its annoying.

After watching the first three Ultimate episodes, I rate this a 10.

I have never read the manga, I have only watched the original "TV Series"

    Warning: Spoilers
'Hellsing Ultimate': This is not exactly a remake of the original 13 Episode 'Hellsing' anime series. This is an OVA that is retelling the 'Hellsing' story in the animation style and plot characteristics derived from the manga. Compared to the first anime series, the animation is much improved and the characters have a noticeable increase in depth. Thankfully the same voice actors are retained in this series and a few additional ones can be found. While the story in this version is not quite as seamless as in the first anime series, the plot is at least more adherent to the original layout of Kouta Hirano. I certainly look forward to seeing the completion of this anime and recommend the series to any serious fan of the horror genre or anime medium.
  • Warning: Spoilers
Synopsis: Tasked with defending England from undead and supernatural assailants, the Hellsing Organization led by Sir Integra Fairbrook Wingates Hellsing (Mizuhashi Kaori), grows strained as the frequency of vampire attacks increases. Hellsing's own greatest weapon, an ancient and powerful vampire named Alucard (Nakata Jouji) along with his new servant Seras Victoria (Orikasa Fumiko) are quickly drawn into the central conflict. The appearance of Millenium, a new faction hosting an army of vampires, threatens to engulf all of London in a cataclysmic war as they square off against Hellsing as well as the Vatican's Section XIII Iscariot.

    Characters:

For a show so fundamentally focused on its own various factions, Hellsing doesn't actually have all that large of a cast, opting instead to represent its various organizations through a handful of recognizable characters and a moderate supporting cast. While Alucard, Integra, and Seras are the focal characters of the show, the story often wanders away from them to investigate the goings-ons of other notable characters and companies such as Alexander Anderson and the Vatican. Around the midpoint of the story these various perspectives and characters start to come together as the show begins its long and drawn out climax.

Both the most iconic and notable of the cast is Alucard himself who embodies much of what Hellsing is about. He's a vampire through and through and not only presents all of the familiar traits and abilities of his folklore counterparts but a host of far more vague powers such as teleportation, minion-summoning, and near-invulnerability. He's a cruel and ruthless killer who's gruesome style of combat often ends with him just as ragged and bloody as his opponent. His most common strategy is to allow his opponent to blow him to bits while mocking his own powerlessness before reforming and quickly dispatching them. It's a very weird fight dynamic and many of his fights fall into this formula however eventually more back and forth exchanges are established.

The issue that arises with Alucard is that, between his tendency to let his own enemy inflict ostensibly lethal wounds upon him, his seemingly ever-expanding list of strange abilities, and the general gory aesthetic of the show - it becomes increasingly hard to tell when Alucard is actually in any real danger. The tension and suspense of each fight involving him quickly dissipates and drains the fight sequence of all meaning when he appears so openly infallible. What the viewer might insinuate to be severe blows against him are often discarded as Alucard merely playing with his opponents. His frequent 'apparent deaths' quickly desensitize the viewer to both his own well-being as well as that of vampires in general. With people getting their brains blown out and quite literally painting the walls red with their own blood, it's hard to tell what is at stake if anything when they keep coming back.

The other character worth touching upon is Alucard's servant Seras Victoria, a police girl he converts into a vampire at the start of the series. Initially she is played off as somebody in way over their head - thrown into an outlandish situation involving the Hellsing Organization and her own newly acquired vampire status. In the early episodes she is almost entirely relegated to an awkward comedy-relief role however Hellsing eventually re-purposes her into somebody more action-oriented. It felt as if the show couldn't make up it's mind on what she was supposed to be - dopey and comedic fan-service character or tragic and badass vampire warrior. One trait often ended up compromising the other and it was hard to take her more grave scenes seriously given her initial foolishness and role in the show.

    Art/Animation:

Were there a single word that could encompass all of Hellsing's style and appeal it would be gratuitous. Like any good vampire show, it was obsessed with blood. Hellsing is all about overkill. Too many guns, too many bullets, too many enemies, too many bodies, too much blood - it created an aesthetic and presentation out of pure excess and it certainly found unique qualities within this approach. When it came to bloodshed, it didn't shy away from showing some truly brutal material and the subject matter of war was a terrifying place for this style to manifest. This visual brutality and excess is key to understanding what Hellsing is about and how it tries to appeal to its viewer as much of its allure is closely tied to the outlandish nature of its characters and these grotesque characteristics.

