- Season 1 Episode 33 Lady Windbell's Fan Prologue: An alleged deaf man Sy, selling pencils outside a Chinese restaurant enters, requesting a certain decorated ladies fan from the shelf. Seeing the wanted price of $10,000 from the owner, the man fatally stabs the owner, stealing the fan. Johnny Chang welcomes Pete and Edie to the Green Dragon, a Chinatown club, explaining to Pete the fan Lillian Quon is dancing with has brought nothing but trouble since it surreptitiously arrived. Pete soon finds trouble as a man trying to steal the fan from Lillian fights, escapes, without the fan. Pete has Lillian hang on to the fan, but wrap an empty package for him to take. Leaving the Green Dragon, followed by a man he confronts, learning the person sending the man was Johnny's father, Li. Meeting father Li, Pete hears Li wants to avoid further bloodshed as Li tells of the murdered man. Li offers tea, Pete passes out, Li opens the package carried by Pete, admits being outwitted, instructing associate not to harm him, but return him. Edie finds Pete, front seat of his car, dazed, but waking, asking Edie to summon particular people. At the Green Dragon, he meets Johnny, Lillian and Sy, explaining that Sy was there the night Wong was murdered, because Pete has Sy's notes to prove it. Pete breaks a light bulb on the floor, prompting Sy to speak. What did Wong want $10,000 for? Bribery is the answer to the question, as Sy explains the older Chang was an escaped convict in Chicago, fifty plus years ago and Sy had the newsprint of the events made into the fan to eventually bribe senior allowing the marriage. Pete brings the couple to be blessed by senior and Sy burns the fan in the fireplace.
