Salpêtrière (French for saltpeter, and so named because the hospital was established on the grounds of a gunpowder factory), is a teaching hospital in Paris, and is affiliated with the University of Paris. One of the personalities that brought fame to the hospital was when Jean-Martin Charcot, who helped establish the hospital's neuropsychiatric teaching centre. He was involved in groundbreaking research on modern clinical neurology, hysteria, neurosyphilis, epilepsy, stroke and hypnosis. His work served as the foundation of psychoanalysis.