The show's visuals are pretty decent - though lackluster and sometimes even awkward during the first 4 or so episodes, the animation quality steps up over the course of the show and solidifies itself fairly strongly around it's midsection and onward. Punctuated by heavy shadows, stark lighting, and more eye-glasses glare than you can handle, Hellsing establishes a distinct visual appearance early on though initially some of its characters would move strangely and exhibit exceedingly odd postures because of their lanky designs. For the most part, the character designs of the cast all fit well with one another though there were a few exceptions such as Schrödinger and Rip van Winkle who felt outlandish and out of place when juxtaposed to Hellsing's other more grim and callous designs. The occasional, oddly cliched-looking, gag scene also upset the show's aesthetic on top of being completely unfunny.

    Story:

Hellsing's story is where it suffers the most for a variety of reasons. The first few episodes follow a pretty similar pattern as the viewer is introduced to the show and its characters. A vampire sent by Millenium is wreaking havoc and Hellsing and Alucard have to intervene. Some faceless background characters are killed and transformed into ghouls and there are some highlights of Integra, Seras, and Walter the butler before Alucard ultimately ends up killing whatever the threat is. This kind of bland introduction to the show leaves the first half feeling uninspired though with the proper introduction of Millenium near the series' midpoint, things start to heat up. The initially gruesome aesthetic finds new footholds in the subject matter of war and the degree of its excessive nature doubles and triples as the action mounts.

One particular problem Hellsing had was in the pacing department. Given how it's 10 episodes were divided into roughly 50 minute-long installments, it often felt as if each episode would drag out it's own self-contained action and plot before expiring. Fights would last an exceedingly long time and the show never seemed to tire of vampires and supernatural abilities ripping through people and ghouls like endless fodder. This approach set up the atmosphere of the show quite well early on but its prolonged use to kind of fluff up the episodes grew tiresome after a while. Monologues as well were a huge problem for the show's pacing as they would often state and restate the same esoteric thing for the sake of emphasis. This gave a lot of the dialogue a certain monotonous tone to it.

Possibly the biggest shortcoming of the show is in its final few episodes. Hellsing's midsection does a decent job of revitalizing the show with improved animation, gory action scenes, and a surprisingly exciting war development. However, once the the pieces are in place and the story is once again in motion, it rather quickly devolves into incoherency. Hellsing is far more interested in the factions its characters belong to and the gore of its action scenes than the characters themselves and this leaves them feeling not only under-explored but downright confusing near the end of the show. Certain character twists and reveals make less and less sense, the viewer lacks context to understand the implications of many new powers and abilities being revealed, and the whole point of it all is kind of lost amidst the rambling presentation.

    Music:

Hellsing's soundtrack is likely much what you would come to expect of a modern vampire show. It's Gothic and haunting yet dabbles with some guitar, electronica, and jazz with varying degrees of success. Most of the tracks fit the show well enough but there wasn't a memorable tune to be found and they certainly didn't rise above merely supporting the show's visuals and plot.

    Final Thoughts and Rating:

Hellsing is crippled by a number of narrative issues and others besides yet it is not completely bereft of entertainment. It's claim to your attention lies in its graphic content or rather - how graphic its content is. It has a handful of cool scenes and the uncensored display of carnage set against a dark and bloody atmosphere definitely allowed the show to stand out among other similar action shows.

    Rating: 5

I gave Hellsing a 5 because, while it presented a surprisingly grisly look at the vampire genre and the brutality of war, it suffered from a myriad of issues across all categories. Alucard felt invincible and damaged the tension of many of the scenes in which he was involved, Seras felt tonally confused and her awkward stabs at humor somewhat upset her later developments into more of an action-oriented character. The show's visuals were at times impressive and at others a little crude and lackluster. Hellsing's story was circuitous and even confusing despite a rather simple and predictable plot.

    Recommendations:

If you like blood, guts, and occult Nazism then this show was likely crafted specifically for you. If you are a fan of guns, bullets, and way too many of them then similarly so - you'll love the kind of over-the-top, stylized action that Hellsing has to offer. Anybody turned off by gratuitous blood and violence should probably stay as far away from this show as possible as it truly makes it it's business to deliver on those elements above all else and in the greatest excess.

