Bigalow is trapped inside a simulacrum (duplicate) of his apartment, unable to leave until he determines to quit smoking. There is a small hole in the wall through which he hears (but cannot see) Mr Matthews, who seems to be in a situation similar to his. Bigalow has one cigarette, but no matches. Matthews says he has matches, but needs a cigarette, and offers to trade a match for a cigarette. Bigalow says, "It's a terrible trade. What do I need a cigarette for if I don't have a match?" Logically, as the one who would be giving up the cigarette and getting the match, he should have rejected the trade by saying, "What do I need a match for if I don't have a cigarette?"
