| The Darling Buds of May: Part 2
ITV knew how to keep the viewers hooked. Scantily clad young women out in the fields.

Mariette finds herself fighting for Charley's affections, as another nubile lady makes a play for him when the Larkins go strawberry picking.

Since he stopped referring himself as Cedric, he has become a babe magnet. It makes you think, where were the young local men? I am sure Mariette would never be short of admirers.

After some hesitation Charley calls in sick at the tax office and throws his lot with the Larkins.

Pop Larkins holds the local fete and it is a great success, especially as Mariette and Charley get engaged. However I still never understood why he kissed Mrs Pilchester and Ma Larkin was happy about it. Does it suggest an open relationship?

There was certainly a drop off in the story. The viewing figures held firm but this was episodic and nothing much happened. Pop even makes an offer to buy a country house from the local squire. The Del Boy was still in him. He planned to knock the house down and sell it off for scrap.

There was a scene in the tax office that does discuss a post war austerity Britain where the Larkins think it is ok for them not to pay any tax. Despite the Larkin's generosity they do seem to be blind that others around them have been struggling since the war started and even years after it ended.