Some great action scenes, some great characters. It's just hard watching sometimes due to the preaching in it, about every character waffled on endlessly. Some of the preaching sounded really silly in places....over the top for sure.

Finally, I came to write a review about my best and most beloved anime – Hellsing Ultimate. There are so many things that I want to say about it, that I'm just afraid of being lost in this forest of thoughts. Well, I must start with the words that this is the remake of the original Hellsing (2001). Often when I say "remake", I put some negative meaning in it, but not this time, oooooh, definitely not this time. Because this time I wasn't just amazed and dragged into this world, I believed every single word that came out of the Reich Major's mouth, I tasted every drop of blood along with Alucard, felt sick madness growing inside me every time Anderson started his speech, sensed cold-blood nobility in every Integra's order and action. These kinds of feelings just overflow you from your feet to the tips of your ears and you start suffocating in them. That's what Hellsing Ultimate will endow you with – a gigant 100 m wave of feelings and emotions that will wash you away into the abyss of clear obsession.

Story – 10/10 The story line is fascinating. The Knights of Round Table vs The Vatican vs Millennium. I mean what can be more exciting than a fight between the Devil himself, servants of God and beasts whose only reason of living is bringing DEATH to all. The mix of mysticism, religion fanaticism, brutality, gore, violence and tooons of pure insanity – all of that plus insanely catching story about NEW WORLD ORDER is what makes Hellsing that gorgeous.

Art – 9/10 The art style is beautiful. The animation is incredible. The special effects are on the top level. Hellsing is one of those animes in which 3D animation looks flawless and does harmonize perfectly with the simple graphics. Characters and the whole world in Hellsing looks very detailed and does not cause you any discomfort perceiving them.

Music – 9/10 Though Hellsing does not have any opening themes, it does have dozen of great orchestral endings (and a couple of rock endings) that will force you to plunge even deeper into the dark horror- fantasy universe. I'm not even mentioning the breathtaking scenes of undefeated beast as Alucard is, raping everyone with the sick, vomit and exciting at once causing smile on his face, accompanied by classic music masterpieces.

Characters – 10/10 Just don't know what else to say about characters in this show. You can only feel it when you see it, because characters are that sparkling sun that makes Hellsing shine above all.

Enjoyment – 100/10 Unbelievable. Unimaginable. Unique.

Overall – 10/10 My absolute №1 of all time. Impossible to transfer the feeling after watching Hellsing Ultimate. Blood pumping in your veins, sensation of Mastering the World, GOD LEVEL. Absolutely recommended for all anime fans over 18.
  • The whole plot is not convincing enough, there's not a progression of events to build up a great storyline. Yet the action scenes are great, full of violence and good effects. Enjoyable but sad to say forgettable.

Before I watched Hellsing Ultimate, it had been recommended to me by multiple people, and with an IMDb rating of 8.5 I had great expectations for this series. Unfortunately it failed to impress me even the slightest bit. How more than 10000 people voted this up to 8.5 is beyond me. I had to force myself to watch until the end. This series is bad on so many levels. The story and plot are weak and predictable. There are no plot holes because the story doesn't even reach enough complexity for plot holes to even occur in the first place! Absurd plot twists come out of nowhere, no build up whatsoever.

The action is extremely repetitive. Every fight Alucard has is the same: Opponent shoots/kills Alucard, Alucard pretends to be dead, Alucard does that stupid laugh, Alucard resurrects and consumes opponent. The dialogue is equally dumb and repetitive. What little story there is to begin with has to be explained word for word by the characters in these long and boring info dumps.

Then there are the characters. Calling them cardboard characters would be a compliment. These characters are paper thin! Most of these characters have literally no backstory at all and serve no purpose in the story. The lucky few that do have some backstory, are composed of nothing but clichés. A police girl becomes an officer because her parents were killed by bad guys. Seriously? That's been done a million times before! Or how Alucard's secret is that he really is Dracula (you know, because Dracula spelled backwards is Alucard). Are the viewers of this series expected to be so unintelligent that they can't even figure out the simplest of anagrams?

But I hear you coming: what it lacks in substance it makes up for in "style"! Well no, not entirely. Sure you can love or hate the graphic style, that's personal taste. For me personally it is one of the few redeeming aspects of this series. The animation on the other hand is average at best. I understand the constrains that a limited production budget can put on the quality of the animation, but there are better and more creative ways of spending a limited budget instead of blowing it all on unnecessary 3D graphics. The character animation was poor: Ping pong loops, too many frame holds, characters that talk without opening their mouth, etc. Never mind any sense of choreography in the fights, it's all flashing lights and no actual fights. Last word of advice: if you're going to do a style over substance project, don't take yourself so seriously.

If you want gratuitous violence on repeat, go ahead, you'll love this, but if you are looking for anything deeper, avoid at all cost.

I think my summary says all. Especially if i add i mostly despise anime-culture. At least Naruto, Death Note and the other meaningless and tasteless popular no-good waste of moneys anyway, with their really, beyond words pathetic "OMG cosplay is my life and Kira is sooo hawt" fan girls and even worse fan boys who are just like Alucard's nickname "no life king"....... Oh and before anyone questions it, i did watch those and a lot of others like Full Metal Alchemist and so out of curiosity and pure boredom, so i don't just say that, i actually really saw them and i still think so...So chew on my words all you fanatics and sentence me to eternal torment for it.

For the reasonable people i continue and say Elfen Lied and Rozen Maiden were the only ones which entertained me, which made me feel emotions, think, etc, everything what a good piece of art shall do. And oh yeah i liked the old Hellsing. I am not really into mangas, kangas and those sort of Japanese things, I was and am a real comic-book fan, and by comic-books i mean Batman, Sin City, Hellboy, Constantine and sort. For me a good character, a clever plot, and a REAL fight for example between Joker and Batman is more exciting than the average "we look into each others eyes for 20 minutes than we shout meaningless things and insults toward each other for another 20, then we fight for a., 1 minute (like most of the fights in the original hellsing and in this one too, i must admit), b., for an eternity(dragon ball anyone?)". And i could never get over the "we sacrifice everything, EVERYTHING just to look stylish and cool" attitude either. Which Hellsing Ultimate does too...

So why i love this so much? I don't know. Honestly. And i think this is the best compliment i can give. This is even better then the old hellsing series was. This is so breath-takingly amazing, every scene, every word is believable, likable, you can almost imagine them as real people around you. Especially Seras Victoria and Pip Bernadotte. Their romance is the perfect example to show what i mean: It is so smooth, it never makes a big deal about itself, its not rousing but arousing, its so delicate and yet it explodes with such fierceness and emotions in episode 7, that i dare to call it the most touching thing I might ever will see in my life. The whole scene is so unearthly bloody and violent and still it is more kind and gentle then 99% of the chick-flicks you see. Why? Because it is real. It feels real anyway, in that moment you really believe that the mercenary-captain is glad the way he dies, protecting a sweet girl, and you feel the pain of Seras, you see the hatred and the anger rise within her, which leads to her decision to finally drink blood, which is a thing she was afraid to do, because she thought she will lose her humanity, but right now you see and understand why she does it.

All characters are obsessed, not black and not white, but all different depths of gray. Even the craziest and most evil Major has his soft moments when he jokes around with Schrödinger about him being fat, or when she praises and salutes for Rip Van Winkle, and also Integra can be an ignorant, violent fool driven by her hatred and anger (for example when she orders Alucard to massacre in episode 3) I rambled too much already so i close this review now, with the conclusion: Even if you are an avid hater of animes or a real fan, this is beyond that argument. This is beyond the question, what it is, because the answer is really simple: pure genius ART, intentionally with all big letters.

Im 27 years old and don't really watch much anime these days and decided to catch up. So I brought Hellsing.

There is nothing more you could ever want out of an anime in this genre, The art is excellent, the humor is hilarious, the sound fits perfect, the story? wow. When the catholic Vatican's special forces meet with the Nazi zombies while fighting crazy vampires your mind will blow.

There is no filler episodes in this series at all and it will glue you to the screen, the action sequences are flawless and you would struggle to think of more creative villains/heroes to add to a plot, each character seems unique and makes you always wonder what could possibly come next! let Alucard show you what a real vampire does.
